A little off topic, but thought I would ask... I'm going to be out in San Diego next week vacationing (Jim Hall karting school etc...) and wondered if anyone had any suggestions as far as sightseeing. Any other automotive related adventures I should partake in? It will be my first trip to CA, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. #6. electric & viscous fans - part 2 - from RFKoby@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 12:36:03 EST From: RFKoby@aol.com Subject: electric & viscous fans - part 2 Matt, I know nothing is for free, and I know that FWD cars have no easy way to drive the cooling fan mechanically. The point I am trying to make is that the electric fan on FWD cars only runs when it is necessary. It is control by electric thermostat / switch. No need to explain conversion losses to me with the electric fan. I am a mechanical engineer by profession. Take this into consideration. The electric fan only places a load on the engine (indirectly through the electrical system and alternator) when there is a demand from the thermostat / switch. The mechanical fan driven by the viscous clutch is ALWAYS TURNING. The fact that it is ALWAYS TURNING with some drag means that it eats HP. Every 95 M3 fan clutch that I have seen always has a considerable amount of drag even when it is cold. Have you ever noticed how much HP is eaten up by this fan when it does engage. The number might surprise you. to prove the point, let your car get hot, disable the eletric fan, let the viscous clutch engage, and do 0-45mph street starts in 2nd gear and time them. Normally the fan will stay engaged until about 4,000 rpm, or until it cools off. Then to the same runs with the fan removed.... you will notice a great improvement. for this reason, my fan clutch is removed. It helps on the track and during AutoX's. I have a dash switch which by-passes the radiator switch to activate the fan while waiting on grid, or during cool down laps. > -------------------- 6 -------------------- > Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 19:02:08 -0800 (PST) > From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] viscous & electric fans > > Bob, > The idea is that the FWD cars use the electric fans > because they have no choice. I've also noticed that you really need dedicated rotors for track pads and dedicated rotors for street pads. What I've noticed is that after using the PF90s on the rotors and they lay down the layer of black, the stocks pads, though they seem to scrape away the layer, aren't able to completely get rid of the stuff. This results in the stock pads not able to stop the car as well as it used to. To answer your question, go with the el cheapo $45 brembo rotors. Forcing me to read and face the realities is causing me to waiver as I stand on the brink of the slippery slope. I have managed to conjure up all sorts of fantasy based scenarios that convince me I can afford to pursue this hobby. Let's not allow reality to creep into the picture and spoil everything for me. Sometimes I wonder if I had never stumbled across Suzy's website if I would be happily driving around town in a stock M3 with a bunch of cash in the bank and spending my wekends doing something sane like taking my kids to a park instead of sitting around on hot asphalt for hours at a time just to get in 20 minutes of joy. Actually, the thing that amazes me about racers is not the cash being spent, its the time. Where do you get the time to do all the stuff that's needed to keep your car together and track ready. I am amazed. I am just trying to get ready for an HPDE at Sears next week and the list just gets longer and longer. Everytime I do one thing to my car I find three more things that need to get done prior to track day. Oh well, it looks like it will be a weekend of 2:00am driveway work. thanks for the WOB jeff 98 M3/4

Load on the engine transferred indirectly through the electrical system results in more load on the engine than an equivalent load transferred directly without conversion losses. > when there is a demand from the thermostat / switch. > The mechanical fan driven by the viscous clutch > is ALWAYS TURNING. The fact that it is ALWAYS > TURNING with some drag means that it eats HP. DEAD WRONG. Viscous clutch only locks up when the engine is hot (same as the electrical fan running when the temp sensor detects high temps). Other times in free wheels or runs at various degrees of lock up (another reason viscous clutch is better than on-off electrical fan). YMMV, alex f

#10. How Noisy are Koni SAs? - from Michael Schaublin

It is a loud moaning type sound on medium size dips. It appears to be coming mostly from the driver's side, but I can't tell for sure. As far as noise coming in from the trunk, I have reinstalled the speakers but don't have the trunk lining in place, although this is loud enough I don't think the trunk liner will cover it up. The shocks are set 1 full turn from full soft. One other (possibly) relevant detail - when I pulled the OE springs out, there was no rubber disk between the spring and the body, so I did not put one in with the new springs. The new springs seem to have a flatter "seat" giving more contact area between spring and body, which may be causing the noise. Any thoughts?

Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: Click Here
