#3. my car has annoyed me enough for one day - from Reid Conti
Top
Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 23:49:38 -0800 (PST) From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> Subject: my car has annoyed me enough for one day OK, first of all I have the epic obnoxious stereo install going on.. unless I'm going completely nuts I've recieved two defective amps so far. So, just to confirm.. is there any reason running power and ground to the amp directly from the battery is a bad idea? I thought it was generating noise, but i think it's a bad capacitor. The amp has an AC hum when the system is first powered on. I have tested this theory by connecting the amp to battery +, battery -, used battery + for a turn on lead, and hooked up only the speakers.. leaving the car off, the deck COMPLETELY disconnected from the amp (not to mention off), and it still generates the hum, on the front channels only. The hum comes on when the amp powers up, then goes down in pitch but not in volume, until it stops entirely, about 15 seconds after amp power-on. Same symptoms when it's hooked up to my system.. amp performs flawlessly, it just does the hum when it's turned on. If you leave the amp powered on for long enough with the car off, the hum comes back (I think as the voltage on the battery drops). Is this all amplifier-related? Or should I be worried that it comes back after I have the car off for a short time? I've tried other grounds, but they've all been crappy and caused the same problem anyway. I think it's the amp, but the only things that bother me are the following: First, the noise comes back when the car is off but the system is on for a short (1-2 minute) period of time. if it was all amp-related, it seems like the system would be able to pull enough power from the battery to keep this noise from happening for a good hour after the car is shut off.. the battery should not drain that quickly. But then again, maybe it's a sign of the amp being defective, that it needs more voltage than it should. A friend who knows a lot about electricity says it's definately a bad capacitor sound, but it worries me that it comes back when it runs with the car off for a short time. Perhaps I'm not getting enough amperage to the amp? The other thing that bothers me about the defective amp theory is that this is my second one. The first one did this on the rear channel. Or at least it did before it quit working entirely. This one's doing it on the front. Anyway, any help from you car stereo experts would be greatly appreciated. the other thing that's annoying me.. can I not have a US style date and 24 hour time on my clock at the same time? IE, I want my date to say 02.20 for feb 20, but the clock to be 24hr. I swear it used to work that way, but now they seem linked. It's hard to tell, because I never look at the date, but this is annoying me anyway.. because.. I'm trying to do the OBC test where you get the voltage to show up (supposedly #19), but it doesn't work. At first I could unlock functions, but entering number 19 once unlocked just brought up the lock/unlock screen again (which makes sense, because the instructions on unofficialbmw.com basically give the same directions to access the battery voltage screen as to unlock the system), but now I can't even unlock it.. it doesn't like 22 for the month plus date (02 + 20) anymore.. it used to be fine with it. ugh, how annoying. OK, sorry, thanks for listening to my rant.. - reid

#7. 4/5-Point Harness with Stock Seats?? - from Roy Kao

Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 09:37:55 -0500 From: "Roy Kao" <bimmerphile@hotmail.com> Subject: 4/5-Point Harness with Stock Seats?? Hello Gruppe, I am planning to install a half-cage in my M3/2 daily driver soon in order the enjoy the use of a harness. However, I don't plan to change the front seats just yet and I'm looking for some input from listers who do use a harness with their stock seats. As well, I would prefer a 5-point setup and a mount could be welded on to the floor under the seat. Would the use of my stock seat impede such an installation? I realize it wouldn't be as ideal as using a seat with a hole for the 5-point setup but any input would be greatly appreciated. TIA. Roy, Not to take anything away from roll bars and cages, but you do not need them to mount a harness. See www.hmsmotorsport.com for details. > However, I don't plan to change the front seats just yet and I'm > looking for some input from listers who do use a harness with their > stock seats. Schroth Ralley 3 or 4 belts work great with stock seats. Following Schroth installation instruction shoulder belts are anchored at the rear stock seat belt mounting points. > As well, I would prefer a 5-point setup and a mount could be welded on to > the floor under the seat. To properly install the crotch belt with a 5-point harness you need to have it going perpendicular or at most 20 degrees from perpendicular to the floor. In other words, you will need to cut a hole through the bottom cushion of your stock seat if you plan on installing a 5-point harness. The HMS site used to have great Schroth 5-point installation instructions illustrating the above point, but I can't find them on their new re-designed site. alex f '95 M3 with Schroth Ralley 4 for autoX and stock 3-points belts for track until I install a roll bar or a cage.
