"From the Speed website: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bob Akin 1936 - 2002 By: John Zimmermann Atlanta, Ga., April 30 Veteran road racer Bob Akin has succumbed to the multiple injuries he suffered in an accident at Road Atlanta last Thursday. Akin was testing a1988 Nissan GTP-ZX Turbo in preparation for last weekend1s 25th Annual Walter Mitty Challenge historic races at the Georgia circuit when he made contact with another car and crashed heavily. Akin was a fixture on the IMSA circuit in the late '70s and '80s, the highlight of his career a pair of victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring. He won there first in 1979, teamed with Rob McFarlin and Roy Woods in a Porsche 935, and again in 1986, sharing his own Porsche 962 with Hans Stück and Jo Gartner. His familiar red and white Coca-Cola livery was applied to a variety of Porsches that were regular contenders in IMSA competition until he retired from active professional competition in 1991, having earned four top-10 finishes in the IMSA championship, topped by a best of third in 1983. Akin had remained active as a driver on the historic circuit, and also prepared cars for historic racing customers at his Bob Akin Motorsports operation in Ossining, N.Y. He is survived by his wife Ellen, son Robert IV and daughters Johanna and Susan. Funeral arrangements are pending. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ His website is at: http://www.bobakin.com/newAkinSite/newHtml/newindex.html Has contact info in case someone wants to send a note."

Also, when I find some free time (sigh) I'll take the picture into an upholstery shop and see if they have a similar tool. I'm going to be working on the seat cushions as well as trying to repair/replace the heating element. SOOOO I need to add about -1.0 to the right. Where can I get the shims and bolts, any part #s, and does each shim add 1/2 or 1 deg. of camber? thanks" Tim, did you have this done at a BMW dealer using its KDS (Kinematics Diagnostic System, in English) alignment machine? I have heard several stories, in the UK at least, of the KDS machine - usually a Beissbarth unit - showing a readout on front left of 1 degree more negative camber than there actually is. My recent alignment readings gave me -1 deg 47 min on the left and -58 min on the right. Eyeballing it, camber was the same, and less than the rears, at -2 deg 15 min each side. There is no reason - save a lot of accident damage - why there should be a 1 deg difference in camber between the front two wheels. Assuming, of course, that everything was installed correctly. In my case, I verified the alignment at an independent shop whose front left reading was app. 1 degree more positive than BMW's own KDS. I told the BMW dealer, and forgave them as my car was the first car on their new Beissbarth machine. Tim, I would verify your readings any way you can, and before you start adding shims, double-check that the installation is faultless (that goes for the parts, too). Andy T

Those hog ring pliers look different but would work the same as a set I have that are not from BMW. Mine came with a heated seat kit I bought for Gina's WRX and cost me about $15 or 20 with a ridiculously large supply of hog rings. Worked like a charm but just for grins I tried using regular pliers... trust me, buy or borrow a set of hog ring pliers. You are welcome to mine if you ship them back. In other news the seat heaters I got for $99 per seat for her car are VOLCANIC and heat from the bottom lip of the seat near your knee all the way to the very top of the seat near your shoulders. Insanely warm on high, even she can't take more than 10 minutes or so on high no matter how cold it is. :) Score!!! She never went for the M3 keys in the winter since I installed them. ;) Cheers, Dave Spragg dave@spragg.com Natick, MA 99 M3 Sharked Garage Queen 92 330is Sharked #330 I Prepared -----Original Message----- From: Scott Yu [mailto:scott@ditherdog.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2002 2:35 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] that hog-ring tool and seat heaters Date: Wed, 1 May 2002 01:28:57 -0500 From: "Scott Yu" <scott@ditherdog.com> Subject: that hog-ring tool and seat heaters Looks like the tool (BMW 52 0 050) would be more than handy to have if you're going to be replacing the heating element - anyone have a line on dealer tools?
