Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 11:46:58 -0800 From: Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com Subject: Re: Supersprint (was Re: Laguna Seca noise limits update) Ron asked if my supersprint straight tips moved in the rear valence exhaust opening cold vs. hot. Yes, my tips move toward drivers side when hot and move back towards passenger when cold. The movement is probably no more than half an inch. When cold the passenger side tip just touches the forward most area of the rear valence. When hot it doesn't touch. So, must be a differential expansion of different length pre-muffler exhaust pipes when the system is hot. On another note, a 2002 was flagged for noise on Saturday. It was loud and had a single straight tip out the back. It looks like they purchased a chrome exhaust tip thing from the corner NAPA store that you would add to any car to add chrome tips. The clamped it on and aimed the end of the tip toward the drivers side (and away from the microphone). Seems to have done the trick since it was running the rest of the weekend. Also, from what I understand, the Friday groups at LS had to contend with fog in the morning at least that cut visibility down to 100 feet or less. This would definitely increase dB recorded by the microphone. However, I wasn't there so I don't know how bad it got Friday morning or the rest of Friday. Saturday and Sunday there were just high clouds, no ground level fog or clouds at all. Marc 95M3CSL

Yep, I think it came in at 94dB (I was working start/finish at the time and was the "flagger" :-)) > It > was loud and had a > single straight tip out the back. Classic Laguna Seca hack. There are even some people...Jeff...that have such diverters but failed to bring them....and were flagged for sound (I'm just giving Jeff a hard time, I'm sure I'll be paid back in kind at some point in the future <g>). FWIW, my M3 has stock exhaust and JimC intake and has not had problems with sound. Cheers, Jim Bassett

Dan, When you turn the ignition key to the ON position, all of your dash indicator lights should illuminate. It's a quick way to verify that the indicator lights are working. Are you saying that your indicators don't even light up at that time? If so, you should get it fixed immediately. The most critical indicator light is your OIL light. If it doesn't work, don't drive the car until it's fixed. Either that, or install an oil pressure gauge. Not everyone calls them "indicator" lights.... ;-) -rb >Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 11:33:03 -0600 >From: "Dan Hermann" <dah328@hotmail.com> >Subject: RE: Armrest/ASC Solutions? > > >perhaps a silly question, but does the check engine light and the other >lights along the bottom of the instrument cluster work? on my 96 M3, >they're all on the same fuse which has gone out a number of times. i >probably have an intermittent short somewhere in my instrument cluster. :( > >dan >96 M3 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 16:19:11 -0800 From: Roger Baker <rbaker@velodyne.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Re: Laguna Seca noise limits Yep, there are quite a few variables with sound/wave propagation. One of them is the weather (i.e. humidity). I was there this summer in my E36 mut car w/3.2L, OBD1, Jim C Euro Intake, euro maf, JC software, larger injectors, ltw flywheel & UUC DTM exhaust (which is louder than a SuperSprint). I knew it would be close, so for grins I decided to work my way up in RPM & speed by the sound meter until I was full tilt (shifting ~7k right by the booth). I finally hit 93.8 dB when I wound it up to the 7k mark before shifting. I just dropped the shift point to 5500-6k and was never bothered again. For a stock '95 to hit 94 dB tho something sounds a bit off. Maybe toasted exhaust baffles or excessive part wear in the engine/drivetrain. -- Roger Baker peter@guagenti.com wrote: > I think there are a compbination of things going on here.
