I've found the compound in performance tires during the cold just get too hard. They are very easy to break loose... jdk Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 22:16:36 -0800 (PST) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Snow tires vs. Summer stickies > Performance: I was running Yoko Ao32R during the summer and I know the > speeds I can take certain corners around chicago. With the Dinan I can > exceed those speeds in my snow tires Pirelli Assymetricos snow...and > they are narrower than the ao32s Isn't this the oddest thing? Let's see a show of hands...I'm able to break the rear Pilot Sports loose with my LTW flywheel just by slowly engaging 1st so that the car is rolling and just stomping on the gas (Pilot Sports are mounted on 8.5" forged wheels). With my Pirelli snows (225/45, I think), I can't break the tires loose in 35 degree weather using this method (snows are mounted on 7.5" double spoke wheels)!!!! So what gives? Is it the taller tires of the snows (225/45 plus the deeper tread)? Is it the soft compound? The car, however, feels much more visceral with Pilots Sports on, though... ....but the car should be producing more power with the colder air. Odd.... Wayne Miller made this observation with his snows and an OBDII cam kit! Just an interesting observation Chester __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #2. RSMs --> check for cracks in the shock tower ! - from Thomas Salva
Top
Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 10:20:32 -0600 From: Thomas Salva <tsalva@ix.netcom.com> Subject: RSMs --> check for cracks in the shock tower ! Paul, I just went thru the whole RSM ordeal on my 98 M3/4. The RSMs were worn out. I replaced them with E46 RSMs (thanks to several guys from our List). They were BMW part Nr. 33526754096. But the major problem was NOT the worn our RSMs but serious cracks in the RR shock tower itself ! The cracks on mine were radiating outward from the 2x bolt holes and along the circumference of the hole for the top of the shock. In my case after replacing the RSMs (before the new tower was welded in) I still had creaking/clunking when going over bumps. Needless to say my dealer - Erhard BMW in Detroit - had the shock tower repaired at no charge to me even though the M3 is out of warranty ! THANK YOU Erhard !! Check both your shock towers for cracks. The body shop that did the repair on mine said they had done approx. 15x replacements on LR and mine was only the 2nd e36 that had cracks in the RR Thomas I just reviewed the itemized bill for my suspension upgrade and saw the following: " 2 x 33-52-1-137-972 Guide Support...................39.35 tot 78.70" Are what they are calling 'guide supports' what we call Rear Shock Mounts? If so, then the c suc..rs charged me for a part that should be under warranty! heretofore, I had assumed they were *additional* some part needed for the suspension, not a warranty replacement part! Either way, there goes the rsm causing the clink clink theory.

Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 09:20:50 -0800 From: "andy radin" <fourfa@mindspring.com> Subject: repost: rear trailing arm bushing install tips There was a long thread about this recently that I'm unable to find in the archives... Any hints people have for DIY install of the stock rear trailing arm bushings? I have a bearing puller rigged up with two plates and a heavy bolt to squeeze them together. Have the bushings in the freezer and a propane torch for the control arms. Anything else? andy r.

Great quality, and *quite* convenient. I use it every 3k miles or so, but still do the "real" oil changes based on the service lights, just for peace of mind. It "can" remove just as much oil as the drain plug method. There is a limit however. This last change I did, I realized that I can't have too much oil in there from the get-go. I had about 8 quarts in, and it didn't quite suck it all out. Can't remember the capacity of the extractor, but with the factory suggested amount of oil, it works great! I'll just have to be sure not to have added oil so soon before I change it in the future. It just works well for me because I don't have a good place to do the real-deal oil changes on my own. With this, if my landlord comes around, they'd either have no idea what I was doing, or be very happy to see that I can change oil without so much as a drop being spilled anywhere. I have faith in it, but I still feel more comfortable doing the drain plug method once in a while also. Gotta love doing a complete oil change in 15 minutes though. ;) Without the extractor, I'd probably be stuck only getting it changed based on the service lights, so it's very much worth it to me. Well, the weekly schedule pages have no listings. But this isn't surprising, since they are re-launching today as Speed Channel, so I'm guessing there's a bit of transistion going on. Frankly, I'm kinda looking forward to some of the changes. I already like the expanded coverage of the FIA World Rally (caught some of the Swedish rally a week or so ago). Although they didn't show all 24 hours of Daytona, they showed most of it, and coverage was the same as last year. And I wouldn't worry about not having an F1 contract yet. IIRC, it was 2 years ago that Speedvision didn't get the contract from Bernie until the day BEFORE the first race. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP

I liked the commentator from last year better though. The Dakar rally and Daytona were up to par also. All the "NASCAR Classics" shows this weekend were annoying but thanks to Tivo it doesn't really matter.
