Last winter I drove 3-5 times per week between Springfield, MA and Albany, NY. Many of these trips found some snow along the way. I use M-Contour's 7.5 with Michelin snow tires on all four corners. I had essentially no problems on the highway, and was driving through the Berkshires and don't recall any real issues on the side streets. My driveway whichs goes up a mountain is another matter, there were a few times my car stayed down near the beginning on the sections before the curves, as the ASC wasn't enough to make it up the hill. On really nasty days, I wouldn't make the drive, but stayed home, and ventured out in something with 4wd. I bought a set of wheels from Ronal, they had a bunch of different styles that would fit. I have the 205/55/16s and went with Hakka 1s. They are quiet, studable (real snow tires are ;) ), and are amazing on snow/ice/slush etc. Was able to get around fine even during the large snow storms we had here in Boston (metrowest actually) (anybody remember last March? with 33"+ of snow?) and several trips back to Northern NY state (ok canada for those that think as far north as you can get is Albany). -Justin -- '76 02 (Whimsical) (sleeping for the winter) '97 M3 (Orion) (with hakka 1s) BMW CCA#77056 check out http://users.vei.net/jgerry

I ended up changing one bulb at a time and driving around to observe the difference between the beam patterns. After 1.5 hours of comparing the two in an empty un-lit parking lot and against a brick wall (yes, I'm anal), I concluded the beam patterns were so similar, I couldn't really tell the difference. The "upgraded" side did appear significantly brighter near the center and less yellow, but not any darker near the sides. I believe the bulbs are rated independently of their housings, so 1700 lumens should be greater than 1000 lumens, but I don't think it's 70% more - maybe 25%. I'd guess the extra light comes from the bulb design and the increase power dissipation. Anyways, I'm carrying the original 9006s in my trunk just in case I want to change back. Thanks, Colin '98 M3

Ice, snow, salt; the northeast in all its winter glory. I emerged unscathed with a set of Blizzaks from the tire rack. I could out-brake, out-turn, and out-accelerate my wife's SUV with all season tires. The only drawback (besides being incredibly squirmy on dry pavement) was that they wear out fast. Two winters then chuck 'em. I recommend 16's in the narrowest width the Rack recommends. Every little bit of extra traction helps in the white stuff. Incidentally I've always removed the stock bushing from its carrier by drilling away some of the rubber, then using an air chisel to mangle out the outer bearing sleeve. It's crude and ugly but it works. For anyone else contemplating this job, especially if you don't have air tools, I'd strongly consider having the old bushings pressed out and the new pressed in by the dealer or at an automotive machine shop. If you don't have another car to drive you can buy an extra set of bushing carriers for under $50 the pair, and even sell the old ones to somebody else doing the same procedure. <snip> > My next steps are > a) pressing the new bushings into their housing. > QUESTION :What do you guys recommend ? I have a table > vise setup and I plan to use the vise to press the > bushings into the housing. Put the bushing carrier on a concrete floor, lube the new bushing OD and position it on the carrier. Place a wood block on top and using an engineer's heavy hammer (3-4+ lb head) tap the block to get the bushing started. You may have to start over if it wants to go in cocked. You can then try the vise to continue insertion, or else carefully use the hammer and block. > b) Bolting-on the housing and "porking" the bushing > hole with the lower arm. Wire brush the journal on the control arm to make sure it's as clean and smooth as possible. Some control arms have more of a lead machined on the end to ease starting the bushing, others are very square and hard to start. You can use a file to improve the lead. Lube the bushing ID and push/twist into place. It will take quite a bit of effort. Your hammer/socket method may be necessary, but remember that the shock load is going into the inboard ball joint, so don't hammer any harder or more than you have to. (I'm assuming the control arms are still on the car.) Of course there's a special BMW tool to do this right... > As I will explain on the install procedure later on, > this R&R is all about secret tips, that save hours of > pain and suffering. I am moving to a smaller place and parking will be an issue for more than one car. Hence my 98 must go. Its currently on ebay at : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=598940800 I got it appriaised by a local deaer who offered $25K for this car. In short, if I have to give it away, I'd rather give it to an enthusiast than a dealer for that price. Hence the rock bottom I will take is $25K which is a STEAL for this car. Since the Powerflex bushing operates in a different manner (my theory), it may not be quite so hard to press onto the control arm. I am guessing that since the bushing is so much stiffer than normal OEM bushings, the control arm will rotate in the bushing, where the OEM bushings actually grab the control arm, and the rubber flexes. The stiffness should make the urethane bushing control the arm better, but I wonder how long they will last. Will be interesting to see. I have my Powerflex trailing arm bushings, and new steering rack, and will update the group when they make it onto the car. Hopefully over the Christmas holiday. Good luck with your install, Butch
