I took my car to the driving school at Road < Atlanta a few weeks ago. Before the < school, I had my mechanic put 5w30 Mobile 1 in it. I also < changed the trans fluid to Mobil 1 < synthetic ATF fluid. A little while after the school, I started < hearing a strange sound from the < engine. It sounds kinda like a choppy rattle. Hard to describe. < I been able to determine that < it only happens between 1500 and 1700 rpm. It will make the < noise while in neutral, but the car < must be warm and then the noise isn't very loud. It is loudest < while I am in 1st gear in a < parking lot and the engine stays around 1500-1700 rpm. It < abrubly stops on either side of those < speeds. Since I can't easily recreate the noise in neutral, I < haven't been able to determine < exacly where it is coming from. Sure your mechanic didn't stick a lightweight flywheel in there while you weren't looking? ;) ------------------------------ Lee Conte San Diego, California

With an 18% drivetrain loss, that means youre making 270 hp at the crank...Now, I know bmw rates their cars conservatively, but This (30 hp) Conservatively?? Do you have any goodies installed now to help account for the difference? Oh, I read it late...you are shark injected and CAIed. Well, looks like thats getting you some ( Id guess anywhere from about 15 to 25 rwhp) bang for your buck...I know Jim C always used to tell us that the stock OBDII M3s he's examined would usually make between 195 and 210 rwhp, :--) . At any rate, I need to get mine dynoed, and I didnt know of one near me...Im in westchester county (white plains), NY. Any idea how far he is from me? Rates? How would I proceed with him to get mine done? #3. E36M3 wheels vs. E46 330 sport package wheels - from Vern Anderson

Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2001 23:08:41 -0500 From: Vern Anderson <vanderson@cerebellumsoft.com> Subject: E36M3 wheels vs. E46 330 sport package wheels Hello everyone, A friend of mine just picked up a new E46 330 Ci with the sport package. He wants to pick up another set of wheels for race tires for autcrossing next year (DStock). I know the E46 328/330 sport packages have the same wheel diameter and width (staggered 17x7.5 and 17x8.5), but do they also have the same offset as well (41mm)? I know the bolt pattern is the same and I'm 99% sure the hub diameter is the same. If they do have the same specs, he can then easily pick up a used set of staggered E36 M3 wheels for race tires. Thanks for any info! Vern Anderson 98 M3/2 #68 BSP, where the wheel decisions are easy - just shove the biggest damn things under the fenders that will fit (17x9's in my case...)

Short of it. 1 day your car might make 230 and the very next it could make 205. The engine hasnt changed, but there are so many variables involved, that it is not a realistic, exact number. Only way to compare cars woudl be to dyno them after each other on teh same dyno on the same day. I have personally seen differences of 20hp from a tuesday to friday of the same week dynoing the same car on the same dyno. Kinda why doing 'in car' timed acceleration runs from 20 to 70 etc are a better measurement of hp gains or loses vs doing dyno runs. Also, I have seen a 95 LTW dyno 239hp with CAI, JC chip, Borla muffler. It averaged 237hp over 3 different dyno sessions over the course of 3 months, with 4 runs each session. For reference on that dyno, my personal daily driver, 95 M3 dynoed 207hp-209hp with a JC chip, CAI and same muffler. on 2 different sessions but same days that the LTW was tested. Mike and yes, my LTW easily felt 30hp stronger than my daily driver.

I've been using PF-Zs on the street to complement my PF90/97 on the track and I love them. They are not very dusty and stop very well plus they're far less noisy than those darned PF90/97s. They do seem to wear faster than a factory pad, probably a slightly softer compound but I am sticking with them for the street on our cars. I have no problems recommending them. #7. 2 different rear spoilers - from Michael Stembera

Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 23:14:32 -0600 From: "Michael Stembera" <m_stembera@yahoo.com> Subject: 2 different rear spoilers The E36M3 FAQ at <http://www.eurospeed.org/e36m3faq.pdf> http://www.eurospeed.org/e36m3faq.pdf says: Q. Why do some coupes have different BMW rear wings? A. BMW produced two rear wing designs with an integrated third brake light. If the option was ordered, M3 coupes were delivered with a high arch rear wing, whereas M3 sedans came with a flatter, squared-off wing design. However, for reasons unknown, if the wing was added later on by the dealer, the wing designed for the sedan was installed on both models. When looking at a coupe now, you should be able to determine whether the wing was installed at the factory or not. BMW M3 Coupe Rear Wing .............................. P/N 51.71.2.260.319 I'm trying to decide which of the two spoilers to order and was wondering if anyone had pictures of either spoiler so I could see the difference. Thanks, Mike

Best I can tell is I grabbed 1st instead of 3rd on my downshift going into Turn 5. I'm still boggled that this even happened, but <shrug>, that's racing. >I take it that it happened to your 325...If you had been driving your >M, do you think you'd have had the same outcome? Yep, on the 325. Would have had the same outcome on the M3, the motors are essentially the same; however, and I have to check this out, the transmission may be different and the M3 tranny may offer more resistance going into 1st than the tranny in the 325. But that's merely speculation, I'm not going to test it out :-) Oh well, this just hasn't been my year. Looks like it'll just be some test days over the next couple of months and back to racing next year.
