#2. Quick Survey -- What are yoyr settings with KONI sports SA - from Paul Elliott

Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 15:41:24 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Quick Survey -- What are yoyr settings with KONI sports SA >>The guy at TCKline told me that with stock E36 M3 springs, I should install them right out of the box as they are set full soft (actually 1 half turn up). << My Dinan/BMW dealer installs his Dinan Koni stage I suspensions with Konis at full soft all around...At least thats what he told me....And, I like the handling and ride combination so much that Ive not even been tempted to fool with it yet. I assure you this does NOT feel soft in any sense of the word....Rather, its much stiffer than stock, but also more compliant when doing the bumps and rolls then was my 37K mile stock suspension, which had already losts its ability to absorb the bumps. I think going any stiffer would be unacceptable with the roads around here...Id be tempted in the future to maybe try a half turn stiffer on the fronts...But to me, the rears is where I feel the bumps more. It seems that the fronts absorb, but if the rears are too stiff, you feel it right in your butt, and throughout your body. I think that the 'hardness' perception one has of their suspension comes more from the rears than the fronts. I dont know if everyone perceives it this way, but thats how it seems to me....Thats why I'll keep the rear settings the way they are, and it doesnt matter to me that theyre harder to get at to adjust. Installation was easy, I didn't require a vise to assemble the senders to the block, I didn't need to find alternate solutions to the crush washers provided, I didn't use a torque wrench to tighten everything down, and I've yet to have any leak. Not even a drip. #5. Camber problems after Control Arm replacement - from Michael Schaublin

After installing new control arms (91 M3 alloy arms with 95 M3 offset bushings, I now have about -5 degrees of camber on the passenger side (heavy lean) and -1 degree on the drivers side (nearly vertical). The ride height is now 20.5 inches on the passenger side, 20 5/8 inches on the drivers side. There were no problems on the install, and the bushings are both properly oriented. I had previously installed a shock tower reinforcement on the passenger side, and I added the reinforcement to the drivers side during this install. I'm stumped as to why my camber is so far out of whack. Any thoughts on cause and solution? </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Mike</DIV></div><br clear=all><hr>MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: <a href='http://go.msn.com/bql/hmtag3_etl_EN.asp'>Click Here</a><br></html>

I have been running the 8.5" set-up with Michelins 245/40 in the front with no problems...but then I did not swap the strut hats for more negative camber. #7. Coolant leak and overheating at the track - from VT
Top
Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 03:35:07 -0800 (PST) From: VT <fstbmwm3@yahoo.com> Subject: Coolant leak and overheating at the track Yesterday at the track, (after the 3rd lap) I noticed that the temp gauge was in the red zone, and immediately coolant begun to spray under the hood and towards the passenger side. Thankfully I was close to the pit entrance and poped the hood open. There was sprayed coolant everywhere (in the engine comp.), but the coolant tank was still almost full with clean-fresh coolant fluid. Could not find any visible leak. Running the engine after 1 hour of cooling off, would not produce leaks and the engine would overheat in less than a minute. Therefore I would assume that the block is not getting any coolant and thus the plastic pre-95 water pump is gone. Towed the car to the dealer (20min form the track) and left it for water pump R&R and 80degree thermostat upgrade (assuming the dealer confirms my guestimate cause of trouble. Dealer will charge me 1/2 hour labor for the pump and thermostat, plus about $40 for the part (I am in Europe now). Another propable cause I thought of, was an improperly tightened coolant tank cap, that leaks when pressure builds up. When pressure is lost the engine overheats. Unfortunatelly , the one and only day that I forgot to bring my tool kit along at the track, is the day my car breaks down. Therefore I was forced to get towed to my friendly (yes its true) dealer. What do you guys think ? Is this a case of the dreaded pre 96 water pump ? Although the car was in the red heat zone for less than a minute, is this enough for head damage ? The car revs fine (albeit a weird marble noise from the water pump area at 5k rpm) Regards, Vlasis ===== 1995 M3 Custom Intake w/ heat shield & custom K&N, Euro HFM, Bored out Throttle Body, Hi flow injectors, Schrick cams, JimC. chip, Supersprint Euro size headers, Dr. Gas Crossover/ Eurosized, Supersprint Euro size exhaust w/ no-cats,lightweight flywheel, 3.23 rear diff w/ 40% lock, H&R race springs,Koni Sports s/adj., Dinan camber plates,Dinan offset plates,Motorsport front strut brace,Schnitcher rear strut brace, UUC tranny mounts, all Powerflex bushings, anorexic diet to 2750lbs (dry weight,no driver) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 10:30:59 -0500 From: "Dave Spragg" <dspragg@attbi.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Coolant leak and overheating at the track My guess is the plastic pump fins failed and that allowed an overheat condition. From there the pressure vented through the overflow cap which is spring loaded. The springs in this cap are also known to fail over time and start spritzing coolant even when the car is not overheating but is warmer than normal. This happened to my 95 motored track car and to another 95 at the track. In my case I didn't know what was going on and the coolant smell sent chills through me headed into NHIS's south NASCAR oval so I packed up and went home. In the other case I guessed what was going on and based on the very small volume they got to finish their track day. Get a new cap and I bet your problem goes away, as for the weird marble noise from the water pump area, I have no clue.
