Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 23:21:55 -0400 From: "Tim Williams" <willtj@bellsouth.net> Subject: RE: broken seats. Thanks to Chip (and others) I made this repair last weekend. 95M3, manual seats. There are instructions for the repair that suggest the back of the seat back comes off when you remove the bolts and remove the lever, but not on my seat. The entire seat back slides up off of the metal backbone, after you unhook the broken bowden cable from under the seat and remove the bolts Chip describes. The bottom two bolts are accessed from the front of the seat back. They are hidden by a leather flap attached to the seat back which covers the gap between the seat back and the seat bottom. It is secured by two metal rings under the seat bottom. With the seat back on the kitchen counter, I removed 4 staples securing the leather at the bottom of the seat, and 2 metal split rings. Once this was done I could see how the leather was retained in a slot molded in the seat back. Peeling this out of the slots from the bottom worked for me. I propped open a space between the cushion and the seat shell and replaced the cable mostly by feel. Peeling the leather off the seat from the top would have given better access, but I was worried about damaging it, and once I got started from the bottom... It wasn't necessary to remove the lever or its trim. Thanks to : Chip, Steve Cooperman, Tobin Finley, and James McKenna. and to Suzy! N.B. Again, this worked for manual seat, 95 M3. Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 15:15:09 -0400 From: "Chip Mitchell" <chipm@arches.uga.edu> Subject: RE: broken seats. Andrej, You're both right. There are two torx bolts at the top of the seatback, under the plastic cover, and two other torx bolts at the bottom of the seatback, below the rear edge of the seat cushion. Undo these four bolts and disconnect the bowden cable for the seat release and the seatback slides right off the frame. Then you have to peel the leather off from around the edges and reach in between.... The seats might be slightly different in that at least one person I talked to (with a '95 M3 I think) was describing his seat, the torx bolts that hold in the seatback were on the top of his seat whereas on mine they were at the bottom of the seatback. But despite removing those torx bolts, I don't see how to release and remove the seatback release levers. Once the levers are off apparently you can just slide / pull the seatback off and you'll see the cable in there. Andrej '97 M3 Jay Miller writes: > I got my cable. I have an instruction set for installing the BMW Power Lumbar Support which describes how to open up the seatback as well as installing the lumbar support. If you have an interest or need for this information, let me know and I will send it to you. Steve Cooperman '98 M3/2 Tucson, AZ

Looking for the optimal tire sizes for a set of street tires and a set of track tires. I know, stock fitment is 235/40-17. But what's the best to run, track and street? I'm completly open to rolling my fenders, but don't see how it would be an issue with this size wheel... ---------------------------------------------- There is a good reason why you picked up the 7.5" wheels for cheap....no one wants them except for winter tires. In an earlier email, I thought your car was going to be converted into a IP club racer. Wheels and tires are "free" in Prepared class which means you could use up to 9" wheels with 245/255 tires on your '95 M3. Why would you opt for a 7.5" wheel? Scott Riley '95 M3 I-Stock

The a/c is still relatively cold BUT the compressor is cycling off more than I like. The bubbles indicates that I do not have a full charge. I have seen the self re-charge kits @ pep-boys and such. I recently traded in my 96' 328 on a 99 M3, and forgot how bad the Jurid pads dust. I upgraded my last pads to Metal Masters. Just wanted to get some feedback as to a good high-performance pad that will cut down on the dust. I will be doing a driving school this summer as well as a few autox. Should I stay with the Metal Masters Thanks in advance Doug Wirth 99M3 *********************************************************************** Serena's U.S. Headquarters is relocating from Burlingame to San Mateo as of April 8th, 2002!
