I had a power steering hose break and limped the car to the dealership one Fri morning about 2 months ago. I had no appointment but they got the car fixed in one day and charged me only a $50 "co payment". The repair was done as a warranty item. Oh yeah, by total coincidence, I had free use of a loaner car while mine was in for repair. BTW, I did not buy my car at Russel. Good luck! #2. GPS - from John Pease

Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 08:16:59 -0800 (PST) From: John Pease <john_pease123@yahoo.com> Subject: GPS Marc: I bought the Garmin E-trex vista. Things I like: Big memory. Compass Altimeter Download is easy from my computer Great display. High resolution GPS (don't remember the buzz word) Things I don't like: Cannot make altimeter work. I should call them. Things I hate: NO provision for external antenna. This is an important one for auto use and hiking. For auto use, the mounting location is constrained by both a good viewing angle AND good signal reception. For hiking, the unit must see the sky at all times to keep track of you progress during a trip. I lose signal quite often using the Vista with the neck strap. The partial solution here is to use way points, but this is a hassle. I consider myself an amateur GPS user, so some of the abovementioned problems might be caused by self-generated stupidity. Hope this helps John Pease __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! GeoCities - quick and easy web site hosting, just $8.95/month. http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/info1

#3. [E36M3] Symptoms of Bad Wheel Bearings? - from twisty M3

Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 08:30:29 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Symptoms of Bad Wheel Bearings? Anyone care to give a list of symptoms associated with bad wheel bearings? Couldn't find anything on Ron Stygar's web page. I've got a '99 M3 (67K miles) with intermittent stearing noise that has come back (went away for a while, so I figured it was a fluke). Only happens when the wheels are turned to the right, and seems to be coming from the passenger side front. I've tried the pull-the-wheel test, and nothing seems to happen. Pulling from the sides of the wheel seems to make some noise, however, but it's hard to differentiate between my brake pad rattling and what could be wheel bearings. One other thing... Fan for the climate control still doesn't seem to work properly. There's heat coming out, but regardless of how high the blower is turned, the volume of air stays the same. Doesn't seem to be a relay, and one tech. suggested buying a new climate control consol and just swapping that out... That's a pricey experiment though, so has anyone experienced a similar issue to this? Thanks, as alway. #4. Suspension Upgrade Decision - from Rich

Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 11:34:34 -0500 From: "Rich" <rehrlich98m3@mindspring.com> Subject: Suspension Upgrade Decision Let me thank all of you who gave me advice on how to upgrade the suspension on my car. I got a range of responses, with the answers pretty much evenly split between full coil-overs (of various makes) and the TC Kline Trackline kit. Well, I decided to go with the TC Kline Trackline kit. I feel that it will provided the improved handling I want without the overly complicated coilover adjustments. Now, to wait until January/Feb for the install! I will post a review of the kit after the install. Thank you all again. Rich Ehrlich Alpine White 1998 M3

Unfortunatly, the jury is still out on its root cause. Many of us have replaced the knock sensors and spark plugs and the problem hasn't been fixed. There's a theory that a rattling timing chain tensioner could be causing the problem. Anyway, #2 is at the back of the engine. You will need to remove the intake manifold to get to it. It's a PITA and if you're like the rest of us, it won't fix the problem. Sorry I can't offer any useful advice :-( -Matt --- Robert Liu <bob_a_liu@yahoo.com> wrote: > Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2001 18:04:29 -0800 (PST) > From: Robert Liu <bob_a_liu@yahoo.com> > Subject: Code 1226 Knock Sensor #2 > > Today while driving home, the Check Engine light > comes > on as I'm driving into my garage. The wheel bearings in our M3's don't typically have any play in them, even when defective. When mine went bad it sounded like an old airplane. Your symptoms sound consistant with a bad bearing. Or it could be a bad tire maybe. If the tire looks okay then go for the bearing. It took me about 3h to R&R mine. Good Luck! -Matt --- twisty M3 <twistym3@hotmail.com> wrote: > Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 08:30:29 -0800 > From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> > Subject: [E36M3] Symptoms of Bad Wheel Bearings? > > Anyone care to give a list of symptoms associated > with bad wheel bearings? > Couldn't find anything on Ron Stygar's web page. > > I've got a '99 M3 (67K miles) with intermittent > stearing noise that has come > back (went away for a while, so I figured it was a > fluke). #10. HID nonsense - from Ed Tang
Top
Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 11:59:10 -0800 (PST) From: Ed Tang <etangf1@yahoo.com> Subject: HID nonsense It is scary that we share the road with people who don't realize that HID's aren't necessarily detrimental. Maybe it's their lack of focus on the road. Being in Chicago, it's not just the HID's. I don't know if it's the potholes that are throwing the alignment off whack on cars, but misaligned Halogens are dangerous too. I would say that a good 25% of the cars I come across in Chicago at night has a misaligned headlight. Or maybe the roads are so bad that softly sprung cars are blinding people. Most of the American cars I had always blew bulbs frequently. If I owned another American car I would probably take stock in a lightbulb company. Unfortunately you have to replace the whole lamp. I don't know how they are now-a-days, but your run-o-the-mill mid sized sedan and minivans/SUVS look like they still have the old (replace-the-whole-lamp) type bulbs. People are replacing their lamps without aligning the darn things. And guess what...they're just as distracting and dangerous as HID's. Should we get rid of all lighting on cars and force the sun to stay out? Move to Alaska. I have properly aimed my HID's and I've never had anyone flicker their high beams at me. Then again, I don't know if it really is distracting and they're just being polite (Haaa, in Chicago!!!). I think these people have more things to worry about than admiring HID's b/c they're eye-catching.
