I will have the red M3 #21, red Ford F-350 Crew Cab Dually Diesel truck and 26' enclosed trailer! Also, regarding services at the track, there is a Mazda race shop that has a dynojet at Buttonwillow, so I don't think a welder is out of the question! <g> Cheers, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M3 #21 I-stock ************************************************************* List Commands UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. Im sorry but those weren't the clinchers on why I bought an M. Me either. However, I do have to transport the wife & son on occasion, and it IS my daily driver. I could not have survived my San Jose commute without taking coffee along with me - the dead bodies would have littered the highway <bg> (which, in retrospect, would have solved the commute problem. Oh well.) If you have the wherewithal to have a second car as a commute car, great. I don't, so my M3 has to be both comfortable and capable. That, IMNSHO, it what makes the M3 such a great car - you can drive to the track in air-conditioned comfort sipping on your morning coffee, then slap on the track tires and have a truly amazing time at the track. BTDT, many times <g>. >Sorry, I just had to say what others might be thinking. Well, I never quite understood that. Not every drive I make in the M3 is a qualifying run, sometimes just putt-putting along at 80mph on my way to work is all I feel like doing <bg>. Or driving the family to the in-laws for the holidays; you think I'm driving Kim's Corolla? Ha! And during those times, I enjoy the comforts that the M3 has to offer. I'm glad it has cupholders, A/C, power & heated seats; I and my family arrive at our destination cool (or warm) and refreshed. And I'm also glad it's got one of the best 6 cylinder engines ever produced and is one of the best handling cars, ever. The M3 has many sides to it's personality, each one shines in different situations. Frankly, I've enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) exploring them all. There's my 2 cents. When my radiator broke last month the sales manager Lance Hilderbrand called the parts manager at home, on the weekend, to come back to work and sell me a new one at a steeply discounted price. Lance even offered to get the shop opened up if BMW racers need anything during race/track weekends. This seems like a very good resource. -Juan Bruce BMW CCA GGC '85 M635CSi '95 M3 >-------------------- 2 -------------------- >Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 15:56:47 -0500 >From: KLchmn@aol.com >Subject: Buttonwillow attendees: brake rotor request > >If anyone going to the Buttonwillow event has some new or slightly used >front rotors, I'd be interested in buying them (possibly) this weekend as >spares for my race car. #6. RE: Brake Cooling - from Mike Frank
Top
Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 18:57:41 -0500 From: Mike Frank <mfrank28@comcast.net> Subject: RE: Brake Cooling I'll second points 1 and 2. Ducts work so well that "cold" brakes are a problem after long straights and/or in cold weather. And, you will find junk (mostly rubber) in your brakes without screens. We'll see how the hose holds up, but that's definitely a wear item. Leave it to MacGyver (sp?), I mean Bob to find some better hose. :) Mike Frank -------------------- 1 -------------------- Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 08:49:03 -0500 From: Bob Stommel <rstommel@iquest.net> Subject: RE: Brake Cooling Don't know anything about the HMS or Turner brake cooling kits, but I've used the Bimmerworld kits (before they were officially known as Bimmerworld) on several E36 M3s and an E30 M3 race car. They work very well and I've never had a fitment problem. They also install without removing the wheel bearings. No affiliation with those guys - I just like their backing plates. Here are some other tips on brake ducting: 1. On tracks with long segments between heavy braking zones (like Road America), make sure you don't have TOO much brake cooling. I found that in cool weather at Road America, the brakes get hot in the heavy braking zones and then cool down too much on the straights with the ducts fully open. For spring and fall driving events, you may want to tape over part of the intake duct. If you're doing an event at the beginning or tail end of winter, you may want to completely remove the brake duct tubing and let the air from the intake duct just blow into the wheel well. 2. Install some metal screening material between the front air dam and the intake duct to keep rocks and debris out of your brakes. 3. Most of the silicone brake hose sold by race parts vendors will eventually get cut or worn through by the tire edges. I found a good substitute: heavy rubber exhaust hose -- the kind you slide over the car's tail pipe to temporarily force engine exhaust to the outside of a garage. It comes in 3-inch diameter and you can get it from McMaster-Carr. McMaster-Carr also sells 3-inch stainless steel hose clamps cheaper than most race parts vendors. HTH, Bob Stommel
