Last time I forgot and got out to pump when I was there the attendant yelled at me and told me he'd get in trouble if he let me do it. At least he cleaned the windshild too. Kind of miss service, esp. since the gas there is cheaper than NY. #2. Wheel and tire time - from dripton@wizard.net

Date: Sun, 10 Mar 2002 11:33:32 -0500 From: <dripton@wizard.net> Subject: Wheel and tire time Finally in the market for a new set of summer wheels and tires for my stock-suspended 1998 M3/4. Thought I'd look for feedback from the list before I take the plunge. What I want: 1. Same size front and rear so I can rotate tires. 2. Easy fit -- no spacers, no fender rolling, no rubbing. 3. Simple open 5-straight-spoke design. 4. Easy to clean. (I *hate* split spokes.) 5. Total cost (wheels + tires) $2k or less. 6. Within the limitations above, as much wet and dry grip as possible, as much wheel strength as possible, and as little weight as possible. (I know, that's a bit vague.) I'm leaning toward 17x8 SSR Integrals with Bridgestone S-03 PPs. Anyone running that combination who can confirm fit? I've heard the complaints that the Integrals don't drain water very well, which I can deal with. Any other caveats? I expect that I'll have to buy new (because every time I see used wheels I like for sale, someone snaps them up fast), but if you're trying to sell wheels that match the ones I'm trying to buy, let me know. Thanks. -- David Ripton dripton@wizard.net

I'm planning on buying some specialized wheel cleaner, and want to be sure I'm getting the right stuff for what our wheels are made out of. What are some products you guys frequently use? Usually I use all of Mother's Products, and occasionally Meguire's. How about for the interior leather seats? I was thinking mothers leather conditioner and cleaner? Let me know! -Mike

I pull over and notice that the rear lower arm has split in half and part of = it is dragging on the ground. Is this the trailing arm? It is the arm that attaches somewhere near the front on the diff and to the lower part of the brake carrier. Is this the trailing arm. Are this the same thing Rouge and AA sell in adjustable form? Well I had to baby the car home (30 miles). I was so scared the other part of the arm would brake and the wheel would fly off. =20 Thanks in advance =20 Bill P

I wasn't tuning them when I owned it, but I know some folks who have done work to them. Bill Arnold campaigned one in the One Lap last year. He replaced the eta head with the head from a 325i, and installed a chip for that swap from Dinan. He replaced the brakes with brakes from the 740i (don't know the details) and got some upgraded (read: light) wheels and tires. The thing was a total sleeper. They did pretty well (it was covered in the Roundel). He had done some lightening, but not a whole lot. The interior was intact. If I were you I'd also replace the metal bumpers with the fiberglass Euro replicas. That'll save you a ton of weight. -peterg (love my M3, but miss my little 5)

The only specialized wheel cleaner that I've used is made by P21S, a gel cleaner. Worked pretty well at getting some very dirty wheels clean. But generally I just use what I wash the car with, Sonax Gloss Shampoo. >What are some products you guys frequently use? Usually I use all of >Mother's Products, and occasionally Meguire's. > >How about for the interior leather seats? I was thinking mothers >leather conditioner and cleaner? I've used Lexol with good results. I may be trying Leathermaster Leather Care Kit next. A good source for car care products is Car Care Specialties (http://www.carcareonline.com/index.html); I usually just go with their recommendations. They always seem to work for me.
