#2. Cupping of tire - from David Morad

Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 10:29:17 -0600 From: "David Morad" <Dogdave@msn.com> Subject: Cupping of tire I recently took my car to the dealer for a slight shake in the steering wheel at 60 mph and to have my worn out stock shocks replaced with Koni's. They did an alignment and checked the balance of wheels and = came back an said that all 4 tires were badly cupped and needed to be replaced. I didn't replace them considering that they are only about = 20% worn and wear pattern was normal. The backs have appeared to return to normal however the fronts still show the steps. BTW: It is a '97 M3 Coupe stock rims with Bridgestone's RE730's in the stock size, she drives smooth up to 105mph now =20 =20 Am I hurting the car/suspension? Is cupping reversible? Any advice to this novice would be great?=20 =20 Thanks in advance David=20 =20 =20

I believe that was the only difference. I used a 540i HFM on my 95 (from a junkyard). Worked like a charm. If you do not plan on using the euro airbox, I believe the 540 HFm will work fine...again, i think the only difference is the little tabs on the HFM you use to clip it into the airbox. I'm considering a coilover kit from Ground Control utilizing these. I'm also considering a TC Kline Race C/O suspension using Koni factory-built DA shocks. Anybody know how these might compare? Thanks.

I thought Pilot Sports were more prone to cupping...guess not. Do you do any competitive events (autox) or driver schools? Those will cure your cupping problems ;) With my Pilot Sports, I found that the less stiff sidewalls allowed the tread to cup on the shoulders. In order to compensate, I usually ran 38psi front and rear. A day at the track smoothed out the ramps, though <vbg> No, you don't have to replace them and no, you're not hurting the car. It's probably just a louder ride. HTH Chester --- David Morad <Dogdave@msn.com> wrote: > worn and wear pattern was normal. I know 3 different people with the GC kit who _swear_ by it. These are all very competitive nationals-level autocrossers who know suspension set-up. All three chose the Advance Design shocks over everything else GC offered. -peterg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 12:11:24 -0600 From: alex.fadeev@verizon.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] part # for 95 Euro MAF Tim, The 540/740 MAF (part # 0-280-217-800) is indeed the same hardware piece as the euro M3 MAF/HFM. The BMW part number is different by the last 1-3 digits, but it is same unit. Used x40 MAFs go for $125-200 while a new euroHFM is around $400. I bought a used one from a Roundel advertiser for $130 + shipping - it works. Like Tim has pointed out, the difference is in the plastic attachment brackets. The x40 MAF has 'ears' for the airbox to latch onto the x40 HFM similar to those of the stock US M3 MAF. The euroHFM has ears with nutserts in them so that the euro airbox can bolt to the euro MAF. alex f |---------+---------------------------> | | bmwm3nut@att.net| | | | | | 02/03/02 08:16 | | | AM | | | Please respond | | | to bmwm3nut | | | | |---------+---------------------------> >---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> | | cc: | | Subject: [E36M3] part # for 95 Euro MAF | >---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Date: Sun, 03 Feb 2002 14:10:21 +0000 From: bmwm3nut@att.net Subject: part # for 95 Euro MAF I have a MAF meter with part # 0 280 217 502, 1 747 155 Is this the stock MAF or a euro piece for a 95. Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 10:28:30 -0800 From: jim.bassett@alloptic.com Subject: RE: [E36M3] 24hr Daytona I can't answer Bob's original question (and I haven't finished watching the tape of the race), but the ACO has nothing to do with the Grand Am series, which is who sanctioned the Daytona 24hrs. Grand Am and ALMS are the two competeing sprts car series in America. ALMS takes it's rules & regs from the ACO, the sanctioning body that controls the 24 Hours of Le Mans (hence American Le Mans Series). Grand Am in a separate series, with separate rules & regs. (I can't recall for sure, but I *think* Bill France or the France family have a stake in Grand Am. That's NASCAR FYI :-)) The only really competitive BMW was Tony Jennings' entry from last year, with Terry Borcheller as co-driver. It was nice to Boris Said driving in the race. In the pre-race interview he listed all the racing he'll be doing this year, and mentioned it was too bad BMW got out ALMS. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett - was at Sears this weekend, but got home in time to watch the last 3 minutes of the Super Bowl :-) 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP - if it's so ready for Fontana, why do I have a long "to do" list? > -----Original Message----- > From: Carey Probst [mailto:hcprobst@alum.mit.edu] > Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2002 9:36 AM > To: E36M3 > Subject: RE: [E36M3] 24hr Daytona > > > Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 12:27:42 -0500 > From: "Carey Probst" <hcprobst@alum.mit.edu> > Subject: RE: [E36M3] 24hr Daytona > > Best guess, the weight and air intake restrictions imposed by ACO, the > reason BMW dropped out of ALMS. > > Carey Probst, '99 M3/2, BMW CCA Patroon and Genesee Valley Chapters > Sharked, Stressed, Schrothed, Gauged, Hitched, X-Braced > > A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a > free State, > the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Mdriver13@aol.com [mailto:Mdriver13@aol.com] > > Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2002 12:06 PM > > To: E36M3 > > Subject: [E36M3] 24hr Daytona > > > > > > Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 11:56:58 EST > > From: Mdriver13@aol.com > > Subject: 24hr Daytona > > > > > > Hey Group, > > > > Why are the BMWs being beaten up by the Porsches? #9. Polyurethane Bushing Preference Question - from KLchmn@aol.com

Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2002 13:33:58 EST From: KLchmn@aol.com Subject: Polyurethane Bushing Preference Question Gruppe, I have been watching the traffic regarding the rear trailing arm bushings and the apparent list affinity towards the Powerflex brand. Has anyone tried the RTRS polyurethane rear trailing arm bushings? I used their E30 race subframe bushings and they were nice. Just wondering if anyone had put in their trailing arm bushings. I screwed in another screw to hold it tightly, but this is a pretty temporary fix. Anyone have suggestions on repairing this? Doesn't look like an easy welding fix, or I would've done that already. Anyone have a Supersprint center resonator for sale? :) I can probably stand to replace them, they have a few dents and dings... -kit -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .
