Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 08:11:06 -0500 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: [E36M3] Finding and Fixing Interior Squeaks and Rattles Just thought I'd pass on a few tips on finding/fixing some interior sqeaks and rattles. Perhaps it's just the terrible Boston roads and cold weather causing all these to develop, but just in case you have some bugging you too, check this out: First, hit the hardware store and pick up a couple packs of the self-adhesive little felt cushions in various sizes that are used for protecting floors from chair and table legs. Pick a color that will blend into your interior if you'd like, but you're really not going to see them. Here's some of the squeaks and rattles that I found: 1) glove compartment door rattling - fix by adding a couple of felt pads on the inside of the door, where the rubber bumpers touch it. 2) split folding rear seat sqeaking over bumps - add the pads (thicker ones here) where the seat backs meet the rear deck-lid. You'll see the wear marks from all the rubbing. 3) this last one was the hardest to find - a rattling coming from the passenger door area around the B pillar that occurred on every expansion joint. It turns out that it wasn't the door at all, but the pull handle on the passenger seatback, which allows you to gain access to the rear seat on the coupes. This fix involved holding up the seatback release handle and inserting felt pads into the slot where it moves, on the bottom and side contact areas. Also, the seat belt attachments point at the B pillar was rattling in any position other than the bottom most, so I just left it there. The car is totally rattle and sqeak free now. Hope this helps some of you... -Colin '98 M3/2 36K (JC soft. and intake, X-brace, Euro rotors + R4s, clutch stop, redline...)

I usually line up the top one first, holding it steady with my hands, and lean on the mirror with my body. It should click in. Then do the same with the bottom two. No glue needed. It takes a bit of force, when mine popped off I lined them up and gave the mirror a smack (towards the body of the car) and it just snapped back in place. How it happened was kind of interesting though, on a road trip cruising down the highway in Montana, and a bird was flying towards the car. My buddy was driving at the time, swerved enough for the bird to miss the windshield but hit it with the drivers side mirror. Stop, pop the mirror back, keep on rollin! Jonathan, If it is a loud clicking noise, only when you turn, it could be your CV joint that is bad, usually due to a torn dust boot. Then again, this is based on my experience with other cars, and I could be completely off on this one.... To check, look behind the nuckell (Caliper/hub assembly area) at the axle and see if any of your dust boots are torn/missing/not connected. RAXLES (www.RAXLES.com) is a great place to get a replacement axle/half-shaft. Regards, Mike Morris ------------------------------------------------ From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Symptoms of Bad Wheel Bearings? I've got a '99 M3 (67K miles) with intermittent stearing noise that has come back (went away for a while, so I figured it was a fluke). Only happens when the wheels are turned to the right, and seems to be coming from the passenger side front.... #9. Interstate Battery #? - from peter@guagenti.com

Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 08:50:51 US/Pacific From: peter@guagenti.com Subject: Interstate Battery #? Anyone know the number for the interstate battery that is a replacement for the E36? I had been using a DieHard in my wife's 328i, and it has had a hard time keeping it's charge with her short commute. I replaced it with an Interstate, but I think it's the wrong size (it's smaller than the factory one in my M3). Either way, it doesn't want to keep a charge either. Any help is appreciated. -peterg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com
