I think http://www.bimmerparts.com/ had a light for $40 each (their website now shows $72 for a set) and they come with the plastic brackets... I think I even have a few extra brackets because I changed the fogs out and didn't have a use for the brackets... Chester > "catch" that the mounting bracket hooks to was broken. Mark responds with > ... you should never have to replace the springs...They should last well over 100,000 miles before any notion of replacement. I will go one step further and say you should never have to replace your springs (unless you are trying to change the rate) if they are not damaged (too rusty, cut, stress fractures, etc.) or they are not compatible with your dampers. The amount of fatigue has to be nearly immaterial under normal use and they should last over 1,000,000 miles. Any metallurgists care to comment? Best regards, 95 M3 - stock springs but only 27,000 miles currently (95 Euro springs sitting in a corner right now though) 89 325is - M3 springs and pushing 132,000 miles :-)

Are there any components on this vehicle that are prone to failure outside of the original manufacturers warranty?? Right now, I'm looking at the extended 7yr/100,000 from Warranty Gold.

Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 11:20:41 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: RE: Various spring threads Chester says > > Good 'ol UUC. Apparently one of the part numbers on > the site listed for springs is a part number for a > strut...be glad you didn't order that! The part number Chester is referring to is the front spring listed for the "US 95 M3" (part number 31 31 2 226 987) which is actually the strut. The actual part number should be either 31 33 2 227 421 (without a/c) or 31 33 2 227 422 (with a/c). Additionally, the part number for rear spring listed for the "US 95 M3" (part number 33 52 2 227 794) is actually the damper and should be 33 53 9 064 881. This is for 1995 M3s (+1996 M3s are different as Chester posted). I have often wondered if the part numbers for the 1995 LTWs (which came to the US) used the 31 33 2 227 421 spring in the front but I have yet to see this confirmed by anyone (Michael Lawrence, can you confirm this). If this was the case, the 421 has a smaller wire diameter and is 0.25" longer than the 422 but probably has a slightly lower static ride height equipped on the same car. In general, BMW springs come in series with consecutive numbers that cover a range of loads, higher number for heavier cars. Lower numbered springs are typically shorter and the higher numbers are typically longer (unless the wire diameter changes like in the LTW example I have speculated on above). Spring rates are typically very similar within a series I would imagine since the number of coils stays the same and the wire diameter does not change (or very little). The length will generally just affect the static ride height. I assume BMW does this so vehicles across a model line have the same static ride height (I presume to facilitate suspension set-up and alignment specs). So, within the series Chester mentioned, length would be roughly as follows (assuming the wire diameter does not change): 31 33 2 228 170 - shorter (assuming same wire diameter, # of coils, id., etc.) 31 33 2 228 171 - 12.75" per UUC Motorwerks (courtesy of Ben Liaw IIRC) 31 33 2 228 172 - longer (assuming same wire diameter, # of coils, id., etc.) I can talk more specifics related to E30 springs (M3 and 325) due to a problem I encountered on Ebay and through much investigative work with Brett Anderson and Gary Derian. Gary Derian has confirmed much of what I have said above related to his work on his E34 M5 as well. If anyone cares to comment further or correct anything I have said, please let me know. I am making a lot of assumptions. Best regards, Rich 95 M3 - stock springs (95 Euro springs, with a/c, sitting in a corner right now though) 89 325is - M3 springs

I had a strip of retread appear in front of me on Wednesday morning (from under the SUV in front of me). Had traffic on the right and a guard rail on the right, so I really had no chance to move at all. Left side foglamp was gone, right hanging by connector with mounts broken, and the airdam was cracked in 2 places below the mesh grille. Mostly it was the black plastic piece on the bottom that held all the pieces together. I just put most of it back together with sheet metal screws and I'm probably going to leave it without foglamps until spring. It does look kinda funny tho. Does anybody have an idea of how much it would cost to replace the airdam? It does look > kinda funny tho. After replacing 3 (yes, I said 3 -- auto-x really kills 'em) broken fog lights on my '95 after only 2 years of ownership, I decided to not use them at all anymore. I pulled the wires up and tie-wrapped them to the headlight wiring to keep them out of the wet. I then plugged the fog light holes with the covers from the 318 (about $40?). Painted them a nice metallic silver (to match my painted kidneys, and the wire- mesh grille that replaced my retread-broken lower grille). They look great in contrast to the Cosmos Black of the car. > Does anybody have an idea of how much it would cost to replace the airdam? $500 for the complete bumper assembly, sans black lower splitter. I bought one used for my wife's 328 and paid $200 for it. Got a nice RDSport LTW-style splitter for it for another $100 (instead of the simple black plastic). Gotta love eBay. -peterg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com
