Even the best trickle chargers create electrical spikes that fry the least known relay. The DME relay. I never new there existed one (relay for the DME computer) and my expensive Bosch (fully automatic) trickle charger fried the relay. 3 weekends of trouble electrical shooting forced me to pay $$$ for a tow to the dealer where the diagnostics showed a fried DME relay. I always kept a spare fuel pump relay with me but know I also keep a spare DME relay. And definately pull the plugs before charging my battery. The BMW electronics are just too sensitive. Since the stock fan clutch is not electrically operated, that's impossible. (It's a temperature sensitive viscous coupling without external controls.) Your option would be to remove it and substitute an electric fan. Neil 96 M3

I'll be doing a friend's Z3 in a month or two, so it would be good to know in advance. Interesting that this has never come up before AFAIK. The casings I've used for Koni transplantation have all been from 95 M3 models, so apparently I've lucked out. Neil 96 M3

DO NOT run high-current wires to anythin on your dash. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

I don't know why y'all like ATE so much... Motul 600 is the best brake fluid I've had the pleasure of using... The ATE didn't have as much fade resistance, and didn't come back as quickly once it did. It's not even really all that much cheaper, either. That said, I find pads are more of a limiting factor than fluid on my car... My pedal usually stays firm at track events, even using the Valvoline synthetic fluid at $4 a quart. -kit

These are for rear sway bar tabs only though, AFAIK, and I have yet to hear of anything for front brackets... aside from the possibility of GC carrying some beefier brackets as someone else just mentioned. As an option, Turner does sell rear sway bar reinforcements also. Those are the ones I got for apx. $30-$40, but I have yet to get them welded on. #8. Something new and thanks... - from jeff kumler

Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 08:54:53 -0800 (PST) From: jeff kumler <jdkumler@yahoo.com> Subject: Something new and thanks... Thanks for all of the feedback regarding my question about trickle charging my battery. Some information was very good and some was questionable (Chris, I will definitely keep the clamps away from my genitalia). A lot of people did not address the trunk light and the potential gas buildup, stuff you may want to consider. New question: After a recent meeting with my rear bumper and a 740i, I now have a new bumper cover. The last one was pitted very badly from years of abuse. Mainly autocrossing I believe. I think I would like to install mud flaps, both front and rear, or maybe just rear. Would list members recommend them or not? If so, any good sources other than my usual contacts of Alexander, Quality Import, South BMW and VOB. All of whom I've found to be very good with pricing and service. " not going to happen. the stock fan clutch isn't electrically connected like an AC clutch. It's filled with viscous goo that gets thicker when hot and thinner when cold, so it's self-temperature-regulating. A number of people have been removing the engine fan and adding electric main fans instead. Spal makes a 16" fan for about $80 that flows way more than the engine fan and draws 7.5 amps. You can tap into the existing thermostat fan switch for the front aux fan, and add a manual disable switch for drag run (or just unplug it).
