They have the largest eye ports of any of the car- specific helmets (great if you like to wear sunglasses), are very light, are well made, and look pretty bad-ass (I have a black "Bandit"-style helmet ;-) -p ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

The eyeport is nice and big, it's very comfortable and it's very light. They cost just under $400 for a SA2000 helmet that will last you 10 years. Good investment IMHO. What I ended up doing was moving my seat one notch forward and leaning the seatback one more notch to fit. But I never was overly comfortable doing that as then my knees would get in the way a bit. The Schroth does wonders for autocrossing, both in terms of helmet clearance and how much better you feel your car. And with the new model that just clips into the rear seatbelt latches, it's almost a no-brainer in my book. But that's just my $0.02. Andrej '97 M3 > Good Point! That's the only downer of my helmet. The black plastic is already history since it's significance was lost on me and TC who sent me the instructions for gutting the front strut cartridges. > You should be able to get the plastic cover off...just use a little > muscle power. With the cover removed, you only need to cut about 3/8" > down from the top of the strut...that is, the top, not the bottom of > the crushed in part. Interesting. 3/8" was also what TC was recommending in his instructions. But it clearly is not enough in my 08/94 production M3. 3/8th was not even enough to shave off all of the crimp protrusion above the roof of the strut cartridge. Perhaps it's one of those early production peculiarities. Let's hope it's the only one. alex > You cut around the tube and of course, you'll > cut into the actual strut insert itself...but that's okay. You just have to get through about 1 - 1.5mm of the strut body before popping the top off with a screwdriver. You do not need to cut all the way through the guts. On some other models, a > strut tower brace can actually save the front strut towers from cracking.) A couple of points to consider. 1) On my M3 the distance between the front strut towers changes by 1-2 mm from the car on its wheels to being supported on jack stands. This suggests to me that some kind of reinforcement is desirable. 2) There's a benefit that I hope most people won't have to put to the test. In the case where another car hits you in the front/side, a brace can help protect your strut towers from being damaged - ask me how I know. I believe that this is partly the presence of the plate bolted on top of the tower, and partly by spreading the load to the opposite tower. > So, the best way to stiffen the front of an E36 is to first use the lower > x-brace. You can add a strut tower brace later, but you won't notice a big > improvement. I agree. > As some may have noticed, the Motorsport strut brace on the LTW was never > used in the race cars. If you really want to stiffen the front chassis, > you tie the roll cage into the strut towers. And/or weld tubes between the strut towers and the firewall. Unfortunately these racecar solutions aren't easily applicable to your daily driver. So failing those, a strut tower brace may not be all bad. I wouldn't bother to buy one that's hinged. #9. Helmet advice? - from Dorffer, Rich

Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 17:03:52 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Helmet advice? I second Chester's comments on Arai. I have two full faced helmets (Quantum/f and yes they are M rated, not SA rated) and they are both superb (but very pricey), and very lightweight with good visibility. They are very light through the use of modern composites (Kevlar, fiberglass and carbon fiber). http://www.araiamericas.com/home.html Their website only has the motorcycle helmets right now but they are adding their auto racing helmets soon. Direct quote from their website "Watch for our new ARAI AUTO RACING HELMETS section, now under construction. Arais are the helmets worn by so many of the top Formula-1, CART, and NASCAR drivers." Overall with any helmet purchase, I recommend finding a place where you can try them on before buying (i.e., this is not the best item to buy on-line as fitment is key) as helmet sizes vary more than jean or shoe sizes ;-) Regards, Rich

Best quote I have heard on the subject from Carroll Smith - something like "if you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet". I just got a new Bell Vortex FA - carbon Kevlar construction means it is lighter than a fiberglass helmet. If you have the money, I would really consider spending it on a lighter helmet. I know there should not be contact or wrecks at driver's schools, but it seems like there is some kind of incident at just about every one. I was in a student's car this year when we hit the wall at RAtl turn 12, not too bad. Going off in turn one at a race later in the year and broadsiding the wall there at about 40 hurt a lot - I bought the new helmet before the next race. I like Bell, I had an M2 before, Stand 21 are excellent, Arai are getting good. Also, BUY THE NECK PROTECTOR AND WEAR IT! I'm currently looking at the Arai right now and probably SA00. It does get fairly pricey though. robert
