I'm paying $2000/year for 100k/300k and > i pay about $550/six months through state farm for 100/300/100. i paid almost twice that much for 100/300/50 from progressive. when people talk about progressive it's usually about how good their rates are. that certainly wasn't my experience. And they keep lowering it! I also have way more than the minimum liability coverage. Lot's of 100K+ cars you can crash into here in LA... ;) Juan (Forever grateful to my broker...) Do You Yahoo!? You want page 13 of this document: http://www.eurospeed.org/e36m3faq.pdf Talks about BMW P/N 82 11 0 026 663 BMW Advanced Battery Charging System. On sales now at Circle BMW for $53 ! http://www.circlebmw.com/parts/access/82110026663.htm Seems to measure all the right variables that a charger should know to be called an intelligent charger: -voltage, current, temperature, and time. The only thing really missing is a thermocouple in your battery! Maybe when we get 42 volts we'll finally get better batteries with sulfate remover circuits and charging thermocouples. That document above also addresses your other Winterizing questions. - Skip Dan Miley wrote: > > Date: Tue, 06 Nov 2001 17:27:49 -0500 > From: Dan Miley <dmiley@rcn.com> > Subject: Pull battery for winter storage? > > I'm driving my M3 to a garage that's 50 miles away for > winter storage, so I won't get there for periodic drives > during the winter. #5. High RPM power loss -- finally solved! - from Scott Chan
Top
Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2001 11:21:20 -0800 From: Scott Chan <scottch@juniper.net> Subject: High RPM power loss -- finally solved! I had a devil of a time diagnosing a high RPM power loss on my '95 M3 race car. Above 5500 RPM, every dyno run was different, so we suspected some intermittent electronic sensor or actuator. After checking or swapping just about everything we could borrow or buy with no luck, the problem got worse... Eventually (after 5 months) a bad exhaust valve manifested itself as lousy idle and even worse power. Disassembling the head revealed that several of the valve retainers were slipping (1-3mm), allowing the valve to "float" at high RPM. Eventually one valve floated enough to kiss the piston and tweak the valve. It turns out early '95 M3s had weak valve retainers, which were superceded sometime after mine was built (1/95). A new valve and 24 updated retainers, and we're back in business. Several other racers had seen this problem as well, but usually with more catastrophic valve-to-piston interactions. I kinda wish mine had been more dramatic so we could have figured it out sooner. -- Scott

Either a white lithium grease (I think you can get it in a spray can) or "regular" spray lubricant. I've used the "regular" spray lubricant in that same application with no problems. Plus, it's useful for stopping the squeaks on Kim's glider/rocker :-) > Also, will Mobil 1 gear oil work as-is for the differential > or do I need to > add some kind of friction modifier? Their website mentions > that it works > with limited slips but I'd like to be sure. Not sure about the Mobil 1 oil - I use the Red Line 75W90 in my car. Red Line has a separate 75W90NS for use in non-limited-slip diffs. Maybe someone else here has used the Mobil 1 oil, but if their website says it'll work in a LS application, then there shouldn't be a problem. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

My 95 dyno'd at 218 to the wheels but that was with chip and CAI. Most of the 3.2 cars dyno'd between 220 and 230 so it sounds like you are in the ballpark. I was thoroughly disgusted with the high graphite content in the stock pads on my 97. After just a day or two of driving, the front wheels looked like somebody shaded them for me. Also, it only took about three days for the pads to squeal after the car was washed. It was almost embarrassing driving a beautiful M3 and pulling up next to other cars at stoplights while squealing away. I wanted a pad comparable, or better, to the stock pads that produced less dust and, for the love of God, didn't squeal!!! I decided to try the Hawk HPS and I've been very happy with them. They've been on the car for ~10kmi now and I've not once heard them squeal. Now, if I happen to neglect washing her for 2 weeks, there's only a hint of dust front and rear. IMO, they offer slightly more braking torque than the stock pads. Are there any other impressions of the Hawk HPS pads out there? Happy but curious, I contacted USAA and asked why my rates had dropped (Not that I was complaining). USAA informed me that my rates had dropped because I had recently moved to a nicer area - I then informed them that I have lived in the same house for the last 2+ years? USAA then told me that my car was getting older and was no longer considered an expensive sports car. I asked them why the sudden drop and not a gradual one - I was on the phone but the response was the equivalent of a blank stare. USAA then informed me that an accident I had 3 years ago had just come off of my record. I informed them that this was great news since I had not had an accident and they probably owed me a large amount of money. They agreed and told me that they would calculate how much they owed me and credit it to my account. 2 weeks later after no further contact from USAA, I called to inquire on the status of my account. I was then informed that after further review they discovered that they had NOT been charging me for an accident. USAA went on to explain that real reason my rate dropped (4th excuse were on now) was that there had been a statewide change in the base rates on 5/10/01. Evidentially, this change in rates caused most to experience an increase in rates but lucky for me mine dropped 20%. Not knowing which end was up at this point, I contacted the PA insurance commission and inquired about my situation. The PA insurance commission informed that there was in fact a change in the rates in May that could have affected my premium, but would not be able to be more specific until I filed a formal complaint. I have not yet decided to file the complaint. Any thoughts, similar experiences in PA?
