Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 18:35:12 -0800 (PST) From: Joe Tan <mailjtan@yahoo.com> Subject: Check Engine light My 'Check Engine' light came on on my way home from work tonight. So, I need to find out what is the problem. Is there a way that I can read a fault code on my own? If so what is the procedure? I've heard that you can't read the fault code without special equipments on the late model of Motronic, Is that true? Thanks for the help, Joe T. Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 03:03:00 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Front strut bearing question Bob, It's advisable to replace the upper strut bearings when replacing struts, especially if the original equipment struts have lots of miles on them. Since you need to disassemble the strut to replace the damper, it's the best time to replace the bearing. Think of the extra work (or $$ for labor) to go in just to replace the bearings in a year or so? Especially if you're putting Bilsteins in your car, since they tend to last nearly forever! The bearings DO move alot. Every time you turn the steering wheel, the strut rotates about it's vertical axis, inside the bearing. Also, vertical impacts apply a force to the bearings every time you hit a bump. Bottom line: those bearings see alot of use, and it's a great time to replace them. By the way, BMW made an (fixed) offset strut bearing for the E30, which was supposed to correct camber 'problems'. I could never understand how a fixed offset could correct all camber problems, but it DID add an additional 0.5 degree of camber (negative or positive, depending on how you installed the bearing). I don't know if it'll fit an E36, but perhaps someone on the list has already checked? -rb >Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 17:31:57 -0800 >From: "Bob Lenarcik" <lenarcik@pacbell.net> >Subject: Front strut bearing question > >I am in the middle of replacing the front struts and I noticed that the >strut bearings don't look all that great. Mine's a little less than 2" from the #6 exhaust port, upstream of the turbo. Cruising at a steady 70 mph, I see around 1150 F. At a steady 85 it's a little under 1300. I imagine my exhaust system has more back pressure than stock. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> To: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Monday, December 10, 2001 7:48 PM Subject: [E36M3] EGT Gauge > Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 21:51:11 -0500 > From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> > Subject: EGT Gauge > > Does anybody happen to know what an EGT gauge on our cars should read in a > 'normal', or stoichiometric condition? > > --------------------------------------------------------- > Paul Elliott > '99 White M3; < 40K miles; Dinan stage II SC kit with 6" RMS crank pulley: > 11 psi; AA Water Injection; Rotex pads;X-Brace; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; > Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio > > > ************************************************************* > List Commands > UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. > DIR - sends a listing of files available in the list's GET directory. > GET filename1.ext,filename2.ext - sends the requested file(s). > > To issue a command/request to the server: > Send a message with the command you wish executed as the > subject of the message to the email address e36m3@bmw-m.net. > ************************************************************* > >

It looks like the unanimous reply is to use a Peake Research Tool to read the fault code. I will be ordering one tomorrow. Anyone in the bay area have one and would be kind enough to let me use until I get mine:)? I guess my other question is it safe drive my car while I have the check engine light on? Will I make the problem worst by driving the car? Joe T. '98 M3/4 --- Joe Tan <mailjtan@yahoo.com> wrote: > My 'Check Engine' light came on on my way home from > work tonight. I was afraid of that - and I just got everything ready to bolt into the car. The original struts were pretty shot (79k miles) and after looking at the bearings, I was hoping that I can get some more miles from them. I figured I would eventually end up with fully adjustable KMACs or the TMS Camber plates - for the price difference over stock replacements, I might as well do it now. - Bob -----Original Message----- From: Ron Buchalski [mailto:rbuchals@hotmail.com] Sent: Monday, December 10, 2001 7:03 PM To: lenarcik@pacbell.net Cc: e36m3@bmw-m.net Subject: Re: Front strut bearing question Bob, It's advisable to replace the upper strut bearings when replacing struts, especially if the original equipment struts have lots of miles on them. #10. cold start squeak - from Zack Steinkamp

Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 09:03:34 -0800 (PST) From: Zack Steinkamp <edsarkiss@yahoo.com> Subject: cold start squeak hi listmembers as the weather has been getting colder here, i've noticed a little squeak when starting my 98 sedan. i could try to describe it, but there's no substitute for hearing it: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/edsarkiss/lst?.dir=/m3 click on "m3_squeak" to hear the sound. i mounted two mics (stereo) under the car, on either side of the motor. what you hear in the right speaker would be emanating from the driver's side of the car. the sound only lasts for a couple of seconds, and only when i blip the throttle. in this case, i started the car, did several blips up to 2000 RPM until the sound disappeared, at which point i shut the motor off. starting it once the motor/weather is warm is squeak-free. any ideas are very much appreciated! zs 98 M3/4 - sharked, intaked, braced, coiled-over, and squeaking :-( __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
