#3. Radio Constantly Powering Off - from Dahlstrand, Kurt

Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 10:10:41 -0400 From: "Dahlstrand, Kurt" <kdahlstrand@empirix.com> Subject: Radio Constantly Powering Off Hi all, I've got the stock HK stereo in my '97 M3 and have been experiencing a very annoying phenomenon with it. I will turn my radio on and typically within 5-10 seconds it will shut off. When I attempt to turn it back on, it will either prompt me for my security code, or not even respond at all! Only once in a while will it stay on for an extended period of time. I noticed another phenomenon which started prior to this where the radio display would go from a very dim illumination to the normal illumination. I am not sure if these two are related or not, but I am thinking there might be some type of fuse problem here. Where is the central fuse box located? I know there a couple fuses that are related to the HK stereo that I could take a look at. Anyone have any other ideas? p.s. I did remove the radio and did not notice any loose or suspect connections. It was just a visual inspection, though. -Kurt '97/4 M3

FYI, the rear end of my car quieted down immensely when I replaced the rear shocks which where decidedly toast at 75k miles. Andrej '97 M3

Sometimes dim sometimes bright. However, I have the base sound system. I guess the radio isn't reading the PWM (pulse width modulation) from the dimmer correctly. Anyone else have any insight on this? Jeremy 97 M3

#6. Track Trailer Pictures - from Dorffer, Rich

Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 11:33:43 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Track Trailer Pictures Wayne, That is a nice little trailer for the money. I know it has been done before (there are companies that sell these little trailers specifically for this purpose) and I have seen it before but I thought it will bear repeating. This seems like a very good idea where one can make it easier to get to the track without having to load all your stuff into the car, especially if you are going to lug around tires. It is a lot less expensive than trailing your vehicle and buying a tow vehicle ;-) I will end up going this route some day (the little trailer that is), I can just tell. www.trailex.com for the Tire Toter. More money than Wayne spent though :-) I think Vern Anderson has the Tire Toter. Regards, Rich PS - Too bad about the damage to your car, I just hate that stuff and am still battling a claim on my 325is (where their is no dispute who is at fault (the trucking company) but who is going to pay). How do you like the Kuhmos? and when are you going to send me those LTW wheels on your car?

#9. AC recharged but no leak found - from Gary A. Preece

Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 16:28:47 -0400 From: "Gary A. Preece" <gapreece@entreky.net> Subject: AC recharged but no leak found Hey Guys and Gals, Took my 95 M3 to Don Black's Performance today to get an AC recharge. He could not find a leak with the dye, but did find that the aux. fan was not working (blown fuse). I did not even know it was not working since the temp has never gone above half way. He said that the fan not working could have caused the freon to expel from the system. It was very low, but not empty. Does this make sense? Should I continue to look for a leak? How? It was filled 2 years ago, as well. Thanks. Gary Preece Louisville, KY

The AC system has a hi/low pressure switches wired ahead of the compressor. If the pressure is too low, the switch kills 12V to the compressor to keep it from self destructing (R134a has oils that lubricate compressor internals. No R134a -> no lubrication). If the pressure is too high the switch opens the lines to keep the system from blowing up. You might be able to see some oily residue around the hi-pressure switch confirming that it had opened. > Should I continue to look for a leak? How? It was > filled 2 years ago, as well. Thanks. If you loose R134a, than yes, you have a leak. But it's entirely feasible that with a dead aux. fan the condenser (or is it evaporator that sits in front of the radiator?) got too hot and the hi-pressure switch opened. alex f
