#3. What should I replace w/water pump? - from Reid Conti
Top
Date: Mon, 06 May 2002 10:49:06 -0700 From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> Subject: What should I replace w/water pump? Howdy.. I have a 95 M3 with 61k miles on it.. Recently bought a new water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, related gaskets (at least I hope I have all gaskets!) I'm going to replace the water pump myself, but am wondering if there's anything else I need. I know I should pick up some coolant from BMW (how many quarts?), and.. is there anything else I should replace while I'm in there? I suppose I should replace the serpentine and A/C belts.. any hoses I should replace as well? thanks! - reid ... new timing chain tensioner on the way, too!

#5. Re: Weekend R&R - from Robert Manger
Top
Date: Mon, 6 May 2002 13:56:18 -0400 From: "Robert Manger" <Robert_Manger@Mastercard.com> Subject: Re: Weekend R&R The procedure is fairly easy to do. jack up the car, remove wheels, unbolt the bracket for the brake line, mark the bracket position with a marker and then unbolt the rear shock, and then unbolt the trailing arm bushing mount. I would rate it up there with swapping out brake pads of the car in regards to difficulty. It is definitely easier having a couple of hands to hold the rear arm in place with putting it back together along with a jack to support the weight. I don't have pics of my worn bushings, but there was cracks in them. I used the factory bushings can't say that I notice a difference, but mine weren't that bad to begin with. The tool is specific to this procedure and I think the cost was around $400, but don't quote me on that. Chester has one and is more than willing to rent it out for use, at least that is my understanding anyway. npaci@va.rr.com To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> 05/06/02 01:25 PM cc: Robert_Manger@Mastercard.com Please respond to Subject: Re: Weekend R&R npaci So what's the procedure like for replacing bushings and which ones bushings did you buy? Urethane? OEM? I think that is my next project for my car(of course that's after the wiper blade insert installation)... What's the difficulty like, say compared to suspension installation? Any suggestions? Pics of the dead bushings? How noticeable are the new bushings? and what is the BMW tool that you allude to in the R&R of the bushings? I can't imagine any tool that BMW sells that you can purchase with pennies. #8. SRS reset tool - from Josh Criswold
Top
Date: Mon, 6 May 2002 11:09:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Josh Criswold <g_force_alt@yahoo.com> Subject: SRS reset tool My apologies to those who've already seen this on the Roadfly board, but. . . I started my car ('98 OBDII) the other morning, and everything completely hiccuped - I got a check engine light, check coolant level message from the OBC, and SRS light came on. I turned the car off, and re-started it. After re-starting everything was fine, BUT the SRS light stayed on. It's been a few days, and it hasn't hiccuped again (but the SRS light is still on), so I think it might have been a freak occurrence. Before I deal with the hassle of taking it into the dealer, anyone have a suggestion for a tool that'll reset the SRS light? I'd like to reset the light and see if it comes back on or whether it was just a side effect of the hickup. BTW, I've checked the Old Archives, and the Peake R5/FCX doesn't reset the SRS light. The concensus is to take it to the dealer, but a search on Google tells me there's at least one too that'll reset the SRS light (albiet $299). #10. Re: Bushman - from Steve Klein

Date: Mon, 06 May 2002 13:30:07 -0500 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Re: Bushman Chester et al.- On the subject of the Rear Trailing Arm bushings and replacements with the BMW tool, can you post some basic specs on the tool dimensions? I'm assuming it's like a wheel puller, two concentric cylinders on a central bolt, the inner cylinder or plate O.D. being sized to match the OEM bushing outer sleeve and the outer cylinder I.D. to receive this with a wall thickness to rest on the trailing arm surrounding the bushing hole. How deep? Am I correct in this assumption? Your info would be greatly appreciated. To that end, I purchased split urethane RT and offset front CA bushings from Bimmerworld last week and I'm gearing up to install them once the aluminum CAs from Turner Motorsports show up. Does anyone have any experience with these components they'd like to share? Any foreseen problems? I'll be doing the work at a friends metal shop, and I plan to use a hydraulic press to R/R the CA bushings in the lollipops, and to make the aforementioned tool for removing the RTBs. Someone mentioned spacers or plates for the RTBs from Ground Control: can you elaborate? The urethane RTB's I have are two halves, each flanged, with a specific length threaded core and two nuts on washers. No outer sleeve, and the instructions state that tightening the nuts flush with the core piece will squeeze the urethane firmly outwards into the trailing arm. Again, much thanks for any and all assistance Steve
