#4. Subject: Spurious(?) coolant level warning - from Mo Karamat

Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 22:59:43 -0500 From: Mo Karamat <karamatm@optonline.net> Subject: Subject: Spurious(?) coolant level warning David, I also have a 98 M3/4 that had the same problem. I had a VERY small leak in one of the small tubes right behind the radiator. I am sorry, I do not remember exactly where. It was a very minute amount, but apparently enough to set the sensor off.. Take a look at them. hope this helps Mo -------------------- 2 -------------------- Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 20:01:03 -0500 From: David Ripton <dripton@wizard.net> Subject: Spurious(?) coolant level warning Lately the check control on my 98 M3/4 has been telling me to check the coolant level when I first start the car. The warning always clears itself quickly as the engine warms up. (I have not taken scientific enough measurements to tell whether this varies significantly with outside temperature. It did start happening when it was cold out, but that could be coincidence.) Of course I've checked it several times (cold: Mr. Yuk says never to uncap a hot radiator), and it's always been fine. (It started off fine, and then I added a wee bit of antifreeze + water to make it exactly reach the reservoir's top fill mark. Haven't tried overfilling it to see if that makes the light stay out, since I trust the mark more than the sensor.) I'm pretty sure the problem is the sensor, not the coolant level. The engine is running fine and the engine temperature seems about right. Anyone seen false alarms for coolant level in a BMW? Is there a known problem with the coolant level sensor? Since it does consistently go off as the engine warms up rather than staying on, this seems like a miscalibration rather than a completely dead sensor. Could be mechanical (like a fill level sensor that's sitting half an inch too high), or electrical (like an analog sensor voltage that's a bit low because of a corroded contact). Does anyone know if a coolant level fault is saved until cleared, as opposed to being newly triggered every time? (I know, the infomation to display fault codes is on Jim C's page. I should go try that.) Wondering if I'm seeing echoes of the first warning rather than a new warning each time. Thanks. -- David Ripton dripton@wizard.net -------------------- 3 --------------------

#5. BMW Magazines - from Mike Kanaly

Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 20:29:55 -0800 From: "Mike Kanaly" <mike@worklife.com> Subject: BMW Magazines I recently purchased an M3 and have yet to find any magazines relevant to high performance M3's or even bmw's. Anyone have any suggestions? I would prefer a stateside magazine, as the shipping costs of euro mags are absurd. I'm used to having a bunch of magazine's at my disposal, as I'm coming from the Japanese car scene (Daily driver was a modded 1G Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo). Let me know what you guys are reading! Thanks! -Mike

I also subscribe to BIMMER, which has a little more high performance content, but only comes out every 2 months. Roundel is monthly. #10. Toyo RA1 air pressures - from Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com

Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 22:01:24 -0800 From: Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com Subject: Toyo RA1 air pressures Gang; Just got some new Toyo RA1 235/40/17 on my LTW front and rear mounted on 17x8.5 inch wheels. My LTW has H and R sport springs, RD sport sway bars and koni single adjustable shocks. I'm wondering what others are using for cold pressures and what you like your pressures to be at the end of a track session. For my first school on these tires I started with 32/32 F/R cold and warmed up to 40/40 when hot. Thanks, Marc 95M3CSL
