#1. Free-wheeling ignition lock cylinder - from Dan Hermann

Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2001 12:41:44 -0600 From: "Dan Hermann" <dah328@hotmail.com> Subject: Free-wheeling ignition lock cylinder i'd had the above problem a couple times on starting my car, but removing the key and retrying always worked. when i pulled into work today and shut off the car, the ignition cylinder free-wheeled and the key came out without turning off the car. of course, the engine died since i simultaneously let out the clutch with the car in first, but everything else was still on. the key would go back in, but of course, the cylinder wouldn't turn. bottom line, the dealer says i need a new coded lock cylinder that has to come from germany (1-2 weeks). any alternatives that are available? arg, just not my day, i guess. dan 96 M3 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Rob, Sounds just like the classic symptoms of a thermostat stuck in the open position. Been there, done that! Joe ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rob Verenna" <rob@willraceforbeer.com> To: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Friday, November 16, 2001 9:49 AM Subject: [E36M3] Odd water temp behavior? | Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2001 12:43:31 -0500 | From: "Rob Verenna" <rob@willraceforbeer.com> | Subject: Odd water temp behavior? | | My water temperature has started acting funny and I was wondering if | anyone had some ideas what might be causing it. The car is a '95 M3, | 84k miles, 11/95 build date. I haven't changed the water pump or | radiator, but they might be the later units as my CD Changer | connector is actually the same as the '96 MY, not '95. | | Anyway, the symptoms are the gauge indicating the car running COLD. | The car has always operated with the water gauge at the half-way | mark. Takes about 5 minutes to warm up (depending on ambiant and how | long since the last drive) but it always goes to the vertical and | stays there dead calm. Now, the car runs at the 1/4 mark, or even | below. There is also occasional slow fluctuation around the 1/4 | point. This has happened every drive for the past few days. | Sometimes after 15+ minutes (well past the normal warm-up period), | the gauge will go to the normal half-way point and stay there as it | always has in the past. | | I checked the coolant level this morning while the car was cold and | it was right where the mark said it should be. The neck of the | radiator does not really have any "crusties" around it; instead, it | looks as if some has overflowed (dried drip paths running down the | side). Performance is normal and even though it is November, air | temperatures have been in the 60s here all week. Even so, I've had | the car through the past few winters and while warm-up may take a few | extra minutes, the "normal" indication on the water gauge was always | the same. | | Anyone have an idea? Should I be ordering a new radiator (and water | pump while I'm at it), or do I have a stuck thermostat? As you can | tell, I'm not the most mechanically adept person - I just want to | know if I need to get this done asap or not. | | Thanks in advance!! | | - rob | | -->> FREE Perl CGI scripts add WEB ACCESS to your | -->> POP E-Mail accounts! Andrew, having owned Fiberglas Lotuses, I have some knowledge of small repairs. First, are there any stress cracks around the damaged area? If, so you will need to grind down until you get past the cracks. If not you can just get an epoxy gel-coat two part material and mix it up and working fast smooth in onto the damaged area leaving it just slightly higher than the surrounding area. Then sand it down until it blends smoothly into the undamaged surface after it is set hard. If you have the dreaded stress cracks, you may need to actually patch the area with woven Fiberglas material soaked in Fiberglas epoxy building up layer by layer until just below the surface of surrounding undamaged area and finish off with the gel-coat as above. Good luck BTW, kits are available at most all auto stores. Joe Dyer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew E. Rob, Your "late" '95 M3 does have the old plastic water pump from factory And sounds like your thermostat is gettting stuck open. i don't think you need a new radiator. The first thing I would do is replace both the thermostat and the water pump before it fails and bring your entire cooling system with it. After someone broke my anti-theft tab (of course it wasn't me ;) at least I don't remember doing it, anyway) my cylinder would occasionally spin but did work. Then one day that piece of loose plastic must have gotten stuck and caused the same exact problem, on a Saturday. Luckily, I caught the dealer's mechanic who waited for me. Don't forget to disconnect the battery. Mine was covered under warranty :) I think the job is ~$800 for parts/labor. HTH.
