#2. HK Stereo FM Problem - from Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net

Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 15:27:00 -0500 From: <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: HK Stereo FM Problem My car went off a small cliff....resulting in body damage that has now been repaired, but the stereo is acting up. The problem is limited to FM. Sometimes it is completely quiet, sometimes it works fine, and sometimes it "breaks up". I noticed that when going from completely fine to quiet the ST LED on the unit goes off. I left a message asking the dealer to advise me if they could diagnose the problem, as it should be covered under insurance as part of the same incident. Suggestions are appreciated! If anyone would like one looked up, let me know. I don't think you can buy the CDs anymore, you have to subscribe to the service.] Of course, the sub-frame debacle isn't listed either.... spm > -------------------- 8 -------------------- > Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 10:30:40 -0600 > From: "Michael Stembera" <m_stembera@yahoo.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] '95 Cam timing > > I friend of mine (who is a mechanic) just checked his cams and the > intake was pretty close but the exhaust cam was a good 10 to 15 degrees > off mark. #6. EWS II Failures? - from Sean Murphy
Top
Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 13:02:23 -0800 From: "Sean Murphy" <sean_murphy@tankhq.com> Subject: EWS II Failures? This happened to me a couple months ago, I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this. My '95 has 80k on the clock and has been relatively reliable (only the cooling system has let me down, but with new water pump, thermostat and radiator things are on the up and up) However one day I got into the car while running errands and the motor refused to turn over. All lights and dashboard systems came on and no faults were stored, but no starter. Starter didn't even click. I popped the hood, checked the fuses/relays (while attempting to look vaguely capable for female friend.. :) ) and didn't find anything. Got back in the car and it started right up. Whew. Weird, but whew. Unfortunately, the same thing happened later that evening and this time no amount of fiddling or prodding would produce combustible results. I spent several evenings a week for the next two riding my bike from my house to where the car was stuck, Bentely and tools in tow. I found a TSB on failures of the EWS (electronic immobilizer) and after detecting that neither the starter or fuel pump appear to activate I thought I was onto the problem. I checked the ring antenna, sender module and related parts but couldn't find any problems. After towing the car back home I really tore into the electronic guts and got to the main EWS module behind the glove box. I called around to see how I could get a new one. The only way a dealer would sell me one was to go to the dealer, with the registration in my name and order it. It then has to be coded by BMWNA and would arrive in god-knows-how-long. I live some 40 miles from the closer dealer. I mention to the service manager that the car doesn't start, hence the problem, hence the difficulty showing up in person. He was not swayed by my predicament. (an aside: the EWS module is coded for several things, including the keys issued to the car and the DME module installed by the factory. That's why each box has to be coded by BMWNA before they can ship it. If that's the case, what's the danger of selling EWS modules without the hassle. It's only going to work for that EXACT combination of key and DME module. ) At this point, this was a challenge I wanted to win mano a mano with the BMW gods. I returned to the Bentley, got deep into the wiring schematics and found which signals come from the ignition cylinder to the EWS box. I found that circuit did indeed close when the key was in START. I found the corresponding signal that comes out of the EWS and to the starter circuit (from which the fuel pump is operated) When I turn to START... nothing on that side. Out of curiousity I jumpered from the Ignition IN from the ignition cylinder to the starter circuit at the back of the EWS connector. I thought I might at least get the starter to turn. Vroom.. started right up. So I wonder, is this a common failure at all?? It sure is a PITA to have the damn anti-theft system leave you stone stranded. spm

Not necessarily, but the fact that LTWs dyno'ed so strong is a clear indication that everything was as it was intended in building those engines. Production variances are what cause different engines to be stronger/weaker. There are so many variables involved, it's really hard to nail those power figures down to one thing. -peterg (would love a fresh LTW motor to drop into my '95) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

Strong and weak motors can be found everywhere in the automotive world. Production variances account for the fact that some Heavyweight 95 M3s have about the same rear wheel hp as LTWs (assuming comparable mods). - -Matt The Bambislayer -----Original Message----- From: peter@guagenti.com [mailto:peter@guagenti.com] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 4:59 PM To: E36M3 Subject: Re: [E36M3] Improperly aligned cams on 95 M3s Production variances are what cause different engines to be stronger/weaker.
