#2. FS: Track Wheels for Driver Schools - from Tom Tice

Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 23:06:25 -0500 From: "Tom Tice" <tetice@triad.rr.com> Subject: FS: Track Wheels for Driver Schools Recently there was some discussion from some of you considering buying dedicated wheels for track tires (street or perhaps competition rubber). If you want to save your expensive street rubber and need some rims to put track tires on, I've got 5 wheels that would be perfect for that purpose and they won't cost you an arm and a leg. They are an 17 X 8 with a 40mm offset, older style MODA M2 (I believe) made by BBS. The M2 is a two piece bolted version of the more popular M1. All 5 rims are straight (but one has been straightened) and true but not extremely pretty - they are track wheels (or perhaps winter wheels). These rims are very strong but not competition light. I'm willing to let all 5 wheels go for $400 plus shipping. Keep in mind that having 5 wheels works out really well as you can keep one of your old tires mounted as a spare and inevitably you will cord one tire before a track weekend is complete - the spare will allow you to not miss out on that last day's fun at the track. The wheels are located in North Carolina. I have digital pictures available. If you request pictures please let me know if you have a high bandwidth connection or not. Like any other outboard computer, it won't be very effective when the car is running in closed-loop mode, 'cause the ECU will attempt to adapt. I use mine to lean things out a bit at idle, and richen them up at WOT and high RPM (> 4500). It seems to work pretty well. However, I'm hoping that it's only temporary, as AA will get me a better chip when I get them some dyno info. If I had to do it over again, I'd think about using the Apexi rather than the HKS. The Apexi lets you set a throttle position threshold for where it messes with the MAF signal. I think the complexity of the installation is the same for either unit, and the HKS wasn't bad. ----- Original Message ----- From: <HYPERM3@aol.com> To: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Monday, March 25, 2002 10:03 PM Subject: [E36M3] RE: Supercharger software > Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 00:02:23 EST > From: HYPERM3@aol.com > Subject: RE: Supercharger software > > > . It's not really easily replaceable. The removable shuttle feature is pointless, and adds cost for no good reason. > If so how do they compare with stock units as far as ride quality, noise > transmission, and/or effect on the shock towers? Acceptable on all counts. > What's the longevity of the replaceable insert? Lousy. A friend and I both wore ours out in under a year. Furthermore there's a design flaw in the internal metal sleeve that causes bushing preload to go away. I've heard that the later model may be more durable, but it's still not as good a design as Ground Control. > I have to replace mine and have seen recommendations to use RSM's from a > convertible and also a rec to use RSM's from an E46. What's the best? For street use the E46 M3 RSM is now the one to get. For track I'd suggest the Ground Control. Neil 96 M3

I've done a lot of business with them and they always were very prompt and let me know if they had a problem with being out of stock or other problems. They are good supporters of the club driving schools and always attend both as instructors and vendors. I'd call and ask for Joe if you don't get a satisfactory response from customer service. How long has it been and where are you? They are in Peabody, MA, so ground may take a while if you are on the west coast.
