#1. Vacume noise?? - from Shelhart2@aol.com

Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 20:26:31 EST From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: Vacume noise?? I started the car yesterday a.m. and heard a slight noise .. almost sounded like a fan motor going bad. The noise got progressively worse the next day. I opened the hood before going to the airport and in the top left section of the engine bay, there is a vacume unit, almost like the old charcoal canisters and the it is making a fair amount of noise. The car is performing fine and the noise/vibration in the unit subsides after 5 or so minutes. What is it? Car just passed 50k... Shel Hart

It is all relative to how long the hair is on the Butt dyno! Yes, you can feel a difference of 2% hp, but only when you are passing an identical car that has 2% less!!!, hahaha Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> > . Well > that amounts to about 2% increase. And I dont think there's a person alive > who can feel a 2% increase in hp.

#4. inspection II - from Paul Elliott

Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 20:49:05 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: inspection II >>i told VOB to shove it (and that they lost any future service from me), and took it to tate bmw (and paid for a rental vehicle)... << That would have been me talking about how I got my INspec II covered at 36, 700 miles...So, compared to your experience it sounds like I have an exceptional dealer...However, theres more to it than meets the eye. Yes, he certainly didnt have to cover my car given I was 700 miles over the warranty period when I made the call (900 over by the time I showed up for my appt). But consider the following: 1) I paid them about $10k for a Dinan stageII supercharger purchase and installation 2 yrs ago. 2) I told them I would use the credit to buy a new Dinan suspension at time of Inspection II. Those were his incentives to be nice to me. But just because they covered my inspection II doesnt mean they didnt recoup it and more by some ridiculous labor charges for the 'extra' items I asked them to do. For instance, I'm almost ashamed to admit how much I was charged for a Transmission and Differential fluid change...Write me off line if you want the skinny on the amounts. In addition, they should have given me a free 4 wheel alignment as part of the 7.5 hr labor charge for the suspension, as Dinan told me thats' definitely supposed to be included. As it is, I was charged $140. Then, I told them that the rear trunk badge on the '99s fades, and is covered under a TSB. Instead, there was a $40 charge for it on the bill, which I forced them to remove! Then, they charged me an extra 2 hrs at $91 per, their standard labor charge, to deal with my stereo Stealthbox subs, which needed to be removed and replaced to make room for the rear shocks. Thats about the only extra charge I can accept, as those stealthboxes ARE a bitch. Then, since the air filter is supposed to be covered under INspection II, and since they were crediting me for the service, I wasnt expecting a charge to change the K&N filter which I got from them initially as part of my SC kit.... But, wrong again. 91$ labor to change the filter. On the positive side, they did a terrific job on the suspension installation. No creaks, squeaks, or clunks. No scratches anywhere. Everything put back the way it was. Only thing that through me for a loop was that it sounded like they did something to the right subwoofer, as it was crackling like a blown speaker or something...I got so sick of it that I popped the grill of tonight, and I found what looked like a nutsert or something resting right on the driver, so that anytime a good bass note hit, it would skip and dance around the surface of the speaker, doing a hell of a good blown speaker imitation. Now, so long as that nutsert thingy wasnt an integral part of the stealthbox installation I should be good to go til the next Inspection II. At this point, since Inspection Is are just looking and inspecting, and changing oil, I'll probably just do it and the interim oil changes myself, and let the dealr handle the Inspection IIs. I guess in the end it depends on the attidude of the dealer...One thing he told me I wasnt aware of is that when I asked him to cover the service, I was half doing it tongue in cheek as I really wasnt expecting much, he told me hed have to check with BMW first. I thought it was completely up to the dealer...Since they put a lesser mileage amount on the invoice, it would appear that BMW does have nothing to do with it, and that the dealer will get reimbursed from BMW provided the mileage is under the requisite 36K. --------------------------------------------------------- Paul Elliott '99 White M3; < 40K miles; Dinan stage II SC kit with 6" RMS crank pulley: 11 psi; AA Water Injection; Rotex pads;X-Brace; Dinan Koni Suspension; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio

#5. How Noisy are Koni SAs? - from Paul Elliott

Not even the hint of a sound....For what its worth, since this sees no track action at the moment, the suspension comes initially set up at full soft. The fronts are easy enough to experiment with.....But from what I can see, in my type of driving, full soft is idea....The bumps on our roads are absorbed without jarring, yet control of the car is maintained so much better than before, and turns are done flat. I dont know if this setting has anything to do with the noise difference between us, but I doubt it. I guess I just got lucky on this one, and I guess, the dealer techs did a really nice job. --------------------------------------------------------- Paul Elliott '99 White M3; < 40K miles; Dinan stage II SC kit with 6" RMS crank pulley: 11 psi; AA Water Injection; Rotex pads;X-Brace; Dinan Koni Suspension; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio

#7. electric & viscous fans - from Lew Becker
Top
Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 18:17:13 -0800 From: "Lew Becker" <lmbeckercfls@earthlink.net> Subject: electric & viscous fans I've considered going this route, albeit with Eurosport's parts -- anyone with first hand, daily driver experience in a temperate climate (i.e. SF Bay Area)? Josh posted the following a while ago. Lew Becker You can remove your engine fan and fan clutch and it will definitely improve the performance of your vehicle. If you do remove the fan and fan clutch you will want to replace your electric/aux fan switch with a switch that engages at a lower temperature. This way you can get the best of both worlds. The fan blades found on the engines of BMW's are often ill-balanced and as such generate undesirable engine vibration and even premature water pump or catastrophic fan blade failure. I first learned the benefits of fan removal when I removed the engine fan from my E30 M3. I was surprised to find out that the S14B23 engine as lumpy as it was, was surprisingly smoother once I had removed my engine fan. Again, if you do remove your fan, unless your car is track only, you must make proper adjustments by changing out your fan switch. To change out your fan switch to accommodate engine fan blade removal you must first determine the type of fan switch currently installed on your vehicle. There are two different types of fan switch connectors installed on the E36. The fan switch is the little round sensor that screws into the (passenger side) side tank of the radiator. The sensor has a 3 wire connector plugged into it. Pre 3/97 the switch had a white plastic housing with 2.5mm (~1/8") pins and the post 3/97 production switch has a black plastic connector with very small .5mm (~1/32") pins. The lower temp switch replacement switches on (low/high) fan speed at 80/88 degrees C instead of 91/99 degrees C. This allows your car to maintain the vehicles temp sans engine fan and clutch assembly. In really really hot weather at a stand still in traffic you may have to switch off your A/C but the performance gain is well worth the change. We stock both types of replacement lower temperature switches for the fan blade removal. The price of the temp switch (either version) is $37.50. If you car is supercharged I would recommend keeping the engine fan as your car can use any extra cooling it can get.
