As I passed the police car, I saw that he was starting up his car and preparing to pull me over. I pulled the V1 off the window and hid it under the seat. The officer told me that he pulled me over because he clocked me doing 86 in a 65 zone. I replied "Eight-six!" He took my license and registration, went away for a few minutes, and came back...WITH A WARNING!!! I'm sure that it would have been a ticket if he saw a detector on the window. The other possibility is that he was trolling for DWI, which is a REAL reason to issue a ticket. -rb >Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 06:15:27 -0800 (PST) >From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] Speeding Tickets > >You're joking right? #3. Introduction and Questions - from Steve Klein

Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 14:19:53 -0600 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Introduction and Questions Hello, Everyone- My name is Steve Klein, and I live in Kansas City, MO and have been the fortunate owner of a well loved '95 M3 for about five months now. My first. I've been following this list for the past month or so, and I'm delighted to have found such a valuable resource. If I may, I have a few general questions about the car and some minor issues as I get to know it: First, I'm 6'7" and there are two points about the interior that I find slightly less than accommodating. The lower wings on the seat are great, but the right side hits me just on the underside of the thigh, which proves uncomfortable on long treks. Is the structure of the wing something that can be either modified (shortened or flattened outward towards the parking brake) or removed? Along the same line, the steering wheel is fixed, but the manual mentions either a tilting or telescoping wheel column. Is this something I can adopt? Between this and the seat, the interior would then become completely zen for me. Third, about the OBC, What is the 'Memo' button for? If I have the icon lit, I will periodically hear three chimes from the dash, but I've found no mention of it in the manual. Fourth: The dealer invoice lists 'Motorsport Tuned Suspension.' Am I safe in assuming this is their name for the 'stock' suspension in M vehicles? Fifth, and last for now: The driver side door does not sound as solid upon closing as the passenger side, and when opening from the outside, a small amount of upward pressure on the handle is necessary to get the latch to release. Is this an alignment problem with the door or latch, and how would one set about correcting this? Oh, one last: Is there anyone who might make shorter mounting stalks for the rear-view mirror on the windshield? Again, a height issue. It currently blocks out a significant portion of road (esp. intersections) and having it up an inch or two would greatly improve my scanning. Thank you in advance for any input or advice you might have. Steve

Clark" <toclark@cisco.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Speeding Tickets A TV station in Minneapolis recently sent questionnaires to every highway patrol officer in the state. About 75% answered the survey, which dealt with the individual officers beliefs in writing speeding tickets. Amazingly, about 50% said they would generally not write a ticket if you didn't give them an attitude problem and promised to slow down. When asked about stopping a car with an obvious radar detector, 98% of the responding officers said it would earn you an instant ticket. Just another data point... The thinking then is so you can turn on your radio to hear the news, which often occur at the top of every hour both in europe and on this side of the pond. > Oh, one last: Is there anyone who might make shorter mounting stalks > for the rear-view mirror on the windshield? The luxury package seat (also known as the "sport package seat" in non-M's) has a much wider base. You can sell yours and buy replacements for less. In fact, there's a lux-package interior on eBay right now. > Along the same line, the steering wheel is fixed, but the manual > mentions either a tilting or telescoping wheel column. Is this something > I can adopt? Between this and the seat, the interior would then become > completely zen for me. The steering wheel _was_ adjustable, and there was a recall that eliminated it. Seems that drivers who didn't wear their seatbelts could hurt their legs. Some smart owners (like the former owner of my '95) did not bring it in for the recall. I know _I_ wear my seatbelt all the time. You can re-install the parts. The list is on Unofficialbmw.com if I remember correctly. > Third, about the OBC, What is the 'Memo' button for? Stock suspension for M-cars. > Fifth, and last for now: The driver side door does not sound as > solid upon closing as the passenger side, and when opening from the > outside, a small amount of upward pressure on the handle is necessary to > get the latch to release. Is this an alignment problem with the door or > latch, and how would one set about correcting this? Okay, this is one I currently have a problem with. At first I thought it was a window alignment issue (as there is no difficulty opening the door if the window is down), but I had the window re-aligned and it didn't fix it. My current hypothesis is that it has to do with a faulty window regulator/motor and too much freeplay in the up/down alignment. I think that the auto-up puts the window up too high and puts undue tension on the door. Notice that you can push the door in a bit and the handle is easy? I'm gonna replace my motor and regulator and see if that solves it. > Oh, one last: Is there anyone who might make shorter mounting stalks > for the rear-view mirror on the windshield? Again, a height issue. It > currently blocks out a significant portion of road (esp. intersections) > and having it up an inch or two would greatly improve my scanning. I don't have the link handy, but someone made an adapter for the BMW mirror mount to accept a wide selection of GM mirrors. They did it for the Z3, but it works on our cars too. There really isn't a BMW-option, as all of their mirrors are excessively large and poorly shaped. > Thank you in advance for any input or advice you might have. You're welcome. No real help here, but do you have the sport seats (vaders, manually adjustable) or the luxury seats (ie, they're power seats, your car has the grille cross bar on the front, no motorsport stripes on the seats, you have wood trim inside the car)? > Along the same line, the steering wheel is fixed, but the manual > mentions either a tilting or telescoping wheel column. Is this something > I can adopt? Between this and the seat, the interior would then become > completely zen for me. I think it's quite a bit of work, and you should have different part numbers for your 95 than Jim had for his 98 4 door (although maybe not?).. Jim Powell's tilt wheel retrofit: http://www.apexcone.com/tiltwheel/tiltwheel.htm > Third, about the OBC, What is the 'Memo' button for? If I have the > icon lit, I will periodically hear three chimes from the dash, but I've > found no mention of it in the manual. I just read another lister's comment about this. Wow, you learn something new every day. I do have an OBC question for the list now, though.. it's been bothering me for some time. How do you reset the "timer" function? I can start and stop it, and turn it on and off, but I can't get it to reset to zero. I've done it once or twice since I've owned the car, but it was always though some obscure sequence of button presses that I subsequently forget. Oh yeah, and why does the car only SOMETIMES chime when it flashes the temp for being below 38 degrees? Does it only do it when the car is already running? I think when I start the car and it's below 38, the temp still flashes for ice warning, but no chime.. - reid

