#1. [E36M3] Buttonwillow: brakes/S03s/good times! - from twisty M3

God, what a wonderful place!!! It was race layout #13, clockwise, which is with the bus stop rather than the dog leg. Good times!!!!! Some listers had inquired on the performance of the S03s, and I didn't want to give a full impression until I had them on the track. Not bad... Not bad at all. Don't get me wrong, they're still a street tire, but a very good one and once I got them dialed in to my liking, I never once lost confidence in them. I started with really high pressures, thinking that they'd be better extremely stiff... Not so!!! I had them at 42psi (hot) for the first session and it was bad. It was like driving on oil... No grip at all. I dropped them down to about 36 psi (hot) which is where I like them at street temps as well. Much, much better. To tell you the truth, they actually seemed to get better as the day went on, and were just ast good at the end of each 30 minute session as they were at the beginning. Wear wasn't too bad either (7 30-minute sessions in one day!!!) considering. Still, they are a street tire, but a very good one. For the first session (with high pressures) my instructor was worried about how slippery it felt. For subsequent sessions (with the lower pressure), I had one instructor who thought at first that they *may* have been r-compounds... Of course, he wasn't driving at the time, or he may have had a different opinion. ;) No for my brakes though... Whoah!!! I cooked those suckers up nice. Completely warped the heck out the the Euro floaters, but I forgot to re-torque the wheels after they'd been taken off by a shop last, and I could almost guarantee that they were overtorqued or unevenly torqued. I also had a tendancy to ride the brakes a little long for turn one, but I don't think the one turn would've warped them so badly (They're BAD!!) I made big efforts to drive around for several minutes in the paddock before parking as well. This organization didn't have a full cool-down lap though, so that could've added to the problem (checkered flag at Magic Mtn., rather than start/finish). I seemed to have really baked my pads, and I'm a bit concerned. Don't know if it was just paint on them, or what, but they started as black pads (Pagid 4-2-1). Now the fronts are SILVER (black was flaking off) and the rears are ready to have the black flake off. What's that all about?? They VERY jagged looking now also, and, even though there's a good amount of pad left, I'm considering swapping pads this week. Once a pad is completely cooked, has it lost it's abilities? I can't tell right now as they're hard to read through the violent shaking during braking. The wet skid pad... THAT was fun!!! Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 09:04:23 -0800 From: Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com Subject: Driving schools and insurance Nurburgring and schools: I don't think that your US based insurance is in effect there. You are given insurance from BMW on the European delivery program to cover you for 30 days in Europe. I believe that that insurance covers you on the nurburgring for your ED car. However, I have never done ED nor driven in Europe. Driving SCHOOLS are not racing. That is why we always call it a school or instruction or education. We do NOT call it racing. That is why timing is strictly prohibited at the schools and you are booted out if found doing it. You are putting everyone at risk for potential non-coverage if there is a problem on the track and the insurance company finds out that some people were timing (and/or engaged in racing). My 95 M3 had an OCE with damage in 97. State Farm did cover the 13K damages. However, they were not happy, asked a lot of questions, and told us to go find another insurance company as they were not going to let us renew. Subsequently had Progressive and now Prudential, but, no accidents anywhere since we have had to switch. I believe that MA put some language into the insurance in that state that implied that organized car activities on race tracks were not covered (implied that even if there was no timing or practice or racing going on that there would be no coverage). I can't really speak to that as I am not in the insurance industry nor do I live in MA. Marc 1995 M3 regular (track OCE with major damage experienced) 1995 M3 CSL (no damages.....)

Everything went smoothly except replacing the rear springs. I left the OEM on for now. What is the easiest way to get them out. I followed the Bentley instructions. Support suspension, disconnect shock, lower suspension gently...remove spring. But it doesn't come out. Even if I put downward pressure on the upper control arm. Am I missing something? Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 10:00:32 -0800 (PST) From: Joe Tan <mailjtan@yahoo.com> Subject: Radiator flush questions I am told that you are supposed to use distilled water instead of tap water because of the chemical on tap water causes corrosion to the radiator. But then at the same time I am supposed to flush the radiator with my hose to flush out the old coolant out. Doesn't that leave some tap water in your cooling system and cause corrosion? What is the correct way to do a radiator flush then? Joe. '98 M3/4 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Find a job, post your resume. http://careers.yahoo.com

You might consider leaving the M3 stock and just upgrading wife. (j/k) Depends what you're looking for: more power, firmer ride, better handling, etc. Assuming you're looking for a bit more zip, I would go for the JC injector/intake setup. Runs about $800 or so. The car will be noticably quicker and the intake growl is great. >Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 11:46:41 -0500 >From: "Matthew A. Caffrey" <mcaffrey@caffreysmith.com> >Subject: Chips and stuff > >Ok. Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 12:48:18 -0600 From: "The Abels" <aAbel@austin.rr.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Chips and stuff Matt, Exhaust: no gains, sound change only CAI (cold air intake): noticeable improvement UDP(underdrive pullies): noticeable improvement (caveat: controversial mod) lightened fly: over $1,000 installed, better rev matching, better acceleration (cons, tends to make rattle at idle, slightly harder to launch the car smoothly, and cannot be used with UDP) Software: marginal, if any, gains Cams: soon to be available, 50+ hp gains, but pricey at around $3k for the kit -------------- Beyond the bolt-ons noted above, you'd have to go with forced induction, either turbo or blower. Minimum price tag is $5k sans installation. My advice? get a CAI, then go with chassis/suspension/safety improvements (tranny mounts, short shifter, x-brace, strut braces, coilovers, Stygar clutch pedal/stop, rear shock mounts, trailing arm bushings, maybe sways, stuff like that), then UDP (noting caveat abvoe). Oh, almost forgot. The most cost effective mod is a doing a driver's school. You'll learn so much about your car's abilities, yours, and be safer on the street. You'll have loads of fun too.
