#5. Intermitant Digital Climate Head Unit Fan Control - from Jeremy Conners
Top
Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 03:17:12 -0500 From: "Jeremy Conners" <Jeremy.Conners@compdevsys.com> Subject: Intermitant Digital Climate Head Unit Fan Control I've been having an intermitant failure on my digital climate control head unit. It appears to be losing power now and again to the fan control. No, it's not on auto mode. It 'remembers' the last mode it was in (defrost/dash/foot/etc) but the fan speed control goes dead. It also continues to allow the circulation to the heater core so ambient heat comes through, etc. I pulled the unit and found that by working the connector that I could cause the problem. I removed the unit and disassembled and cleaned it, but there really isn't anything servicable inside. I also looked closely at all the electronics, but there didn't appear to be any obvious problems. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone seen a problem with these units before? Does anyone want to sell one from a track prepped car? TIA Jeremy Conners 97 M3

Paul Elliott Last I knew, there were two companies toying around with positive displacement blowers (Roots-type being a particular species of PD blowers). Downing Atlanta and HIOP racing. DA has essentially scrapped their plans to offer a kit for six cylinder BMWs (they only offer one for the 4 cyl. M44 motor). HIOP was actually taking orders and collecting money for their new kit, but I don't think it ever materialized. I may be wrong, but HIOP was attempting to bring to market the kit originally designed by Corky Bell. Corky scrapped development of a PD blower kit, and is offering turbo kits (well, sort of). Anyway, bear in mind that PD blowers, depending on design, have horrible thermodynamic efficiency, and proper implementation of a PD blower would require a well engineered aftercooler/intercooler. That issue, along with the sophistication of OBD II electronics, seem to have stunted the development of PD kits for our cars. Jeff 97 M3/4, happily naturally aspirated

I offer a tool rental for $50 which covers easy extraction of the old bushing and installation of a new one. No, you don't have to disconnect the half shaft. The way I did it, and you may feel free to do it the way you want, is: - disconnect shocks from rear suspension - raise rear and support on jack stands - use marker to denote where bracket is positioned relative to body to facilitate reinstallation - unbolt three bolts holding rear trailing arm bushing bracket to car - release hand brake - push down on front of trailing arm - use tools to extract old unit - use tools to install new one Now just reverse steps. Overall, it should take 1 - 2 hours. As far as Redline actually making VANOS fail, I am not sure what causes it, but failures with Redline and VANOS are not an isolated incident. It could be that the oil is incompatible with any remaining oil in the motor, oil shearing apart (perhaps creating a oil pressure problem), or some other issue. I know that people have great success with Mobil 1 or BMW synthetic. If you are having no engine problems with either, than I would not try to fix something that is not broken in the first place. Then again, if Redline happens to work for you then keep using it. -Justin -- '76 02 (Whimsical) '97 M3 (Orion) BMW CCA#77056 check out http://users.vei.net/jgerry >>> "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> 01/28 8:47 PM >>> >>Yes, Redline tends to do very UNHAPPY things to the VANOS in our cars. I just ordered up a bunch of the hi performance 10W40, as I ve always wanted to try Amsoil Ive always considered it to be in the same 'premium' catagory as Redline, and Mobil1 too. I have a hard time believing that the Redline is responsible for Vanos failures, but since we seem to be talking about branded oil issues, I was wondering how Amsoil fits with the Vanos equation. Both offer better thermal efficiency than a traditional Roots blower with better response and low end torque than a turbo or centrifical SC. But the efficiency is still a lot lower than the turbo and it doesn't help much with the difficult packaging problem - they still need an IC. -Matt --- Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> wrote: > Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 13:49:31 -0800 (PST) > From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Roots SC for M3 > > Can you say "lysholm s/c'd m3?"
