After reading people's responses to my initial post, I seemed to get the feeling that my car was noisier with this combo than most. It's good that the short-shift/flywheel parts are not the culprit. However, it's unfortunate that my transmission is. :( Based on this and on my test drives in other similarly-upgraded cars (Wayne Miller's flywheeled car), I feel a lot better knowing that I'll be a happy camper when this goes back together. It's been two weeks since I have driven my car, and I'm going through withdrawl. This borrowed mid-80s 325 slushbox is a nice cruiser, but just not the same on sunny days. - Chris (left foot keeps stabbing the floor at red lights)

I was told yesterday that my synchro's were bad (reason for hard to shift into 2nd) and that I should buy a used one rather than try to rebuid it. Anyone know costs of the 2 options? What about those of you with the 6-speed...what are the advantages and costs with that slippery slope? Thanks. #5. HK AM? - from Mel Silva

Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 21:52:41 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: HK AM? List, I have the Luxo-barge package on my 97 4 door and part of that is the Harmon Kardon sound system. Lately I have had an interest in listening to AM talk shows instead of the Alternative Rock that has been rattling my eardrums. (Am I getting old?) The problem is that I get intermittent pseudo-clear reception with most of the time getting electrical interference noise. Anyone else have or hear of this problem? I checked Stygar and the UBMW archives but found no leads. Its not just ignition noise either; I get fan noise from the AC system or from the radiator pusher fan, ignition, sunroof, power windows and overhead AC lines (the last I expect). It is irritating enough that you can't hear the "talk" through the static. I have considered pulling the head unit out to see if some connection is loose in the back, but I doubt that could be it if my FM reception is great. What to do? Any ideas? Mel

The problem was worse this winter and seems to be much better now in warmer weather particularly after the car has been driven a few minutes and is up to operating temperature. Occasionally, the tachometer fails long enough for the TCM to lose its RPM signal and the transmission goes into failsafe mode (the TCM light does come on). The Bentley Service Manual reveals the problem has to be in the wiring between the DME and TCM. I find it hard to believe that the DME could be the problem since this is the only signal that seems to be a problem. I have also ruled out the crankshaft position sensor because the DME would give me the check engine light if it was faulty and the resistance across the coil is within specification. My questions: * Have you seen or heard of this problem before? * Could it be a ground connection and if so, which one? * Could the DME be faulty where only one signal loss occurs intermittently? * Although the wiring harness for the instrument cluster looks rather robust, could the problem be there and if so, what should I look for? * I have been told that a weakening battery could cause intermittent electrical problems; however, I've had no problems with the battery and no other electrical problems. Besides, it still has plenty of cranking power. Can you substantiate this claim? Your help is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to forward this e-mail where necessary. Please copy me on your distribution. Regards, Jeffrey Meekins '95 ///M3

They faxed me a 1pg flyer for it, which I might still have at work. Here's a picture I found with a random search for "trailex tire toter" . http://www.opentracking.com/_borders/carlsons3.jpg I called last year, and it was going to be about $1000-1100; so I passed. But I'm still considering some type of trailer so that I can take track tires to tracks other than Mid Ohio (45 minutes away). Taking the rollbar crossbrace in and out to store tires is not my idea if fun at the track. Jeremy 95 M3 ps. Everyone: Note how I trimmed away most of the attached post. It's a skill I know you can all develop, after all you were smart enough to buy an M3. ;) The people on digest (not me) will love you for it. Theyre the type > with the eccentric pattern in the top of the lock. Might have been me as I did have problems with my McGard wheel locks that I got from Fikse. The key used to remove the wheel lock stripped as I was trying to pull one of the wheel bolts off. The shop I use for tires had a special socket which they hammered onto the wheel bolt and pulled the rest of them off. They replaced them with normal wheel bolts, and they've been that way ever since. I can heartily NOT recommend the McGard locks. Andrej '97 M3

Which is the exact same thing a thief is going to do aswell. Those sockets are very easy to come by and will remove 99.9% wheel locks with a cordless impact gun with ease. After witnessing first hand how quick and easy bmw wheel locks could be removed, I decided to not even bother, if they want them, they can take them no matter what you do. Now if somebody made a lock that fit the bolt hole perfectly, probably would be much harder to remove, requiring drilling etc. But then they would only work on certain wheels etc. Mike
