Koni's are a little softer and they are somewhat adjustable. However, if you want to keep the absolute same ride comfort, I'm not sure Koni or Bilstein will fit you. You may want to get new stock struts/shocks. Stock shocks/struts are OK as long as they last. My biggest grip against the stock struts is they don't last more than 30,000 miles. Used a write up describing the install but still ran into the following problems: 1) When trying to install the bushing using a bolt/washers/oil filter cap wrench the bushing would go in "cocked" and even bent the metal part of the bushing!! How do I prevent it from sliding in cocked? The write up said it's ok if it's cocked at first but the metal bent!! (bushing is ruined..install aborted) 2) I picked up a 2 and 3 arm jaw pulley to try and "press" it in...no luck either. What tool would u suggest? What am I doing wrong? Replies can be privated to me if this has been a beaten topic. Thanks a lot guys Jeff

Is this correct? Has anyone on this list actually used these shells to hold a 6x9, or is it something that you simply "heard from a friend"." Peter et al, my 98 came with the HK 6x9s. I removed them in favor of two 10" free-air subs. I unbolted the speaker pods and test fit a pair of JBL 6x9s with standard bolt pattern (for my other vehicle), and they line right up. You could discard the bottom section of the pod, leave the tweeter/mid unhooked or removed, and use the upper pod shell to bolt them in. It doesn't look like you can just order the upper pod in the ETK, but it would be a worthwhile purchase if you come across a set used and cheap. I'd recommend the Kicker 6x9 sub from their free-air series as a nice experiment. I've been thrilled with the 10" version, but I spend a few weekends fitting them in and the 6x9s would drop right in. andy r. 98 m3/2

Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2002 00:20:09 -0800 From: Andy Radin <fourfa@mindspring.com> Subject: alignment woes My 98 M3 sustained some serious damage in an incident this winter (impact to right rear quarter panel and trunk, went over a curb fast enough to blow three tires and bend a few wheels). I haven't made any noise about this until now. Alignment specs at the body shop looked fine (-0.8 deg neg. camber in the rear in particular). Finally installed some components I'd had in the garage for a while (H&R OE Sports, new rear trailing arm bushings with Ground Control UHMW spacers). Toe bushings were installed to the same position at the ones coming out (all the way flush to the trailing arm, both sides). Ride height in the rear appeared unchanged or slightly lower, but with a great deal of positive camber. With the tape measure, height is within 1/4" of my pal's stock M3. Took the car to the alignment pros (Custom Alignment in Mountain View, for reference. Bay Area people can vouch that these guys are not monkeys). They were unable to dial out the positive camber - at max adjustment of the eccentric cam, it's still +0.20 deg! Likewise, there was not enough travel in the toe adjust to even out the two sides (left +0.05, right -0.05) and could not get my desired 1/8" toe in. The only thing I can possibly think of is that the car spent a few days with the rear suspension (no wheels, no toe bushing, slack on brake line) hanging loose in the air while the weather cleared. There appears to be no damage to subframe, chassis, or control arms that I or the techs at Custom Alignment (who've done plenty of M3s) could spot. Questions: how can the camber and toe go so far out without a major change in ride height? Did the body shop just fabricate alignment data to get rid of me? Could hanging unloaded affect something? Possible mis-installation of toe bushings and spacers? Two options are the adjustable lower arms from Active Autowerke and BMP (both urethane bushings AFAIK, no interest in spherical bearings) for around $300. If I do have to go in this direction, any reason to pick one or the other? andy r. 98 m3/2
