I had this exact same problem on Thursday and Friday. 1996 M3 with only 36k. Overheating only occasionally. I ended up pulling apart the cooling system and found the dreaded broken water pump. It had several fractures and was starting to split apart. It was still hole, so no pieces in the system. Ended up replacing both the pump and the thermostat. I would of replaced the T-Stat housing if I could find one at 9:00PM on Friday. I only assume that it was moving coolant only some of the time. You can also check to see if you have heat. I think you would have heat only if the pump was working, even if the T-Stat was stuck closed. YMMV, Jeff '96 M3 - Now running cool.... Hey Guys, I've got a 1996 with 42,000 miles, been driving it for 3 years with not a single problem. So today in traffic I smell something funny, I look down and the temp gauge is in all the way at the top and the red light is on, I quickly pull in a parking lot and shut her down, it's about 65 degrees out. Came back about 6 hours later after it had time to cool down, look in the coolant reservoir and the water level is right where it's supposed to be. Start it up and check that the fan closest to the engine is running. IIt is, so I start to go the 4 miles back to my house, temp gauge raises very slowly from the lowest setting to the exact middle in about 5 min. then stays right in the middle for the remaining 5 min home. What gives? What should I check next? I don't want to take the car anywhere util I get this fixed. Thanks in advance for any help. When I moved here from Portland I was astounded at how may of the current and former listers live here and how many M3's you see on the road. You will have plenty of people to hang out with and there are a ton of events. There is also always a significant BMA presence at non-BMW sponsored events (NASA track days, SCCA autocross, etc.). Welcome to the area. -p0

The red led blinks BUT the system wasn't locking the doors nor setting the alarm/double lock. So I swap the chips and found that both chips have been programmed into the brain BUT it was the new used transmitter that was not transmitting the signal even thought the led was blinking. I opened her up again, cleaned it with elec. contact spray BUT still didn't work. Then I sat down, laid the 2 circuit boards side by side and looked for burnt chips, crack soldier..... I cleaned some "crude" off a few joints, re-assemb. and NOW it works!!! thanks for all who helped. Has anyone pinned down the culprit in this situation? I would hope it's the secondary tensioner, and not a need to replace the entire chain/sprocket/VANOS as mentioned in one of the tech posts. Thanks in advance for your help, Steve By the by, I replaced my micro-filter this weekend (talk about filth and muck!) and now I think I need a 5 point harness to keep me from getting blown out of the cabin with the fan on 4! #10. clarification of MacPherson strut camber curves. - from TFRM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 11:55:52 EDT From: TFRM3@aol.com Subject: clarification of MacPherson strut camber curves. Just to clarify: m3 will gain negative camber for a long time, all the way through any suspension travel on any m3. the reason for this is that the geometry does not start to take away neg camber until the LCA is perpindicular to the strut. As the control arm moves up into the body, at a certain point the arc does go past center WRT * the ground*, but not WRT the strut. So although the lower ball joint is bringing in the bottom part of the strut very gradually, the top part of the strut is sliding inward along the (very inclined) strut shaft at a faster rate, so the net gain is still towards negative. This will become a zero gain and become a camber loss suspension when the center of the wheel is about 7 1/2 inches from the fender lip. Everything will hit everything else long before this happens. A larger issue is that the rear camber gain is much more complicated, but there are ways around this, but the simplest is to actually run the car pretty low, but you must have a good handle on how to get rear travel to do this. Hope I don't sound preachy, but I suck at typing. Jay M Flying to Pasco WA, to look at a 69 Mach 1 on Wed, with World Products Heads. The guy must be a friend of Jim E.
