I used one to light the shifter knob, and I used the other to provide dimmable power to my gauges. RUF seems to think that they still need to put exhaust catalysts on their 212mph Porsches. Imagine that! As far as the European Car series, I think they did a great disservice to their readers by not explicitly stating that the exhaust mods make the vehicle illegal to use on public roads in many parts of the US. Especially considering that the car resides in California, the land of exhaust sniffing Nazis. The SS system (headers, resonator, exhaust) costs over $2k (not including installation). That's alot of money to pay if you aren't fully aware of the legal ramifications of installing it. -rb (MD, home of technically incompetent emissions inspectors) >Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2001 09:41:05 EST >From: HYPERM3@aol.com >Subject: Re: [E36M3] catalytic converter - resonator > > ><<I'll call my friends at the EPA and they will lead the >shop owner off in hand cuffs within 2 hours.>> > >Go huff your tailpipe. In other words, they're heated mirrors that actually heat up enough to do the job. I replaced the 'heated' driver's side mirror on my E34 525iT with the heated Euro wide angle mirror. (The outer edge has an even wider angle view...I can now see across two lanes!). Anyhow, the driver's mirror gets HOT, unlike the US mirror, which gets slightly warm. In damp weather, the passenger-side mirror has water drops sitting on it. The driver's side mirror is warm enough to dry the water drops and keep vision clear. I'm going to swap the passenger side mirror on the E34... -rb >Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2001 14:20:05 -0600 >From: "The Abels" <aAbel@austin.rr.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] euro mirror glass > >For OE, that's about as good as you can do. #4. RE: [E36M3] catalytic converter - resonator - from Seth Thomas

Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 11:45:30 -0500 From: "Seth Thomas" <porsche993@mindspring.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] catalytic converter - resonator Correct me if I am wrong on this but does Ruf not have to put catalysts on their cars according to European regulations? I thought this was so since they are considered a manufacturer and not just an aftermarket company. One thing to point out in this thread that I noticed was that the statement Alex quoted (read below) sounded to me like an attack at the morals of whoever would even consider taking the cats off a street car. To me it was uncalled for in this discussion of the resonator sold by SS. Yes the kit is illegal for street use, SS states that, and that should be the end of discussion. Nobody in this forum wants to hear about why something is legal and what should happen to the people that do this illegal act, especially just b/c you worked for the EPA and know people. We are all adults and know the ramifications of our actions. If people did want to hear this type of debate then lets all start talking about gun-control. So if this is going to be a discussion of moral issues here then lets keep it private and not bring the rest of the list in on it. But we can all benefit from the experience of those who are running cat-less exhausts. I for one am on my LTW and I am also running high-flow cats from Random Technologies on my E30 M3 w/E36 M3 power. The LTW is my track car but it does get driven on the street. It does have a Euro motor in it with a full Gruppe N exhaust system. I like the car without the cats. On this motor I think they would rob the power from it and since it is a track car I want all the power I can have. Now on my E30 with the RT cats, I also like those. Could a difference be told when they were installed on the car. Yes it could. They were installed by the previous owner before I bought the car but I did get to drive the car before and after. Yes it makes a difference in the upper RPM feel of the motor. It opened up the higher revs and the car did pull stronger. How much HP did this add? I don't know as I only have a butt dyno at my house (one day I will have a dyno though...). But I think they are worth it if you do have to replace you cats and want to stay legal or live in Ca. They do make a difference on our cars and they will still pass emissions. My car passed in Atl. But if you want to go ultimate and illegal then get the SS center piece. Either way you will like either product. #6. [E36M3] 8.5 x 4 = Good! - from twisty M3

Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 11:56:18 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] 8.5 x 4 = Good! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to me! (same to all of you as well.) ;) I finally met up with someone in Santa Monica who was willing to do a wheel swap with me, so I now have the 8.5" Contours with 245/40-17s on all four corners. WOW!!!! I can believe one extra inch can make such a drastic change in the feel of a car. Turn in is great and I hit a few of my favorite twisties over the last few days (even in the rain, thanks to the S03s), and just couldn't believe the difference. The M3s really should've come this way from the factory. Long sweepers feel better, and I even purposely went into some sharp hair pins carrying a bit of extra speed too see if I could induce some understeer... None! The car was easy to just rotate and come out of the turn with now drama. It really feels like a different car in some situations. Decreasing radius turns with a bit of throttle lift feel really nice. God I love this car! ;) Oh, and there seems to be no rubbing of any sort coming from the front tires, and they look pretty cool with the wide tires/deep rims. ;) I also had my old reinforcement plates reinstalled w/the TC Kline Camber/Castor plates to prevent further dimpling of my shock towers, and that seems to have made the front end feel less harsh over rough roads. May have to do with the Koni bumpstops that were used to replace my old cut factory bumpstops. Aside from some lighter wheels and about 100-200 more horsepower, I think I've got myself the perfect street car. For anyone interested, this is the current rundown in order that I've gotten things, and I think I'm done (except for a seperate set of track wheels some time this year): X-brace, UUC Comp/Evo shortshift, RD Sport Sway bars (med front, stiff rear), Fischer stainless steal brake lines, ECIS CAI, Shark Injected, Frozen Rotors front and rear (Euro in front), TC Kline Trackline suspension (Koni S/A, H&R Sports), TC Kline Camber/Castor plates w/reinforcement plates, UUC TM & TME, Redline fluids in Tranny and diff, Porterfield R4S pads for street and R4 for track, clear turn signals (just to shut my friends up about how ugly they thought the amber lenses were... which never bothered me.) ;) I think that's everything. The allignment seems perfect... The front is set at -2.0° camber, 7° castor with the rear set at about -1.7° camber. I can't recall exact toe measurements, but have them at home for anyone who wants them. Thus far, even with the semi-aggressive settings, I get even tire wear which surprises me... Plus, now I can stretch out tire life by rotating. ;) And all of this is just a bit more exciting to me than my New Years Eve plans. I hope all of you have a happy and safe one.
