The M3 (and just about all BMWs, except the M1) have drum brake rear parking brakes, even if the rear brakes are discs. The drum is inside the rotor hat in those cases. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

The only way to explain it is that it > sounded like something rubbing around against the thin "heat shield" that > surrounds the rotors. This is a very common occurence. The first time I had it happen, I had just come in after a hard-driven autocross run at a very gravelly lot (Golden Gate Fields, Berkeley). I thought something was seriously wrong (this is coming from a guy who had a caliper bolt shear on the highway in his VW). I checked it out and could find nothing. I ended up driving home, and put on my parking brake at one-click. That made the noise subside. Eventually it stopped all together. All I could think was that the item was worn away by the shoes being held against the rotors -- either because it was in the drum and was eroded or because it was in the backing plate and with the shoes engaged there was no vibration allowed in the rotor. The next time it happened to me (same place, same situation), someone recommended a trick -- the moment it happens, put the car in reverse and run the car backwards. That did it. No more noise. Since then, I have seen this happen to four other E36's. -peterg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

You're aware that I "supervise", right? :-) http://members.home.net/jimbassett/MVC-844F.JPG However, since my fee is rather minimal (a good microbrew), you'll have to drive up here. (FWIW, brake pad changes were the first thing I learned to do on the M3, just using the instructions at racepad.com and a Bentley manual. Don't be such a wimp, and go do it <bg>.) Positives: Takes 0 space from trunk, looks great. Bass is 10x as good as stock. Negatives: Not as much Bass as a regualar box or custom enclosure below the deck, kinda pricy. Conclusion: A great compromise between price, elegance and performance between a big box and a custom deck system. 2) Directed Audio Pro 6.5" components: Price Paid: $250 Positives: Super smooth Silk Tweeter that requires minimal modifications to the door panels. Natural bass that's a good combination for a sub. Negatives: Can get much of the performance for less money, 6.5" woofers are a PITA to install up front (though few 5.25" woofers have enough mid-bass to smoothly transition to a sub) 3) PPI PC4200 Amp. Price Paid: $160 (New on E-Bay) Positives: Good clean power at a great price Negatives: Installation of any amp is a pain. But, to install the Stealth Box requires replacement of the stock amp anyway.. 4) Creative Nomad Jukebox. Price Paid: $250 Positives: 6Gig of MP3's that fit in the sunglass holder. Negatives: Limited battery life, currently using LOW-FI tape adapter, hard to use when your eyes are on the road. -Matt --- Seth Frader-Thompson <fraderth@colorado.edu> wrote: > Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 13:20:06 -0700 (MST) > From: Seth Frader-Thompson <fraderth@colorado.edu> > Subject: stereo survey > > With as much audio installation info as there is on > the web for BMWs, I > haven't found much in the way of subjective reviews > of components or > entire systems. #7. Re:stereo survey - from Danny Li

Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 09:50:20 +0800 From: "Danny Li" <air23@netvigator.com> Subject: Re:stereo survey Well, let me try and share my experience with you on this. I started the whole process by putting in a new deck and changer and powering the speakers straight from the deck. I also added a 10inch sub in the trunk using a RF monoblock. The sound of the factory 3 ways were marginal but better than the original deck and factory amp. I added new 3 way passive crossovers to bypass the factory settings. My initial pursuit was to get some nice bass going into the system so I also installed an Audiocontrol epicenter to improve the bass boost. This lasted me some 6 months before I get sick of the mediocre sound of the factory speakers. The biggest change then came from the installation of a set of Focal 136V 2 way splits. I had looked at every component set available which could fit into the existing speaker locations without the need to cut and anything in the car. Although the MB Quarts have a set just for the E36 M3, the speaker drivers look pretty cheap and poorly designed. The magnet size were very average for such an expensive component set. I also looked at ADS, RF, and Nakamichi. I finally settled on the Focal because I had heard these several times in other vehicles and they performed superbly. I took an alternative route in the installation. I abandoned the 3 way design of the existing layout and opted for a 2 way location. One of the biggest problems of the original speaker locations were that the soundstage and imaging were very poor. The sound from the highs and mids were very disparate and the sound very unnatural. I installed the mid-range 5 1/4 driver in the stock location in the footwell. With the tweeter, I used the angled mounts and mounted those on the footwell speaker grill and angled them towards the driver and passenger location. This gave a tremendous soundstage for both the passenger and the driver. I also took out the rear speakers and replaced these with a set of JL stealthboxes. I subsequently added a Genesis 4 Ch amp (hand made) to drive the entire system. Considering my objective was a good sounding system aimed at sound quality rather than boomy bass and retaining the factory look, I'm very happy with the system. The next upgrade would most likely be a new deck. > -------------------- 2 -------------------- > Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 13:20:06 -0700 (MST) > From: Seth Frader-Thompson <fraderth@colorado.edu> > Subject: stereo survey > > With as much audio installation info as there is on the web for BMWs, I > haven't found much in the way of subjective reviews of components or > entire systems.
