Comments? My experience: heavier steering feel: yes. I noticed this when I first drove the car with the 245's up front. Now I don't really notice it anymore, I've gotten used to the steering as it is. Though I went from the stock ('97) staggered setup, 225 to a 245 front tire. tramlining: yes. I'm on my snow tires now (205's) and it tramlines noticeably less. The 245's do like to follow road irregularities. That's the price you pay for... understeer: definitely less. No regrets on my part for going to 245's all the way around, I plan on sticking with 245/40/17's all the way around. Andrej '97 M3

A "sensible" family sedan? Say, a Ford Taurus? And then against maybe an Expedition? Well, let's see.. Our mileage is slightly worse than the Taurus, but not by much. Expedition is terrible. We have a similar passenger and cargo capacity to the taurus. The expedition is far larger outside, but doesn't hold much more inside (if you want to haul a lot, buy a minivan or a wagon -- they hold more people or more gear better than most SUVs!) Our cars actually outhandle and outbrake the taurus, thus making them safer. We don't have poor aerodynamics or parasitic 4wd systems, crappy brakes, massive amounts of weight, poor acceleration, etc.. Our cars may have cost close to what an expedition cost new, but the markup was not nearly as high on our cars, which means you apparently get more for your money with the M3.. Others can see around my car are not blinded by my headlights etc I don't know, you can make some similar points about sports cars.. but the M3 is not a good comparison because it's too sensible. Try comparing a porsche to an SUV. Even then, at least you have a vehicle that is designed to do well on paved surfaces, where it will be used. Still more sensible than the SUV. Although maybe similar markups :) - reid > ... couldn't a very similar article be written about sports cars? Most of us > here drive M3's, and not just to get from point a to point b.

#5. re: Anyone in Houston with a Steelman ChassisEar? - from Barrett Nicholas

Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 23:48:43 -0600 From: Barrett Nicholas <barrettn@swbell.net> Subject: re: Anyone in Houston with a Steelman ChassisEar? I've ordered the ChassisEar, so for those of you in the Houston area, once I'm done with it, you're welcome to use it as long as you're willing to leave a refundable cash deposit equal to the cost of replacing it. Barrett P.S. Anyone know who owns the nice silver '95 M3 in NW Houston (I see it at the YMCA) with Hamman 18" rims and Brembo 4 pot brakes, big floating rotors? I'd like to find out who he bought the brakes from. I've had kmac camber plates in my car about 40k miles now, and just recently developed a thunk in the front I can't pin down. It's like the thunk-thunk of hitting an expansion joint, but without the second thunk. It'll happen when traveling straight and level with no change in direction or acceleration. I've looked under the front end trying to find something loose (Kmacs, Bilsteins, H&R 29910s, RD Sport sways, Brembo 4 pot calipers) but can't seem to find it. I even (gasp, the horror) paid someone else to look at it for me - I'm in Houston, so I went to Bavarian Machine Specialties, they do the work for most of the club racers here in town, but they couldn't find it either. I'm sure if I left it with them for a couple three hours (at $70 an hour) they could track it down, but I'd rather not spend that much in just diagnosing the problem if I can avoid it. Unless someone comes up with checking something I've missed (ball joints, sway bar ends, strut tops, strut-kingpin bolts, etc.), I'll need to get my hands on a ChassisEar and pin this down. Does anyone in the Houston area have one, or am I going to have to buy one and loan it to all of you when you have the mystery clunk you can't find? For those who don't know what a ChassisEar is, here's a link, http://www.ai-supply.com/search/ShowItem.asp?ItemCode=STE+06600 <http://www.ai-supply.com/search/ShowItem.asp?ItemCode=STE+06600> it's a set of microphones on the end of long leads with a headset and switch to select which pickup you're listening to. For those or you with kamc plates, how many street miles do you think a person should be able to get from them? Turner Motorsport seemed to think that 40k was way early for them to give it up. Tia for the help, Barrett

I'm going to have my car aligned and I want to suggest some settings to the mechanic. Does anyone know of sporty but tolerable front and rear settings for camber, caster, and toe for the street? Also, how much negative camber in the front is preferred on track days? Thanks. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
