It was the cooler piece (that looks like a trombone in front of the cross-member) where the metal connected to the rubber hose. The dealer had it in stock and replaced it under warranty in under 1 hour on Tuesday morning. They had to clean up the mess from the initial burst only to fill it and pressurize the system to see where the leak was and make another big mess. The tech said that he has seen this failure before too. -Wayne '99 M3/2

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! Chris, Sure you can do it yourself! Most of us got involved in this kind of thing through some combination of desire, necessity or economics. Welcome to the club! Suspension work is mostly straight bolt-on, and doesn't need any special BMW tools. You will need spring compressors for the front struts. Having air tools isn't essential, but is really helpful since some of the fasteners can be hard to get off by hand. Dinan uses Koni inserts, but I don't know whether they supply then already installed into cut-down stock strut casings on not. If they aren't pre-installed, you'll need to do the cut-and-gut routine on your original struts. I can e-mail you a full write-up on that. Get a Bentley manual for guidance and as reference for tightening torque values. Be aware that Bentley over-complicates some procedures. (Example: there's absolutely no need to drop the rear halfshafts to change the springs. Just release the lower shock mount and have a friend stand on the hub to force the suspension down. Trust me, that's how everyone does it.) Because two heads are better than one, it helps to have the help of a friend, even if they know nothing about BMWs. Schedule a weekend for the job, take your time, and make sure you've booked an alignment for immediately afterwards. BTW, I change my suspension between stock and lowered Koni/H&R with the seasons, so am very familiar with what you plan. It takes me a morning to do the whole thing. Because yours is a 95 and probably has some miles, you should consider whether any other parts need to be changed while you're at it. Front control arm bushings and especially rear trailing arm bushings come to mind. Have fun! Neil 96 M3
