#1. RE: [E36M3] UPDATE: changed thermostat and waterpump - from Justin P.

Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 13:51:17 -0800 From: "Justin P." <jpaek421@home.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] UPDATE: changed thermostat and waterpump Okay, I narrowed it down to two things(hopefully) It's either a faulty thermostat or a passage restriction in the radiator. I drained, flushed and refilled the coolant taking all the proper procedures. I felt the radiator hoses while bleeding the system and noticed the upper radiator hose remained hot while the lower radiator hose remained cold. I take it that the new thermostat I put in is faulty and is not opening properly to allow the coolant to flow back into the radiator from the block. Furthermore, is the directional arrow/vent hole on the thermostat supposed to be vertical or facing the opening on the right(meaning the arrow on the thermostat facing horizontally right)? Thanks in advance for any help. -----Original Message----- From: Matt Henson [mailto:hensonator@yahoo.com] Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2001 7:49 AM To: E36M3 Subject: Re: [E36M3] Need Help: changed thermostat and waterpump Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 07:40:15 -0800 (PST) From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Need Help: changed thermostat and waterpump I've heard a few tips for bleeding the cooling system: 1) If the front of the car is in the air, try lowering it. Or visa-versa. It's supposed to be level when you bleed it. 2) Drill a small hole in the thermostat prior to installation. The hole should be at the top. 3) Drill and tap a new bleeder screw hole at the top of a metal thermostat housing. -Matt --- The Abels <aAbel@austin.rr.com> wrote: > Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2001 23:29:11 -0600 > From: "The Abels" <aAbel@austin.rr.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Need Help: changed thermostat > and waterpump > > One of two things, in my experience: > > 1. #2. [E36M3] Brakes Revisited - from twisty M3

Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 15:18:25 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Brakes Revisited After the scarey squeeling coming from the rear, and figuring that was just a rock or something that god stuck in there, another new set of noised developed. First from the rear, and now all four corners, it seems, except maybe the front driver's side. A fun "little" metallic rattle. What in the...? I got a bit panicked and ended up getting my car up on a lift to have it investigated. The noise came over harsh bumps, and now could even be heard by simply hitting the tire with the palm of my hand. Upon further inspection, the R4 pads don't seem to fit perfectly. Not sure what the technical name for them is, but the "T" on each side that holds them in place are about 1mm off compared to how stock pads fit. Apparently, in some "lucky" cases, the R4 pads do make that infamous PF90 rattle. (We verified that it was just the pads by holding a finger against the backing plate while hitting the wheel... No noise. No finger=cling! cling!). Even during the initial install, we had to file down the rear pad's sensor point to fit the brake light sensor. No that I know what the sound is, it's isn't frightening, but it's annoying as hell. Anyone had quality control issues with the Porterfield pads? I only have them on for now, as I'm planning on a Willow Spings event at the end of the month, as well as, if all goes well, Laguna Seca at the end of December. After that, I'll put on a genuine street pad, probably R4S, as I'd imagine the compounds are well-suited for swapping back and forth on the same rotors. Has anyone had any fitment issues with the R4S pads? In that case, Xylene is everywhere in that area. All of the semiconductor fabs use it to clean the photo-resist off of their equipment and they buy it by the 55 gallon drum. Do you know anyone that works at these places? They tend to have 1 gallon bottles of Xylene on hand as well. Don't ask how I know, that was at least 10 years ago, when I worked at Siliconix, right off the 101. Have you tried Center Paint on Stevens Creek? They carry all types of odd stuff (ever need Corvette panel adhesive, now you know where to go). Another place that carries a wide array of solvents is Tap Plastics. I only have one question about the Xylene you want. Are you looking for Ortho-dimethylbenzene or Meta-dimethylbenzene? #6. rear brake pad life? - from Paul Elliott
Top
Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 22:42:01 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: rear brake pad life? On my stock rear oem pads, I've run one autox and no track days. Just pretty aggressive 40 mile per day type commuting. And some normally pretty quick stops and starts, as befits a Supercharged application. On Saturday, I purchased 2 Pilot Sports for my rears, which after about 27K miles were down to the wear bars. While the wheels were off, I took a flashilight to the rear calipurs and was shocked to see the pads down to about 4 or 5 mm, ie, the pads were about as thick as the backing, which usually means its time to replace. These stock pads only had 34K miles on them, and for the type of driving I do, I was shocked that they were toast already. Can folks chime in, who do my type of driving (obviously you track junkies will find nothing unusual about this longevity!) as to what your rear pad experience has been? For replacment, I'm sticking with an aftermarket pad I've done very well with, the Rotex semimetallics. Apparently, > in some "lucky" cases, the R4 pads do make that infamous PF90 rattle. Sounds right to me. My R4s are nasty loud on the street. My wife refers to it as "the garbage truck effect." Also, the anti-rattle clips are a joke compared to the stock pads. One is loose, the other broke off pulling 'em off after the first track event. They work well on the track, though.

#9. brake caliper "rebuild"; replacing the dust boots - from Todd C. Merrill

Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2001 10:42:06 -0500 (EST) From: "Todd C. Merrill" <tmerrill@mathworks.com> Subject: brake caliper "rebuild"; replacing the dust boots What exactly does the phrase brake caliper "rebuild" mean? The rubber boots or dust rings or whatever they are called that surround the piston are getting tattered, so I'd like to replace them. Is this a difficult/risky job? Any links available on how to do this? Any special tools needed to get the piston out, and then back in, or do the boots just come out and get stuffed back in without having to remove the piston from the caliper? My skill level is basic DIY maintenance like oil changes and brakes (pads, rotors, parking brake shoes). Until next time...
