A 17mm 6 point socket will take it off. Might need a breaker bar to remove them. Remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug. Also, there is a new drain plug available originally for Getrag trannies that work with our ZF trannies too (or is it the other way around?) When you screw in the OE plugs for a few threads, you can wiggle them around.....quite some play. With the OE plugs, I noticed drops of tranny fluid forming on the drain plug after torquing to specs. The new plug is tighter fitting and seals better. #3. [E36M3] How to upgrade 8 button OBC to 16 button on 99 M3? - from Michael Strauss

I recently got a 1999 M3 and it had the simpler 8 button OBC in it (Temp, C/F, Set/Res, Check, etc.) For some reason I like gadgets... I came across a very cheap 16 button OBC (the one with Trip, Dist, etc.) and would like to install it. The car is currently missing the white cable needed for this computer. Is there a kit you can buy to upgrade to the more advanced OBC? Thanks, Mike S.

#4. Height Diffs with H&Rs and Bilsteins - from The Buch
Top
Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2001 21:42:42 -0800 From: The Buch <the_buch@telus.net> Subject: Height Diffs with H&Rs and Bilsteins I am advised by Turner that using the H&R OE springs with the high pressure of matched Bilsteins will actually raise the M3 by about 0.5" on all corners. What is the group experience in terms of actual height gained/lost with either the H&R OEs or H&R Sports in combo with the Bilsteins? Any recommendations for minimal sacrifice on streetability with modest improvement in performance stiffness?

#5. FS: E36 M3 PF-Z brake pads, almost brand new - from Vernon Anderson

Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2001 01:03:34 -0500 From: "Vernon Anderson" <vanderson@cerebellumsoft.com> Subject: FS: E36 M3 PF-Z brake pads, almost brand new I have a full F/R set of Performance Friction Z-rated brake pads for sale for an E36 M3. They only have about 500 miles on them, no autocross or track events, only street driving. Almost brand new. I was going to use them on the same rotors in combination with PF-90 pads, using the Z's for street/autocross and the 90's for track. However, right after I bought and installed them, I decided to go ahead and use a separate set of rotors for the 90's and run the OEM Jurid's for street/autox. The Z's have been sitting for over a year and I have no plans to use them. New, a full set is about $200, the first $100 plus actual shipping takes these. It's totally different and requires hand wiring and, IIRC, some re-programming to make it work. It's highly not recommended. -Matt, who is also stuck with the 8-button OBC.. --- Michael Strauss <mstrauss@nc.prestige.net> wrote: > Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2001 22:41:27 -0500 > From: "Michael Strauss" <mstrauss@nc.prestige.net> > Subject: [E36M3] How to upgrade 8 button OBC to 16 > button on 99 M3? > > I recently got a 1999 M3 and it had the simpler 8 > button OBC in it > (Temp, C/F, Set/Res, Check, etc.) For some reason I > like gadgets... Get a 14mm (or 1/2"--.55"=14mm) head bolt, about 2" long. Take two nuts and double lock them against each other on the shaft of the bolt. Use the bolt head to sit into the diff plug and use a wrench on the inner bolt to remove the plug. Works like a charm, although a bit ghetto! But it works, and it is free if you have a few correct nuts and a bolt lying around. Thank me later for saving you $20.
