Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2001 14:29:39 +0000 From: bmwm3nut@att.net Subject: cracked front subframe Hey all, well after reading some of the olf digest on the subframe, I went out and checked mine as I was changing to my new track wheels/tires (SSR comp.) Well, my right front motor mount subframe hole has 3 crackes radiating from the nut. Looks pretty terminal for this subframe. I have a friend who swaped a S50 engine into a 318 body and he said the 318 subframe is the same as the M3s. Does anyone know if a 325/328/318 subframe is the same as our S50 m3s? Are they interchangeable? I dont believe it does it on a hard pull in first gear, say...Its much more likely to occur if Im in a higher gear, and lugging slightly between 2k and 2.5k rpms... It almost sounds like soft pinging, except I dont understand why it would be pinging at this range..Ive usually associated pinging or detonation with the application of alot of boost in a forced induction application, where you are leaning out the mix excessively. I realize that also, knock can be caused by lugging the engine. But 2000 rpms isnt necessarily so low that youre lugging it. Could this be pinging we are hearing? If so, whats the fix? In my case, although Im using 11 psi boost with my SC, its protected by water injection, and more importantly, at this rpm level, there is zero boost being made, so I dont see how that could be a factor. My car is due for an Inspection II in a few hundred miles...I think Im going to have them put in the '95 M3 plugs instead of my current ones, as they are 1 heat range colder. --------------------------------------------------------- Paul Elliott '99 White M3; < 40K miles; Dinan stage II SC kit with 6" RMS crank pulley: 11 psi; AA Water Injection; Rotex pads;X-Brace; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio

Screw the EPA, like they care if my car runs right or not? There is a place by me that saves automobiles by retuning exhaust. And yes, they replace cats with whatever you want. My buddy has a custom straight pipe on his eclipse with a shell of a cat around the pipe. Would you believe he passed visual inspection. Of course we would. I also know places that will help him pass state inspection for a case of beer and $20. Not enough to feel very much but possibly enough to require more fuel or less timing. It's hard to say since your dyno run didn't really start that low. There's not much that you can do to fix the problem except go back to the other pully or change the ignition or fuel maps. Or stay off full throttle when its pinging. -Matt --- Paul Elliott <pelliott@rcn.com> wrote: > Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2001 09:43:09 -0500 > From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> > Subject: catalytic converter - resonator > > James, > > >>my car makes a metallic screechy sound when going > past about > 2k rpm either direction.. im pretty sure its my > cat<< > > Mine makes a similar sound...Let me ask you more > about it, or tell you > about mine, in an effort to understand what it > is...Mine occurs only when > I'm lugging the engine a little, and only below 2500 > rpms. Check the Service & Warranty Manual - the emissions warranty is for 8 years/80,000 miles. The cat is part of the emissions equipment and thus covered under this longer warranty period. No, it actually waits a while for the coolant to warm up, then increases fan speed to get quick heating once that becomes possible. It not being A/C season here in the Midwest, I can't check and don't recall what is does in cooling mode. > I like having total control <g>. When I turn the fan on LOW, I want it > on LOW. Sometimes a computer doesn't know what I want. It's actually easy to override.
