Aside for one E28 M5 rolling (3 times) there were no big offs or spins. Although one utterly destroyed car kinda makes up for that (the owner wasn't even driving...his friend was!!!). Everyone was okay BTW. Everyone seemed to have a great time! Even though I was staff I got to have a few sessions on the track... Man was it fun going 125 on the back straight!!! Best part of the weekend? Meeting people that I only knew from the list... That was cool! Anyway, I wanted to stop and meet a = couple of you that I knew were going to be there-- but we had miles (hundreds actually) to go before we slept so time was of the essence.=20 =20 Anyway, I hope that it was a safe and fun event-- I just wanted to let you guys know that I was extremely jealous! A great group of people and perfect weather (cool mornings and mild afternoons). I can honestly say that it was one of the most enjoyable weekends I've had in recent memory.... not to rub it in, of course. ;) ;) Jonathan "This is going to become a very expensive hobby" Lawson >From: "Jason Lombard" <racebro@santacruzbicycles.com> >Reply-To: "Jason Lombard" <racebro@santacruzbicycles.com> >To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> >Subject: [E36M3] Jealous >Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 13:32:57 -0600 > >Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 11:26:56 -0800 >From: "Jason Lombard" <racebro@santacruzbicycles.com> >Subject: Jealous > > >So it's friday night, and my wife and I are stopping by the Carl's Jr. >in Buttonwillow for some grub on our way through to see family in >Redlands. Got to love those huge Niche wheels (or something like them, I don't know my mammoth chrome wheels too well). Rob Levinson is a particularly big fan of these I hear so maybe he knows better ;-) With that kind of money sunk into that car, some of the racers here would have bought a cage for the car along with other goodies, an aluminum trailer, a tow vehicle, etc. I would have reposted that link but I shudder at the thought. #7. Front Strut tower durability - from dholeman

Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 15:27:11 -0500 From: "dholeman" <dholeman@racepad.com> Subject: Front Strut tower durability Running stiffer springs will definitely transfer more stress to the shock towers of any E36. This is a notorious weak spot. I have Bilstein Group N coilovers with TC Kline camber plates and the stress loads creased my shock towers. This was a known problem on the DTM circuit and BMW made a lesserknown shock tower reinforcement. They basically double stamped a shock tower at the sheet metal factory and basically had a cap one could weld on top of thier shock tower. Evidently there was no part number as this was a limited run done for the motorsport group. This are NLA and I have tried like the devil to find them but to no avail. I know that one or two pairs made it into the US but were promptly welded on to the cars. This would have been a great aftermarket part to replicate but no dice. So what can you do. After some research I found that BMW started makeing an insert that goes between the shock tower and the strut cap (top of the shock) for the 96 and later E36's. BMW wouldn't have started making these unless this was a known problem. These can easily be ordered from your dealer and installed by them or if you are DIY it is a pretty easy job. These plates help spread the load more evenly across the shock tower to prevent failure. You can read all about this at www.racepad.com under the tech section under worn shock towers pics, part #s and all. If you want to be real serious for track use about the only option these days is to have a great body shop salvage an extra pair of shock towers from a doner car and have them weld them over or under your existing towers. This is not a simple task. Other solutions I have have seen for track cars are to have the cage extend to the top of the front shock towers. The tubes come from the fire wall and meet on the shock towers. There are several variations of this but the theme is the same. The strut brace/bar will help in side to side play on the shock towers. You can read about that in the same tech section at www.racepad.com too. As you can see I have the motorsport bar and it does not address the vertical weakness of the shock towers. It only helps keep them from shifting from side to side. David

As a former S2000 owner, I know this. I've also seen folks learn this on the track. One guy, over and over again in the same weekend. I witnessed each of three spins, and winced each time. Our M3's are downright stable and user friendly by comparison. No excuse for idiocy behind the wheel, though. Jeff 97 M3/4

#10. Wheel Vibration - from Paul Elliott

Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 22:25:32 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Wheel Vibration >>I have a 98 M3/4 that I just had Bridgestone S03-Pole position tires installed on. And I am having the same problem that Paul did. I get a slight steering wheel vibration between 60-70. I have taken the car to two shops, and both tell me that the wheels are balanced. Does anyone know a shop like the one he mentioned in the Morris county area?<< Do what I did...First get to the Hunter website, look for the Gsp9700, and it will direct you to shops in your area that have it....Then, simply call them up and schedule your appt...I cant exclaim enough how wonderful this machine is...After 3 yrs of having nobody be able correct this shimmy, this one shop did the trick simply by redoing the work of several shops prior with the correct machine... Good luck.
