#1. Timing Chain Tensioners - from Walt Perry

Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2001 11:17:43 -0800 From: "Walt Perry" <wperry@microsoft.com> Subject: Timing Chain Tensioners HI all, I have been reading the many posts out there about timing chain tensioner issues. I have the marble / rattling noise coming from my 98 M3 as well. It looks like from what people are seeing this is a predominate problem on the 95 M3's. Basically, my question is if this still does pertain to the 98 M3's as well. I would like to try and change the outside Chain tensioner = first before anything else. If that doesn't work then I will do the internal one next. Finally, (I don't know if this is worth doing myself but) I hear that it also helps to replace the valve cover gasket as well because this might be a VANOS issue. Please, if someone can chime in this will be great before I go through a lot of extra / unnecessary work / money to solve this noise issue. Also does anyone have part #'s / prices to the parts listed: 1) external chain tensioner=20 2) internal chain tensioner=20 3) valve cover gasket=20 Cheers, -Walt Perry 98 M3

The oxygen sensors used on the S52 Siemens DME are not your standard Bosch sensor (not even made by Bosch). They don't output a voltage from 0-1v. Instead, they perform more like conventional engine sensors, outputting between .1-4.9v. #5. busted thermostat? - from Jason Bishop

Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2001 11:37:39 -0800 (PST) From: Jason Bishop <jason@secondhat.com> Subject: busted thermostat? Hi gang. my 95 is running very cold. If I drive freeway speeds the temp guage hovers just above the blue section. If I then stop for a few minutes and let it idle, it will warm up to normal temp (pointing straight up). As soon as I drive more than 30mph, temp guage falls again. Seems to be the symtoms of a thermostat thats stuck wide open? I went and got a replacement at the dealer and I was hoping somebody could give some hints on installation. I guess fan needs to come off. I see a big nut with 4 smaller ones around. Can I just unscrew the big on? Any advice on what to remove next would be appreciated. I'm guessing that the thermostat goes in the plastic housing just above the water pump, but its hard to tell. thanks folks. Jason

My understanding of the thermostat is that it merely aids in warming up the car faster with cold starts. I don't think a failing theromstat would cause the car temp to drop below "operating" when you're driving it on the freeway after it's been warmed up... so I'd be inclined to say it's a hosed temp gauge.. but if you can get it up to "normal" by letting it idle, it doesn't sound like it could be that either.. i think it's gotta be something else.. - reid > Hi gang. my 95 is running very cold. I'm ready for a new set of tires and the rain performance (I live in Oregon) and the longer tread life are attractive to me. I have been very happy with the original Pilot MXX3 and the subsequent Pilot Sports on my car. I wonder if the Sport A/S would be a reasonable follow-on tire. Thanks in advance, Ken Dobyns Portland, OR '98 M3

#8. : supercharger clutch - from Paul Elliott

(Is that what I should expect from a Dinan blower?)<< Well, with my Dinan, I still have my stock clutch and I've had the blower for about 30K miles, and there's still life! But it all depends...I guarantee if you plan on doing any significant drag racing using powershifting, you'll make short work of it...But then you'll also be making short work of an AA, Sachs, or other aftermarket 'HD' clutch as well. Dinan says the stock clutch is good to go to about 325 rear wheel Ft Lbs, so youre covered there....What I plan on doing is when my stock clutch does finally show signs of slipping in 'normal' driving, I'm going to replace it with either the AA clutch, or the one that Chester is marketing. from here on the list. >>Also, I plan to use an aquamist system. Anyone have a decently priced source<< I dont know about 'decently priced', but I do know the one from Acitve Autowerkes is designed to work well in your M3. Take a look at it on their website if you havent been there already. --------------------------------------------------------- Paul Elliott '99 White M3; < 35K miles; Dinan stage II sc kit; Rotex pads;X-Brace; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio

A couple of years ago I had identical symptoms. Couldn't get the car up to operating temperature. I found the thermostat frame separated allowing it to be full open all the time. The temp gauge read very low. That's precisely what my 95 did when the thermostat failed. Had the shop change it at Inspection I at 75k and all was well. - Chris
