I had a _very_ different experience on Friday. I'm in Group C and this was my first event there, so I was by no stretch of the imagination all that fast. I was picking up speed by the end of the day on Friday and, with 10 minutes to go in the last session, I got the black flag. Seems I hit 94db on my way up to 6. I was actually a little proud. ;-) Thankfully, as I was only there for Friday, and the session was almost over, they let me back out and I had to short-shift to 4th for the last few laps. I have a similar configuration to your LTW, so some of the noise volume is definitely car-specific. One thing to note -- the booth isn't where the microphone is. The microphone is on the fence line. Not 50-75 feet from the track, more like 20ft. If your car is loud, stay as far to the left side of the track as you can without killing your line. - peterg

Without the car turned on, when I turn on the light switch, there is backlighting behind all four dials (fan speed, left temp, right temp, vent selection), as well as the buttons. So yes, you have one (or more) lights burned out. I've never removed the AC control head, so I can't say whether it's a difficult procedure or not. I checked my Bentley manual, and it describes the procedure very well, although it doesn't show where the bulbs are. Basically, to remove the AC control head: 1: Remove OBC 2: Remove sunglass holder 3: Pull off rotary knobs (fan speed and vent selector) from control head 4: Remove screws (that were hiding under these knobs) 5: Carefully pry the faceplate from the control head 6: Push the control head into dash and pull it down through the opening where the OBC was located. Note that you may be able to find and replace the bulbs after Step 5, so you may not need to move the control head around. Good luck! -rb >Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 15:09:40 -0700 >From: Carl Stern <carl.stern@xilinx.com> >Subject: HVAC controls backlit? > >With the changeover to Daylight Standard Time, I just noticed that >my heater/AC controls are not lighted. #3. Supersprint (was Re: Laguna Seca noise limits update) - from Ron Buchalski

Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 14:08:50 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Supersprint (was Re: Laguna Seca noise limits update) Marc, I just put a Supersprint exhaust on my car last weekend, so I now have the same intake and exhaust setup that you have. I noticed something a little interesting with the Supersprint exhaust... When we installed it (cold), it was aligned with the tips centered between the edges of the bumper opening (not the rearmost edges of the opening, but the most forward edges of the opening). After driving the car, I found that the tips shifted to the left (while the exhaust was hot). As it cooled, the tips shifted back toward the right. Right now, when it's completely cold, the tips are about 1/8" from the right, and 1/4" from the left, so it's slightly off-center. When fully heated, it will shift about 1/4" to the left (to just touch the left edge of the opening). Does your exhaust do this? Also, I was surprised at the increase in sound inside the car with this exhaust. There is virtually NONE! A very slight increase in low frequency sound around 2000-2300 RPM is about it. The sound coming out of the exhaust, however, is deeper. I won't be waking the neighbors with it. Installation was very easy. Everything aligned perfectly, the mounting hangers did not need to be bent/moved/adjusted. It was a simple matter of removing the old exhaust, transferring the heat shields to the Supersprint exhaust, and installing the Supersprint in the car. I purchased new 'donuts' and nuts/bolts for the mating connection to the resonators. The only piece that really needed to be replaced was the sliding 'donut', since it was stuck to the resonator pipe and broke when I tried to move it. I made some 'before' and 'after' recordings of the sound. If anyone's interested in hearing them, I'll post them to a website. -rb >Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 17:25:26 -0800 >From: Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com >Subject: Laguna Seca noise limits update > > > >I wanted to follow up on a question that I posed to the list back about 6 >months ago about the noise limits at Laguna Seca and my car modifications. <snip> >Configuration: > >Hood without insulation (stock M3 LTW hood). >Jim C cold air intake system with Euro HFM. >Supersprint cat-back exhaust with straight tips. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

I think it has something to do with the unequal length of the pipes. The longer one is the passenger side one so as it heats and expands, it pushes the tips to the left. I only use it on extremely long and boring > drives. Otherwise, it never gets used so removal doesn't bother me much. The bungee cord actually works pretty well. I've had one in place constantly since spring, anchored to the web pockets on the back of the seats. Haven't had the armrest flop forward once since it's been on there. The pocket webbing is stretched a bit by the bungee, but when I take the bungee off and pull on the appropriate places it pretty much rebounds to normal. I guess the bungee looks a bit silly, but if you use a skinny one in a color that matches your seats it's not really that obvious. I'll get around to removing the armrest eventually since I never use it and nobody else drives my car, but if you do occasionally use it on the street then I think a temporary bungee for track days is a fine solution. -- David Ripton dripton@wizard.net
