How long has it taken any of you to swap out the water pump, and swap > the radiator? (Need to estimate how long I will not have a car for). Not counting the water pump, replacing the radiator, thermostat, housing, and hoses takes about 4 hours. That includes complete disassembly, assembly, etc. If you want to take your time, it's a good thing to plan as an all-day affair on a Saturday. You do need a special tool to remove the fan clutch, and a big wrench (32mm?). This isn't much money, but you need to have it before you begin. > 1B. Is there a write up on swapping the radiator? The Bentley Manual has an excellent write up on overhauling the coolant system. > 3. Any recommended radiator vendors? From what I have read, BMW genuine Joe Martinez on eBay. He lists them for $140. > is the way to go instead of a fluidyne or other aftermarket? Yes... or No? There are no aftermarklet alternatives worth looking at. At around 100k, the plastic neck on the radiator cracks (happened at 78k on my wife's 328i, and surface cracks were forming at 114k on my '95). The preferred alternative would be an all-aluminum model, but none exists. You can have one made for you for about $1k though. ;-) > 4. What are all the main cooling hose part numbers? (Upper radiator, etc.) Ask whomever you buy the radiator from for the upper and lower hoses. That'll do it. > 5. I do not have much experience with coolant. Can I just purchase the > cheapest stuff at a the local gas station or supermarket ($6.00/gallon) or > is there some kind of company/chemical that I need to look out for and > ensure that I use in my car? According to my mechanic (Bill Arnold in Nor. Cal.), all of the anti-freeze out there comes from one of two plants. Simply buy something reasonably priced from your local auto parts store, and you'll be fine. When I put coolant back in my car after doing the work, I did an 80/20 mix of distilled water to coolant, and threw in a bottle of water wetter. I have heard from a number of people that this is a good way to go to keep your temps down under hard driving. My average oil temps at the track were down a bit (not enough to say it was a drastic change), and the car hasn't run hot. -p ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

I got 223 the first time, with dinan cai, shark injector and UUC exhaust, then 230 the last few times with the same mods plus BBS RKs and a ltw flywheel. Gonna have results again pretty soon, once I get the blower on... :) (my house looks like someone blew up a Pep Boys by it... parts everywhere! ) -kit, who realizes why dinan charges 20 hours labor for the blower... it's easily going to take me that long... -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .

#3. [E36M3] When to rebuild calipers? - from twisty M3

Date: Thu, 08 Nov 2001 09:26:30 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] When to rebuild calipers? Changing pads and rotors tomorrow or Saturday morning and I'm wondering how often one should have the calipers rebuilt. It's a '99M3 with just under 65K miles. Much canyon driving and a few drivers schools, but this last school is what has me wondering. These rotors are violently warped and eaten up, and the pads went from black to silver... I'm guessing things got pretty damn hot in there, but I'm not sure what relevance that has to caliper rebuilding. Anyone? Tim - Is is possible you are confusing the Airbag light and the AntiLockBraking light? I'm familiar with issue on the airbag light and the drivers seatbelt recepticle, but I did not think that had any impact on the ABS system. Let me know! Chris

Yep, check out the info at http://www.racepad.com/. Click "Tech" at the top, then "Change Brake Pads" on the left. I used that info the first time changed pads, it's very good. You might also think about getting a Bentley manual. Trust me, you won't be stopping at just changing brakes :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP

What sort of gains can be had > with the head work and manifold coating stated above? High RPM benefits > only? Who accomplished the work for you? I'd like to see the answer to this one as well =) For reasons only know to me and a select few, my rear exhaust manifold had to come off. I had a new gasket just in case....and we used it, but the gasket is a sandwiched metal type construction that's sealed around the openings for the ports. Next, we looked at the physical openings and saw that the exhaust manifold ports were actually smaller than the openings in the gasket. So perhaps the '95s were different... Yep, lot's of heat. (Was it you that was concerned about the color change on the pads? It's normal, stuff changes color sometimes when it heats up. The PF90/97's that I used to run always turned a rust color after the first track event on them.) > I'm > guessing things got > pretty damn hot in there, but I'm not sure what relevance that has to > caliper rebuilding. Anyone? The only time I've had calipers rebuilt (both fronts) was when the dust boot popped out. Otherwise, inspect the boots for signs of cracking/tearing. If they're intact, then they should be fine. Just my 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - never had a braking problem 1993 325is #44 KP - AP Racing brakes, probably no braking problems, but not that I would know yet :-)
