#3. [E36M3] Oil and TSB 110400 - from RogRacer@aol.com

Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2002 20:21:59 EST From: RogRacer@aol.com Subject: [E36M3] Oil and TSB 110400 Alright, I admit it. I'm confused about oil. How embrassing. The owner's manual in my 95 M3 (7/94 build) calls for 15W-50 or 20W-50 oil for my climate (Florida). However, I've seen reference to a "TSB 110400" that supposedly calls out 5W-30 synthetic as superceeding prior recommendations. Can anyone confirm this? I know many people are running 10W-30 synthetics, and even the new 0W-30 Amsoil without problems. I just would like clarification on BMW's "official" recommendations...particularly for early build '95s....before making a switch. TIA, Roger RogRacer@aol.com '95 M3

I had a '96 328is that had the longer 10,000 mile service interval ('95s had 7500 mile interval), and at that time (Jan '96) the 3year/36,000mile included maintenence wasn't implemented. Sometimes, there really isn't a conspiracy :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett previous 1996 328is (RIP) current 1998 M3/4 current 1993 325is #44 KP

Actually, the hd won't spin up because the heat and cold will cause the platters and read/write arms to expand/contract. They engineer some variances for this but not much. The hd case is sealed in a clean environment. Humidity and airborne particles would cause the arms to crash into the platter(s). -Bobby Burns cds faster with a 24x writer and isn't THAT anal about music. ----- Original Message ----- <snip> > The minimum operating temp is 5C. Every HDD I've ever seen is not really sealed (maybe some super new ones are, though). They have a sub-micron paper filter that keeps the dust out but does not prevent air and moisture from coming in or going out. So it's very possible to have condensation occur with temp changes, which could also cause ice (condensation alone is enough to kill it). What you say may also be true. Either way the point that these things aren't really suitable for a car environment stands. Well, I suppose that you could try to seal the entire HDD inside the player but this doesn't help with the expansion issues. The portable HDD products are able to skirt the temp problem by > requiring the user to bring it inside at the end of the day. I'm not saying the following items will hold up quality-wise, but they are certainly true aftermarket products. I don't think you can bring the Sony unit inside easily to keep it at a decent temp, but the Kenwood you can easily bring inside. I don't need to get my hopes up, since I already have the best, the empeg. The drawbacks to the Sony are having to rip your cds IN your car (time consuming, ugh), or transfer your MP3 files via memorystick (Expensive and slow). The Kenwood unit is slightly better, but it sucks that you have to leave it in the trunk like a changer. I think for many people, though, either one of these will make more sense than the empeg.
