Your attitude is a breath of fresh air! I get so tired of people blaming their car, as if it threw itself off the road out of spite. No need to beat you up since you've already taken responsibility. #3. Sachs HD Clutch Requirements? - from Matt Henson

Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 13:48:38 -0800 (PST) From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> Subject: Sachs HD Clutch Requirements? Hey Gang, I'm going to be replacing the clutch in my '95 M3 Turbo soon. The obvious choice is to go with the Sachs HD Pressure Plate. Does anyone here have the skinny on this? I understand that I can get the PP and other parts from bimmerparts.com. I'm not planning on replacing the factory flywheel at this time. So can I just use the stock disk, fork and release bearing? Just bolt in new stock parts and the PP and it will all work? I searched the archives and Josh suggested that it's necessary to use a 5mm longer release bearing with the HD Pressure Plate. Can anyone confirm this? I'll call bimmerparts.com but I wanted to get feedback from the list first. Regards, Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! You said it, lmao, just kidding. Everybody makes mistakes, just look at how many road cars the F1 drivers destroy and they are supposedly the best. good thing you werent hurt and sounds as the lesson was learned. now to the car, Check the steering rack and maybe go ahead and change the tie rod ends, sure they took a beating in that. You might have to take the front hub off to remove the broken ball joint, cant tell from the pic but it looks like it seperated? The fender unbolts, no welding involved there, I would also measure the strut tower to check for any movement. A body shop or any shop with a repair manual should have the specs for measuring the tower, there are many, many places to measure to see if it is still in 'Spec' I am sure it is but check it. also look at the strut housing very closely, they tend to bend easy on most wrecked cars I have seen. I have seen many, many wrecked E-36s that were rebuilt and it always seems to be just the lower control arm that bends, plus tie rods on the steering rack. Also check around, your bumper cover might be repairable, cant tell from the pics, but find a used one if not. Overall you are looking at a faily inexpensive repair vs letting a shop do it. Good luck Mike

#5. New S-03s - from The Buch
Top
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 16:18:14 -0800 From: The Buch <the_buch@telus.net> Subject: New S-03s Just had these tires put on my '99 a couple of days ago after getting 76,000km (46,000mi) mostly highway out of my original Pilot Sports. While I am still working these in so it's too early to tell if this is an upgrade (other than actually having some tread), a couple of observations: 1. The sidewalls are way stiffer, and have an immediate 'spring-rate' equivalent affect (the tire guys (local Porsche dealer I get good tire value from) said that these were the toughest (10-spoke) wheels they have ever worked on) - it took three of them to get the S-03s over the bead retention part of the rim?? 2. I am getting a very slight burnt rubber or brake material smell out of the backs when I pull into the garage - anything to worry about that someone might have messed up?? 3. Curious if anyone has an opinion on how these wear compared to the Pilot Sports. All comparative performance reviews seem to lean to the S-03s, but I found the Pilot Sports to be very impressive in the wet??

Wasn't going to post here, but it's been about 6 days and noone's bid, which surprises me.. price is at $25 plus shipping. I think I've seen people sell these for $50-$75 or more for a pair, so I'm kind of disappointed nobody's bid (especially since I was hoping to get more than $25 :) Anyway, if you're interested, the url is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=600509701&r=0&t=0 thanks - reid

If we break a lens, we buy the aftermarket goodies (that's how I got the Euro headlamps). If Joe Public breaks a lens, either insurance covers it (if it's an accident), or they go to a dealer. There's a glut of these out there. Hang on to them -- if you ever sell your car you'd get more money for the euro set. -peterg (with two complete sets of amber lenses in my basement)

#8. Ellipsoid Fun - from Reid Conti

Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 17:29:08 -0800 (PST) From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> Subject: Ellipsoid Fun More ellipsoids observations, after living with them for a few days. First, a disclaimer.. The lenses on my old US lights were less than transparent.. 6 years, 55000 miles worth of wear on the plastic. Also, they were aimed a bit too low. I originally had stock bulbs in, but put in some 85 watt blue-ish bulbs. I had superwhites in an old car and really liked them, but these were not as good as the superwhites. Better in the dry, but in the wet they tended to blend in with the road. The ellipsoids are the real deal in lights. If you want good lights on your E36, buy euros. I can't comment on the freeform euro lights that came on the later E36's in europe. They use H7 bulbs instead of the H1's in the ellipsoids, and from what I hear are more efficient with light but don't have quite as sharp a cutoff. God I love the cutoff on the ellipsoids, sharper than anything I've seen before, including HID systems in the US. The light is just perfect. If you drive more in the city, you'll think the ellipsoids produce less light because you don't have those two god-awful hot spots of light in front of the car. These are far far far better. You really don't need your high beams to drive on dark roads at night. I love the cutoff, I love the way they kick up on the right side, they illuminate signs on the side of the road so well. These things are massively better than the euro lights I had on 2 of my other cars. Flip on the high beams, and watch out. I've heard that the highs on the ellipsoids are not as good as the US spec highs -- simply not true. They light up the TOPS of the trees. My GOD they're bright. And this is with 55 watt lows and 55 watt highs. I'm trying to track down some 85s within a day or two. I think the 100 watt highs and lows would blow fuses, but 85's are fine with stock wiring (IMO). I want to compare with freeforms sometime. Maybe the freeforms are more efficient, but the light distribution simply can't be better than these things. The ellipsoids have the best light I've ever seen from any headlight system, bar none. They'd be scary good with HID. A friend is getting ellipsoids with HID soon so I can't wait to compare. I'm sure it will be better, I just want to see if it's worth $500 to upgrade. - reid
