So one option was to go with stock stuff and investigate into brake ducting, but for a street car, the ducts would rip out at full lock. And someone had front and rear kits for what essentially was $2500...so I jumped at the opportunity. Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! #2. '96 M3 trailing arm toe bushing part number - from Rex Tener

Date: Wed, 03 Apr 2002 12:53:29 -0800 From: Rex Tener <rex_tener@yahoo.com> Subject: '96 M3 trailing arm toe bushing part number My local dealer can't seem to find the part number for the '96 M3 trailing arm toe bushing. He says they only show that as part of the whole trailing arm. Does anyone have that part number handy? I got my Ground Control toe bushing arrestors (name?) last night, so I want to get these in soon. Also, Brett Anderson and an E36 M3 list person rent the toe bushing removal/installation tool. Will the E36 M3 list person who does this send me private e-mail. Thanks, -- Rex Tener rex_tener@yahoo.com

#4. rattling sound underneath - from Dorffer, Rich
Top
Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2002 16:07:29 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: rattling sound underneath Although not a similar problem on my M3 with just 28,000 miles currently, I had a similar rattle as you describe on my E30 325is which was the catalytic converter guts rattling around inside their chamber and not the heat shield. I replaced the old unit with one made by DEC from Steve (Ultimate Garage). It appears to be a pretty nice aftermarket unit and survived the winter well. Fit and finish was good. The only problems I had is the unit, after first bolting it up to the manifold, pressed up against the car's heat shield and the one support bracket did not bolt up to the damper on the transmission. After driving it a little while with the cat touching the heat shield, I knew I had to fix it. I was able to bend the entire unit down to get it to stop touching the heat shield and to the left to get it to reach the damper on the transmission. Now my exhaust is does not line up quite in the opening. I probably bent it a little too far and a couple of new exhaust brackets probably would not hurt either. I know can hear certain other little sounds at times which I attribute to the brake pads (I think) ;-) Later, Rich

Modified rotors used to be a no-no in Street Prepared, but that's changed. In the Solo2 minutes in Sports Car this month they announced that drilled/slotted/etc rotors are now acceptable. I don't know why there was ever an issue in the first place. It has very little bearing on auto-x results. > What about aftermarket rear shock mounts? I don't think there is a specific stipulation against these, as long as you leave the mounting points the same. -peterg (happily running in Street Mod from now on, where pretty much anything goes) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

#7. New Topic - V1 interference - from Wayne Miller
Top
Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2002 16:20:20 -0500 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: New Topic - V1 interference So last week, I was driving to Lime Rock for a driver's school and I got a little lost in the boonies of Connecticut. I was having a GREAT time driving on these wonderful twisty roads complete with elevation changes and there was nothing around me at all. The only thing was, my V1 kept reading 1 or 2 "bogies" coming from the rear on X-band at a low strength. There was NO WAY there could have been either a police car or anything else that would set off the detector because I was really in the middle of nowhere. I figured that my detector was broken and it is only a few months old (I traded in my old one for a new one). Last Friday, I was driving to a cool indoor go-kart place in CT, again in the boonies, and my V1 was going on when Chester's wasn't. On Monday, I called Valentine and explained my problem and the first thing the technician asked was if I have a cell phone. Guess what, I do! I did some experiments based on what he told me and he was right, my new cell phone, a Sanyo SCP-5150 (which is a REALLY cool Sprint PCS cell phone) sets of the V1, especially when it doesn't have a signal and is looking for one. When I tested it, I could get the signal strength meter to go all the way to half when I first turned on the cell phone and it was looking for service. Who'd have thunk it? Does anyone else have this problem? The technician's solution was to put the detector in big L mode and that works except when the phone is looking for service. I guess that when I am in the boonies with no cell phone service, I will just turn the phone off. -Wayne

Too bad I didn't mention our going out to the track last Friday to the list. The Connecticut Valley Chapter had a recent event at the track so we decided to check it out. Tons of fun. Laptimes were in the 12 sec range. ...very short/small track. At the end of each session, our hands would be killing us! I'd highly recommend visiting a kart track to get a feel for handling dynamics. It's also fun to race competitively and not worry about damaging your car...though it was amusing to see Wayne T-bone me to pass me...LOL!
