If you have to stand on top of the car for the remote to work, why just not use the key? <G> What I did was go to an authorized Alpine dealer (basically Kmart, these days - barely joking.) and had them order an antenna for one of their alarms. The one I got was very long, and I was able to run it around behind the dash a bit, and then shoot it up the passenger a-pillar. I can lock/unlock my car from very far away now. Even from inside restaurants, buildings, etc. Good luck. Rob PS. If BMW NA is reading this, your current antennas may be very nice. The old ones sucked, though. <VBG> -----Original Message----- From: Miles Hayes [mailto:hayesmiles@msn.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 10:57 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Remote Locking range problem Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 18:53:06 +0000 From: "Miles Hayes" <hayesmiles@msn.com> Subject: Remote Locking range problem My 95 M3 is equipped with factory alarm/remote locking. The problems I have is with the range of the remote. When the weather is cold I am able to lock/unlock the car from 50 feet away or more. In the spring/ summer when the temperature inside the car is warm the range on the remote is very short. Sometimes in the heat of the summer I have to hold the remote very near the windshield to get the car to lock or unlock. Has anyone had this problem or have a solution to this problem? The problem is unique to me but I do have a couple of comments. The alarm module located under the passenger side dash has an antenna on it. Make sure it is located properly and not detached, mangled, etc. Also, the batteries in your remote could be on their way out. Neither of these explain the intermittent problem due to the heat though?!? Also, anyone with a remote can increase the distance/range by placing the remote under their chin, pointing it upwards into the bottom of your jaw, when you press the button. Don't think this helps, try it and get back to me. Disclaimer: Not responsible for high doses of radiation anyone may suffer from their remote. Regards, Rich - Used the method I describe above with my last three vehicles to increase the range at times. 95 M3 - Keyless entry.....errrr....factory alarm 89 325is - I wish it had keyless entry

I've never tried the chest, but under the chin does extend the range of the remote. Maybe someone should market a small barbie-type human head that we can attach to our transmitters. It's much more entertaining to bystanders if you point the remote at the side of your head and point your finger at the car. Donna >

#7. SKYC_INTERNATIONAL Wheels? - from Dorffer, Rich

Stephen writes > > Does anyone have experience w/this company or their wheels? > http://cgi6.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewListedItems&userid=SKYC_INTERNATIONAL I have no experience with this company but I know those are some pretty impressive knock-offs and they look like the originals. I would be concerned that the finish is not nearly as good as BMW (in terms of durability) and the wheels are probably very cheaply made in some Asian country. I would never use them on the track as they probably weigh a lot too and likely don't meet TUV standards. But they do look like the wheels they are imitating and may be nice for the street (second set of wheels and tires or for snow tires) if someone does not want to spend the bucks on the originals (two to three times as much). Regards, Rich 95 M3 - buttery soft double spokes!! PS - Stephen - Wait, I thought you were unloading your E36M3 and all it's goodies?

I'll throw a tidbit out here to share with the list. A few years back, I decided the stock 12-spoke 95 M3 wheels were too much of a chore to clean. I loved the BMW M Contour wheels, but not the price tag. So, I ordered a set of the 17x8 M Contour knockoffs from Bekkers, a frequent advertiser in the Roundel. Three of the wheels arrived in flawless cosmetic condition. The fourth was marred but Bekkers promptly replaced it. The wheels are junk. They bend far more easily than the stock wheels. Once when I had a wheel off the car, I accidentally dropped a lug bolt from a height of about 6". It left a small indentation in the wheel. For yucks, I grabbed the spare tire/wheel from the trunk, which was still the original 12-spoke BMW factory wheel. Repeated tests resulted in not a scratch on the BMW wheel. To date, I've spent a total of about $900 over the course of the past four years to keep this set of four knockoff wheels straight. I even keep my tire pressure 2-3psi higher than recommended. I only bent *one* BMW factory wheel previously, and it took a hit so hard that I thought for sure the suspension column punched through the body. In contrast, the stuff that bends the knockoffs was easily tolerated by the factory wheels - taking a set of bumpy train tracks, the occasional 2" pothole, bumps where roads are repaved (and I slow down *below* what they recommend for these!). I'm in the process of looking for a good deal on a set of two used BMW factory Contour wheels (already acquired a pair). Then, I'll relegate these junk wheels to beater winter wheels. What a waste of my money. Hopefully someone benefits from my mistake. I sure didn't. Note that this is NOT about the manufacturer above. I don't know who makes Bekkers' wheels. It's just a story about me trying to save money on wheels in the short run, and paying substantially in time and money over the long run. - Chris

Is it a a good choice or is there a better aftermarket alternative in terms of price/feature/ease of installation? And if I do go with the BMW unit, is it better to buy it from the dealer or is there a better place to get it? Thanks for any input on this subject. Miles- I posted the same question a few weeks ago here about an alarm system for my '97M3, and I got some conflicting info relative to factory Vs. aftermarket alarm systems. The issue was never settled, but I finally ordered a factory system and I'm waiting for it to arrive. The gist of the discussion was that the aftermarket systems have more features, but their effectiveness was questionable. Then there was some input that the factory system wasn't very effective either. Delving deeper seemed too hard, so I just went for the BMW system. At least that way I'll be sure to lock my car all the time and the alarm hopefully makes a lot of noise when an unskilled thief tries to get into the car. Jay Kenty '97 E36M3 '01 525i Stick