Is > the structure of the wing something that can be either modified > (shortened or flattened outward towards the parking brake) or removed? Not without major surgery. In other words, it would be cheaper to buy another seat that fits you better. I'm also not a big fan of '95 M3 manual "Darth Vader" seats. They look cool, but the side bolster become uncomfortable over long distance drives _and_ the head rest is totally useless as it can not be tilted forward to support the head. If you tilt the set back far enough forward to support the head than your upper body is way too close to the airbag infest steering wheel. In this respect the heavier and less supportive automatic seats are actually more comfortable and usable over the long haul. > Along the same line, the steering wheel is fixed, but the manual > mentions either a tilting or telescoping wheel column. Is this something > I can adopt? Between this and the seat, the interior would then become > completely zen for me. Tilting steering wheel came standard on '94 production cars but was eliminated from 01/95. You can retrofit the tilting mechanism. I remember seeing the how-to instructions on http://www.unofficialbmw.com but I can not find them right now. > Third, about the OBC, What is the 'Memo' button for? If I have the > icon lit, I will periodically hear three chimes from the dash, but I've > found no mention of it in the manual. The 'memo' sets the OBC to chime 15 seconds before an hour to wake you up for the hourly news broadcasts. The OBC will also beep when the ambient temperature drops below 36/37F to alert you of the freezing road conditions; if you exceed the set manually speed limit; something else I'm forgetting > Fourth: The dealer invoice lists 'Motorsport Tuned Suspension.' Have an independent wrench do all of the above if it doesn't ring any bells. > Oh, one last: Is there anyone who might make shorter mounting stalks > for the rear-view mirror on the windshield? If you think this is bad, try sitting in a Z3! Nope, there is not much you can do about the mirror mount, other than dropping by the dealer lot and checking out the mirrors on the newer cars. Perhaps, though unlikely, one of them has a shorter mirror that will fit you better and costs less than an arm and a leg. hope this helps, alex f '95 M3

Thank you to all who have responded thus far, and thank you for your hearty welcomes to the list! They are indeed the ///M Darth Vader manual seats, and otherwise very comfortable. Having said that, I'll have to look into the replacement options. I'll also have to try the door with the window down. It seems more like a strike plate misalignment, but empiricism will tell. Again, thanks to all for responding. The help is greatly appreciated, and once I get my bike rebuilt, I'm sure I'll have more questions for you as to how best improve the 'Street Queen (is that the right term?)' prowess. I've had my eye on the Dinan super charger package since day two, but I'm sure I'll prepare the suspension to handle it first. Thank you again, and have a good day! Steve
