Date: Mon, 05 Nov 2001 08:45:24 -0800 From: Peter Fanning <p.fanning@verizon.net> Subject: Oil/grease for hinges, dif. oil? I'm completing an Inspection II and have no clue what kind of oil or grease to use on the throttle linkage, door hinges, strike plates, latches, etc. Please let me know what's recommended. Also, will Mobil 1 gear oil work as-is for the differential or do I need to add some kind of friction modifier? Their website mentions that it works with limited slips but I'd like to be sure. TIA, Peter Fanning '98 M3/4

Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2001 05:45:08 -0800 (PST) From: Jason Bishop <jason@secondhat.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] busted thermostat? thanks everybody for the info on replacing thermostat. I got stuck taking the fan off for a few minutes. Who on earth sells 32mm wrenches? I got a crecent wrench that would open up wide enouph and stuck a screwdriver under one of the 4 bolts poking out. Just a little bit of pressure and it came right off. next I unscrewed the plastic thermostat housing and found something decidedly wrong looking. the shaft that the t'stat slides on was bent to one side because the point where its holder attaches to the t'stat body just broke off. Pulled the thing out and found that it would no longer move. I was just permanently open slightly. So it runs too cold in cold weather and too hot in hot weather. luckily its been cold enough last few days that I don't think it bothered the motor at all. So I went to dealer and got a new t'stat. looking at it it should cost $1.50. peice of junk. They want 40 something and take it home to find out that it is marked 92 degrees. my broken one is marked 88degrees. Thats nearly a 10degree fahrenheit difference. Called them back and he said that the 92 supercedes the 88. I'm a bit surprised. Does that sound right? So all I gotta do it clean off the t'stat housing surfaces and put new gasket, bolt housing back on, and spin the fan on. only a few minutes work outside of figuring out how to get fan off. Jason

#4. Insurance, etc. - from Carl Harris Sewell

Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2001 16:15:19 -0500 From: "Carl Harris Sewell" <jzy308@adelphia.net> Subject: Insurance, etc. Just got my new auto policy from Travelers with a "Summary of Major Changes in Your Personal Auto Policy", in response to the new policies approved by the Virginia Bureau of Insurance (and I doubt restricted to VA). One change that lept out: Under the Liability and Physical Damages Coverages, we have added an exclusion that applies to the ownership, maintenance or use of a vehicle while it is inside a racing facility, for the purposes of competing in or practicing for, a prearranged racing or speed contest. This possibility of loss is not appropriate for coverage under a personal auto policy. Thank goodness the Nurburgring is a public road! I wonder how this would apply to drivers' schools. Any comments Carl Sewell 98 M3/4 CCA #151298

Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2001 17:11:46 -0600 From: "Darling Christopher Maj AMC/CEXR" <Christopher.Darling@scott.af.mil> Subject: Handbrake Warning Light Here's a problem I don't remember ever seeing on this or any other list. I have a problem with my handbrake lever, specifically the light circuit. The microswitch somewhere under the lever isn't adjusted properly, and whenever the car hits a bump and jostles the interior, the handbrake light will flicker on. Incredibly annoying. It's getting to where I almost have to push down on the handbrake lever full time to prevent the light from coming on. Any advice? Is this easy to adjust? TIA, Chris Darling 95 M3

I've noticed that I can pull the ebrake lever to the top without as much resistance as I would hope, any tips on tightening the cable, and if this is the problem? BDT

Also the Dakar is a different shade and does not have as much 'pasty white' look to it, if that makes sense. More of a true yellow IMO. Owned a 95 dakar yellow and always had problems with the paint fading. It is most certainly not "a prearranged racing or speed contest" (but good luck trying to convince your insurance adjuster of this subtle difference.) On a serious note, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who's filed an insurance claim after having dented their car at a driver's school event. What did you insurance adjuster tell you? Were you covered or not? Kevin M. Gregg kevingregg@home.com Columbia MD 1997 BMW M3 Estoril blue coupe BMWCCA member http://members.home.net/kevingregg/m3/
