Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2002 09:48:37 -0500 From: morris.michael@adlittle.com Subject: Radiator Swap Help! Hello List, Last night I had the unfortunate luck of having my radiator neck FAIL while driving down rt. 93 through Boston. I have never been so scared watching my temp needle just start climbing. I managed to pull over on the side of the highway before I got into the red. Let the car cool down for 10 minutes, then humped the car to the next exit, 1/4 mile up, shutting the car off again, right before the red zone. ('95 w/ 92K miles). In retrospect, I am pissed for not swapping the radiator when doing my water pump, thermostat, etc., when I knew the neck was a weak point, but I have continued to inspect it and have seen no signs of fatigue. I wish I wan't so cheap sometimes! A couple questions for you all: 1. Where is the best place to get a cheap radiator fast. (Next day air?) --I know cheap and fast do not mix well, this is what I have found so far: -http://www.parts4bmw.com/: $170.00 on ebay, not including shipping. -Herb Chambers BMW of Boston: $384.00 -Private BMW repair facility: $320.00 2. Has anyone overheated their vehicle to borderline "in the red" and not have any adverse effects? I am fearing the worst: a warped head, and/or the next worse, a ruined head gasket. 3. Finally, anyone know any shortcuts when swapping the radiator. I plan on following what Matt Henson wrote in his email dated Thu, 15 Feb 2001: Anyway, what I do is.. 1) Put car on stands to drain the radiator 2) Remove plastic cover over the rad/nose of car 3) Release radiator retainers on the top. They aretwo plastic arms that hold it in place. Just insert aflat screwdriver in the slot, where the arrow points. 4) Remove the 2 plastic thingies that hold the top ofthe shroud to the rad. They look like big rivets. You just pull out the middle piece and the whole thingcomes out. 5) Remove upper and lower hoses from rad. Also removethe vent host, right above the upper hose. 6) Unplug the reservoir level sensor and coolant temposensor. 7) Lift shroud to separate from the rad. 8) Carefully remove old rad. 9) Clean up spilled fluids.Installation is reverse. Thanks everyone! Regards, Mike Morris **** This is intended for the addressee only and may contain confidential business information. It may not be copied without our permission. I already have all the parts except the temp switch (should I replace it as well if I'm replacing the water pump/housing?). I got really good prices from Zygmut motors. Please let me know if you do a writeup. Thanks, Luis '99 MCoupe '95 M3 '86 325 -------------------- 7 -------------------- Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 18:34:47 -0500 From: Robert Chay <rchay@mindspring.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Dealer Discounts on Parts Thanks for all the replies. I used to use Nick Alexander for most of my purchases but for the small stuff and stuff I need in a pinch, I usually go to some of the local dealers but they all bend me over w/o even a kiss. The reason I brought this up is because I'm working on getting all the parts necessary to remove the fan and replace the thermostat, tstat housing (aluminum), aux fan temp switch, Redline water wetter, BMW antifreeze and the gaskets. I have everything but the water wetter and temp switch which are both on order and should get them by the end of the week. If there's enough interest, I'll do a writeup (hopefully with pics). -Bobby

One comment on the PBR Calipers is that they make changing pads at the track extremely easy. Once you done it once, you'll know what I mean. -Mel -----Original Message----- From: Jake Tiggersman [mailto:jtigole@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 13, 2002 7:19 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Re: Big Brakes Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 17:09:14 -0800 (PST) From: Jake Tiggersman <jtigole@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: Big Brakes <The calipers are more similiar to the Corvette stock brakes.> Dan is right, they are Corvette calipers...can be had at any Chevy dealer. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2002 07:41:49 -0800 (PST) From: Chris Huff <huffgroup@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Removing Fan (was Dealer Discounts on Parts) I have tried to research archives about removing the fan without much luck. Can someone either explain to me why the tstat needs to be changed or point me to some info? I pulled my fan off last week and haven't noticed any change in the temperature gauge. The engineer in me doesn't understand the correlation between using the aux. fan vs. water pump mounted fan and the tstat. If the engine is designed to run at 88 or 92 deg, why should I lower it to 80 deg? Also, the current switch is a 90-98 (I believe). So, with the current tstat, that would work fine, ie the fan comes on low if the temp starts to exceed the tstat temp and on high if the temp hits 98. Is this correct? I have seen the posts that say "PTG does it so it must be right." Can someone give me a little better explanation? FYI, insurance on the race car is only $1k a year (not USAA) for stated value coverage, and while including collision/liability coverage, the policy has NO racing exclusions!!! #10. Why I hate Autox so very very much. - from Mark Radelow
Top
Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2002 17:03:34 +0000 From: "Mark Radelow" <radelow@hotmail.com> Subject: Why I hate Autox so very very much. Sorry if this is a waste of bandwidth for you guys... I thought it was funny. Mark Here are 30 things you can do now to get ready for the upcoming autocross season (started for some): 1. Put on clothes you would typically wear on a hot day. Run in place, in your shower, with cold water cascading down on you, and sporadically bend over and pick up something. Do this for 1 hour. 2. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 3. Fill a blender with ice, hit the pulse button and let the spray blast your face. Leave the ice on your face until it melts. Let it drip into your clothes. 4. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 5. Put on clothes you would typically wear on a cold day. Go to a steel plant and run in place next to the smelter and sporadically bend over and pick something up. Do this for 1 hour. 6. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 7. Got to a tanning salon and get a good sunburn on your face. Then, put your face in front of a fan, turn the fan on, and throw sand into the back of it. 8. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 9. Crawl under your car and sporadically drop nuts and bolts, hot oil, grease, and old rubber hoses on your face. Scrape a hose clamp across your knuckles. 10. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 11. Pour oil and anti-freeze all over your body, put sunscreen in your eyes, and stand in the sun for 1 hour. 12. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 13. Don't drink any liquid for 12 hours. Then quickly drink 4 cans of beer. 14. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 15. Drink 3 cups of coffee and wait 6 hours before going to the bathroom at the worst gas station you can find. 16. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 17. Push your car up and down the block 3 times wearing your helmet with the visor down. 18. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 19. Find a highway construction area and run over every orange cone you can see. Then get out, walk back, and put every cone back in its place while arguing with each construction worker you encounter. 20. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 21. Get up at 4:00am and drive in heavy traffic for five hours - anywhere - towing your race car. 22. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 23. Push a small bucket over your head before you go to bed each night. 24. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 25. If you wear glasses, begin wearing them with glue smeared on the lenses. Sporadically pop one of the lenses out and scrape it on the ground. 26. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 27. Buy a new pair of driving gloves or shoes and immediately throw one away. 28. Throw $25 away right now (SCCA members throw away $20). 29. Slam your thumb in a car door. Take a short length of 2" round pipe and bash yourself in the head with it. Run over your foot with your car. Periodically stumble and fall. 30. Repeat all of the above every Sunday until it's time for the real thing. -------------------------------------------------------------- Reminder: E-mail sent through the Internet is not secure.
