#3. RE: [E36M3] Help!!: Cleaning Hawk brake pad residue from wheels - from Riley, Scott

Date: Wed, 1 May 2002 10:36:09 -0500 From: "Riley, Scott" <sriley@cardinalcapital.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Help!!: Cleaning Hawk brake pad residue from wheels I want to thank everyone for their help on cleaning my Fikse FM/10 wheels that were encrusted with Hawk Blues brake dust. I know that they were some mildly heated discussions about Hawk pads and the damaging effects that they have when used in rainy conditions or in situations where they do not reach optimum temperatures (e.g. autocross). My '95 M3 is a dedicated track car; however, it was early in the season and the autocross was the only "fix" that I could find to feed my track habit. To make things worse, it rained and I didn't have time to clean the wheels until 24-48 hours later. I will know better next time to simply change the pads to something else (Pagids, Mintex, PF, etc.). It is well worth the 30 minutes to change pads, than the 18 hours that I spent cleaning my wheels. Even though the wheels aren't perfect (about 95% there), I had considerable success using SOS pads (with or without lemon smell...that's a call only you can make!) on the rims where there is not a clear coat. As much as it initially scared me, I used a screwdriver to apply pressure to the SOS pads and rubbed very hard. The wheel rim was not harmed at all by the SOS pad. In fact, once I find the time to apply some Wenol wheel polish, they will look brand new. Now comes the time consuming part... In order to remove the rust flakes from the rest of the wheel (i.e. the spokes), I used a plastic pik-type tool that I pilfered from my solder kit. It was very much like removing years of plaque from an elderly person's teeth. I used Simple Green and my pik tool with tremendous pressure, and before too long (12 hours) the wheels looked great. The rust was actually coarse enough that I had to keep rotating my pik to keep point sharp because the rust was wearing the plastic tip down. I was more than happy to destroy a $0.50 pik in the process of achieving clean wheels. Given that I am a rookie, I have a considerable amount to learn about many things including brake pads. I currently run the Hawk Blues due to a suggestion from a fellow club racer. Additionally, I have a set of Hawk HT-10 and PF-90s in my garage that I plan to use later in the season. I have been very happy with the Hawk Blues, but then again, I have nothing to compare them to since I have only had the car for a few months. All I know is that my lap times are very competitive and out braking people is very fun with the Blues. I have been told that the HT-10 are very similar to the Blues, but with better modulation. Unless I find a pad that I personally like better in dry race conditions, I will stick with the Blues. I would never not use the Blues because of what they did to my brand new Fikses, I would simply use another pad on the street/autocross or in wet conditions. Simple as that. Thanks again, Scott Riley #60 '95 M3 I-Stock

#7. [E36M3] Pad Bedding Alternatives - from twisty M3

Date: Wed, 01 May 2002 08:48:03 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Pad Bedding Alternatives I remember reading a post that someone had gotten info from Turner Motorsports regarding and alternative bedding in procedure for track pads. Not sure if it would be the same for all track pads, or if it's even a good alternative, but I'm curious nonetheless. I believe that, rather than the high mph stops generally required, you could actually get to a decent speed in 3rd gear and then ride on the brakes AND throttle until the pads faded... Then you're done. What's the consensus on this method? I'll be installing a new set of R4 pads tonight for Laguna Seca and would prefer a less "obvious" way of bedding them in safely/appropriately to avoid material deposits, etc. I'm certain I can find a safe/open road out by some of the fields around here and get to 120 for some heavy braking, but I really don't want to try explaining why I was doing that if I happen to get pulled over. ;) Thanks, Jonathan L. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

The rings and tool are available at many farm supply places since, believe it or not, they truly are used on animals, particularly hogs. Funny thing, we had one on our farm for years and I was surprised once when I saw Brett Anderson have one. I asked him what he needed it for and sure enough it was for repairing seats (attaching the upholstery to the seat frame, etc.). Regards, Rich - Contemplating some reupholstery myself.
